Abstract - The monocopter is a type of micro aerial vehicle (MAV) largely inspired from the flight of botanical samaras (Acer palmatum). A large section of its fuselage forms the single wing where all its useful aerodynamic forces are generated, making it achieve a highly efficient mode of flight. However, compared to a multi-rotor of similar weight, monocopters can be large and cumbersome for transport, mainly due to their large and rigid wing structure. In this work, a monocopter with a foldable, semi-rigid wing is proposed and its resulting flight performance is studied. The wing is non-rigid when not in flight and relies on centrifugal forces to become straightened during flight. The wing construction uses a special technique for its lightweight and semi-rigid design, and together with a purpose-designed autopilot board, the entire craft can be folded into a compact pocketable form factor, decreasing its footprint by 69%. Furthermore, the proposed craft accomplishes a controllable flight in 5 degrees of freedom by using only one thrust unit. It achieves altitude control by regulating the force generated from the thrust unit throughout multiple rotations. Lateral control is achieved by pulsing the thrust unit at specific instances during each cycle of rotation. A closed-loop feedback control is achieved using a motion-captured camera system, where a hybrid Proportional Stabilizer Controller and Proportional-Integral Position Controller are applied. Waypoint tracking, trajectory tracking and flight time tests were performed and analyzed. Overall, the vehicle weighs 69 grams, achieves a maximum lateral speed of about 2.37 ms−1, an average power draw of 9.78W and a flight time of 16 min with its semi-rigid wing.

I saw the sped up version in a short and was absolutely mindblown by its agility, I thought it had the ability to fling itself then stop on a dime!! Impressive work nonetheless!
I thought the same exact thing 😭
I was like if they can make a bigger one then BOOM spaceship 🤣
Thats why im here too. Amazing nonetheless
Same, wanted to verify with a slightly more detailed source
Phenomenal! Intricate control of a single motor to go through all 3 dimensions. Absolutely love it!
Energy requirements for hovering must be lower than a normal quad on 2 fronts. Single motor AND the body is acting like a wing, generating more thrust, like a plane flying. If this can be adapted across the drone market, it'll be a huge leap in flight time! Now we gotta figure out software for the spinning video 🤣😂🤣😂
If you could try to emulate a rolling shutter, capture an image very quickly each rotation and stitch them together. The frame rate would go up if the aircraft increases it's spin rate
@@bgalvanizer THIS exactly. 3-10 frames p/sec should work for down-and-dirty aerial recon.
@@flamaest No need for dirty vision when they have 360 degree super fisheye cameras. It's a software issue.
Encase the camera in a ball bearing so the spinning wing wont affect where the camera is pointing
360 camera + accomodations for rotation, then add some kind of waypoint selection (telling the drone where to jump to next) and you could have the austrailians using remote control boomerangs
I love this thing so much, how one propeller can control all the 3 axis still amazes me!
The maple seed effect.
You are right.
Wat
Dammit, sir they glitched the physics engine again!
Tbh at first look like Boomerang RC with the flight pattern you got there, still impressive for engineers who made this efficient yet a new invention for drone tech 👍
Pretty cool project. It looks like a lot of work went into researching and designing this.
Do you have any plans to sell this, either as a kit or DIY plans? It would be fun to build something like this with my kids. They'd enjoy learning how it works.
Very outside the box! Amazing
It has been around since the early days of model flight.
Basically a toy compared to even a DJI Mini I in terms of any useful application.
There will never be a way to ever guard that prop. One touch of anything and it's a downer. Drones fare much better, even in bird attacks.
Fun to watch, though.
It's incredible, at least at first sight!
Pure science 😜👍
Well done!
Congratulations! 👏👏👏
This is brilliant. Great job! I want to build one!
This is a very, very cool idea! You are great!
Amazing work!
Super impressive!
Very impressive and interesting!
very creative! keep up the good work
this is amazing!
Proof of concept is amazing.
Well done!
Incredible💞
Really cool, great innovation
This is funny looking,
But very creative, good job
You sped up the most interesting part of the video: max lateral speed test
Mahogany seed effect definitely. Loved those seeds when I first saw them during my boy scout days.
This is Ingenius!
it was built by ingineers
Looks very safe haha good job
No way! Designers must have 4-dimension imagination to make it work.
It is something that cannot be described. Mobility to change direction during the flight. Wow! Human intelligence approaches alien intelligence.
100% will be used for military purpose in the future
Watch out for the manhacks Gordon!
I am wondering what camera shots from this drone look like.
How high can it fly? How does it do in a windy area, rain or other weather conditions? 🤔
I can imagine a camera on it would make you dizzy.
Maybe if you spin the opposite direction in a desk chair it would offset the effects
It's called software stabilization. Likely 5 frames per second at its nominal speed.
The maneuvering is great using a single motor.
Interesting work, but would this ever have any useful application? It doesn’t seem to be able to carry a load and it doesn’t seem like you could get a useful video feed from it with the spinning. Seems like it would be rather unstable in moderate wind conditions and even indoors it was wobbling around quite a bit. For some reason it reminds me of a bat.
Could be useful for taking air samples in calm conditions. Cheap, low cost and more easy to produce in large numbers.
I could easily derive video from it. Ask me how
I bet you could hang something on a pivot mount at its axis of rotation
@@thomastaylor8657how
People involved in making this please reach out to me if you want to change future!
its like boomerang.
If you add a camera to it and some software to process the feed, you might be able to make a 360 camera out of it.
When will there be a carbon fiber version?
Wow
How more energy efficient is it compared to a conventional quadcopter?
Please hire me or I will post some mind blowing uses for tech like this.
It's almost VTOL right?
This is (as many people have already said) a very cool idea, but what kind of applications would it be good for?
Batarang anyone???
Pretty much just sensor data collection, communications relay, etc.
Weapons, recon, demolition of mines, make them sticky so they bind up other drones, my list goes on. I see nearly 100 uses.
@@thomastaylor8657 ok I guess I see a few that could work
Nice batarang!
This is how a UFO sighting looks like.
Will it come with a camera?
Not a problem - just use rotary synchronized camera ☝😁✌️
Fpv on that thing would be nuts! Lol
Let's get some onboard camera footage🤢
And what is good in this !
Listen to it, how quiet it is. It barely consumes energy
A simple concave lense aka 3d camera and software with motion tracking software would fix your camera problem
I see
🤔 ci si potrebbe fare un tagliaerba , bello ma è molto strano quel drone 😃
Imagine controlling this thing via FPV.
It's a boomerang if you think about it
Good for confusing the radars
Not bad. Especially if there are cutting blades on both sides.
Adjustable machete.
Неплохо. Особенно, если с двух сторон будут режущие лезвия. Управляемое мачете.
Or a wrecking ball mass basses projectile or rocket
Skynet!
Attach an axe to this and it is gonna be a good anti-zombie weapon. But don't play with a grandfather.
No body should be forced to listen to the lies of advertizing before they actually view the desired video
Now your drone has a problem that has not been proven
How do you use it for a video camera?
with such a high rotation of said vehicle
when you build your own drone, you too will be able to put any advertisement before it
@@miron__ Seems someone has used my logo and posted a comment
I do not recall ever seeing or maaking.
Охереть
Why TF was this invented.
Because it's a cheap and powerful drone. It's actually much bigger in the future.
burrito
Now try and take some video let alone pictures from this flying nonsense 🤣
