“Call it democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth within this country for all God’s children.” - MLK, Speech to the Negro American Labor Council, 1961. “We must recognize that we can’t solve our problem now until there is a radical redistribution of economic and political power… this means a revolution of values and other things. We must see now that the evils of racism, economic exploitation and militarism are all tied together… you can’t really get rid of one without getting rid of the others… the whole structure of American life must be changed. America is a hypocritical nation and [we] must put [our] own house in order.” - MLK, Report to SCLC Staff, May 1967. “The evils of capitalism are as real as the evils of militarism and evils of racism.” - MLK, Speech to SCLC Board, March 30, 1967.
Thank you for posting these crucially important quotes from MLK. Capitalism wants an oligarchy, wants to disenfranchise people and weaken democracy, wants to have workers be slave labor, as they're doing now. For instance, how do you tame inflation? Lower prices, lower profit margins, higher wages all work against inflation. But what does the Fed do? Raise interest rates which helps banks,, credit card companies, mortgage companies, etc.and hurts ordinary people.

An Aussie here who finds it difficult to understand. We have a referendum coming up to make a change to our constitution. Here are the voting options available to eligible voters: * In person at an early voting centre * If you’re overseas during the referendum period, you may be able to vote at an overseas voting centre or by post. * AEC mobile polling teams will visit voters who are not able to get to a polling place. Mobile polling teams will visit some residential care facilities and remote areas of Australia. Mobile polling will be carried out around Australia during the referendum period. * Voters who are blind or have low vision can cast a vote using our dedicated phone service from any location. * Voters living with a disability may also be eligible to cast their vote by post, or can vote with assistance at a polling place. * If on polling day you are outside the state or territory where you are enrolled, you will need to vote at an interstate voting centre. With an independent electoral commission and mandatory voting, gerrymandering or obstructing voting procedures is very difficult.

New York is heavily segregated politically outside of the city. Western NY is a few blue cities surrounded by cow towns, and the divide is extremely apparent.
My district is a cowtown and the congresswoman is a Trump boot licker. Every time she wins, it’s held up in court for months. Last time 2000 new voter registrations were NOT processed. Most were young first time voters so you know they were anti-trump. They fired the supervisor but it wasn’t a fair vote. I imagine this plays out in many districts. Clerk said she couldn’t get to them despite the fact they had ample time to process them. Also question the judge’s allegiance here - twice he has ruled in favor of Republicans despite the deliberate oppression of new voters. I wish someone could look into these cowtowns for corruption.
@@jacksmith-vs4ct no, because if you say "I'm from new york" people usually assume the city. The deeply conservative nature of the rural population here has throttled our government for decades via senate control.
Im from a suburb of Rochester NY and can confirm. Just cross county line road about 2 miles east of me and its all red and becomes just as backwoods as places down south the further from the citys you go.
I live in New York State, and it surprised me to learn just how much of the state is designated red. Of course, land doesn't vote, nor do cows and horses, and the four or five blue areas are where you'd expect; Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, possibly Syracuse, and, of course, the largest urban population on the East Coast of the North American continent. But just outside of NYC, on Long Island, in Westchester, and Rockland, where I live, it's red, because of the large amount of professionals living here and working in the city. Still, as I noted, land does not vote, and Fishs Eddy definitely has fewer registered voters overall than there are people in the average graduating class of a Brooklyn high school. So the state is almost guaranteed to be blue in national elections, but locally, the red is not to be discounted.
The same up here. Im in a suburb of Rochester and 2 miles east across the county line it just becomes redneck land. No different than the deep south in some areas.
@@RubbishFPS Yeah, between Rochester and Buffalo, you can practically hear the banjos. I went to school at SUNY Fredonia, and lived for five years in Rochester. Except for the urban areas, it's all extremely conservative.

I would love to see an episode like Marc mentioned around how to improve voting in NY. They aren't. There is nothing but hate and division in every aspect of life now. You can literally comment that a human baby or any baby animal is cute on social media and someone will come along with a hateful negative comment that puts yours down. It really gotten bad. We have no civility anymore.
I’m so glad we have mail in voting here in Oregon. It’s so easy. It’s fun, actually! Although usually I drop off my ballot at the library or wherever instead of mailing it in
Not sure about rural NY but in the city and suburbs at least I never had to wait more than a few minutes on a line to get my vote in. I loved the mail in voting we had when the pandemic was raging, I think it will be welcomed by the people. Those in other states who have to wait for hours are being abused by their legislators.
I’ve lived in the Hudson Valley most of my life. Mostly very rural. Wait times vary from polling places. Finally getting Early Voting in place really helped, though. I go that first weekend and in, vote, out the door.
I believe that all states should allow their electoral votes to be split like Maine & Nebraska do (based on how the congressional districts vote). As a Kansas voter, I feel disenfranchised because I live in one of only two blue-leaning counties out of 105. Yes, we have a Democrat in the house (Sharice Davids) & our governor (Laura Kelly) is a Democrat in her 2nd term, but as far as voting for president…my vote means nothing in the “winner takes all” method.🤷🏼♀️ 🌻🇺🇸

No much to be said of our country under the heading of "leading". This country's best days are behind us and will remain behind us so long as corporate America is permitted to line the pockets of politicians - on both sides of the aisle.

Duh, there's also Alabama and Tennessee. Tennessee lost a democratic representative from the house when they gerrymandered Nashville giving us to our Republican county neighbors
Salt lake county is a blue dot in a red ocean....the retugs split it four ways among the four districts...... local districts are also gerrymandered to ensure an overwhelming rethug legislature. In 2018 there was a proposition that passed hugely to have an independent commission to draw voting districts and the legislature ignored it and set up an "advisory commission" which they totally ignore.....
I’ve seen an abundance of complaints about highly gerrymandered districts in Texas too.
I think that if you are opposed to giving free food and drink to people waiting in line to vote, the solution is to make sure there aren’t lines, or they are small & quick enough that food and drink isn’t necessary. I’ve lived in three different states and only once waited for about 30 minutes to vote. Usually, I’m in and out in five minutes. This is the way it should be for all American voters, no matter the state.
I’m so grateful to Mr Elias and all the other lawyers and other legal workers for doing this important and highly non-lucrative line of work. Unsung heroes one and all.

No gerrymander at all. Require as centralised electoral districts as possible, unfortunately Voting Rights Act gets in the way of this
Gerrymandering is about drawing weird shapes along partisan grounds, while the VRA requires maps be drawn along ethnic line. Both should be done away with

We live in Kansas and ever since brownbeck and now his right hand person who thankfully couldn't beat our governor, but he did win the AG spot. We early vote in person, because we don't trust them not to mess with mail in votes. The surprising thing is how many people have been there early voting. Mark please don't give up on Kansas, please. I live in Lawrence and we don't have any representation, Tracy Mann has only been here a few times and still hasn't opened a office here yet. We don't belong in first district, we are not rural. We have to colleges, KU being the biggest college in the state. Our city is at least 80% blue 💙 probably higher. Please keep trying, please 🥺
Please do what you can to encourage people to vote. Our democracy depends on it
I believe that the house will be flipped. It's the Senate that I am concerned about
Dems have strong control over the senate, unlike the tRump Republican party who are wasting taxpayer money with bogus investigations that still to this day have brought no evidence of any crimes other than what tRump has done, are doing their jobs.
The Senate is actually doable since we have strong incumbents running who have good approval ratings, especially in Montana and Ohio.
@@pomerlain8924 Ohio is a maga State. I'm worried since Vance was elected over Ryan and LaRose is just as bad as Vance and endorsed by him
The Senate will gain Dems because the House is so effed up & reflects on all Repubs.
@@lylecarpenter3121 And Trump being on the ballot will drive turnout from Democrats and never-Trump Republicans, which will have down ballot effects. And it will actually depress the Republican vote, as a lot of normal Republicans who can't stand Trump won't vote period.

A Democratic state and yet we do not have mail in vote or ballot vote! You must do in person voting!! WHY???
NY has mail in voting. I vote by mail or go to early voting when it's quiet.
Good question, seems to me it's voter suppression.😳
An Aussie here who finds it difficult to understand. We have a referendum coming up to make a change to our constitution. Here are the voting options available to eligible voters:
* In person at an early voting centre
* If you’re overseas during the referendum period, you may be able to vote at an overseas voting centre or by post.
* AEC mobile polling teams will visit voters who are not able to get to a polling place. Mobile polling teams will visit some residential care facilities and
remote areas of Australia.
You’re just mad and but hurt cause Don is still not locked up and winning to be your next year’s president. Keep crying❄️😘😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You should be able to request a absentee (mail in) ballot from your county. I had one mailed to me for every election in my state & for presidential election while I was active duty military and afterward as a civilian because I worked 12 - 16 hour shifts & couldn’t leave work to go vote in person.

Voter turn out here is so crucial.
One of my favorite guests! Marc Elias always gives me more hope!
That's why the garbage Staphanik is in the House.
So like basically every other state in the country lol
@@jacksmith-vs4ct no, because if you say "I'm from new york" people usually assume the city. The deeply conservative nature of the rural population here has throttled our government for decades via senate control.
Im from a suburb of Rochester NY and can confirm. Just cross county line road about 2 miles east of me and its all red and becomes just as backwoods as places down south the further from the citys you go.
So grateful for your steady hard work for voting rights, Marc. And thank you, Brian, for your great coverage of this very important issue.
This just highlights we all need to be resilience and do our digilience at the local & state levels.
