    Nice views!!! I would like to do some running in Tenerife someday. Tenerife has the highest mountain in Spain (Teide). It would be great place to spend summertime hiking around. Definitely Saucony Peregrine 12 or Xodus Ultra would have worked better on your run but hey Tempus proved pretty capable shoe anyway. Which cruise trip did you take? Did you board it in Barcelona?
    I was in various cities around Portugal for 2 weeks late September and really enjoyed the country. I wanted to visit Madeira as well, but it is way too far out to include in a general Portugal trip. A cruise stop there or a trip dedicated to Madeira would be best.
    Early this summer I did Lake Blanche trail in UT in Peregrine 12 and I was thankful for the rock plate and lugs. Pretty hard trail, slightly over 10K in length (out and back) with 2800ft (850m) elevation gain. It took me slightly over 3h to complete (moving time only) but the views were worth it. At the top there was still some snow, and the lake was party frozen.

      I’d love to get over to Mt. Teide next time I’m on Tenerife, but it just seemed too far from Santa Cruz for the time I had available. I think renting a car would be the best option if I’m there on a cruise stop!
      Yes, the cruise boarded in Barcelona and we cruised to Port Canaveral.
      I’m looking at the Lake Blanche Trail on AllTrails as I type this. It looks epic! You did well to do it in 3 hours! Did you see any wildlife?

    I would take high hiking shoes.. Like army boots.. Normal running shoes are a recipe for disaster. You really feel safe in shoes that lock above the heel. You just run sideway on steep parts.. I am surprised you felt the rocks with the Tempus...

    Great adventure and great video, Matt! I've really only heard about Tenerife as a place where pro athletes go for winter training camps, so it's fitting that you would run there. It was great to see a bit of it and I'm glad that you got in a good trail run even if you didn't go quite where you had planned, or on the island you had planned actually!⛰

  • @joseph.cumming
    @joseph.cumming Рік тому +1

    ⛰ Be careful out there! If I hadn't already seen on Strava that you made it back safely (or of course figured out that you couldn't have uploaded the video if you hadn't), I would have been seriously worried to see you running on some very dodgy, narrow trails overlooking cliffs, with no mobile phone signal, insufficient water, and almost no one else out there to find you.
    Meanwhile, though, I have a question. You mentioned at the beginning that you used your "trail app" to find some good trails. I use various apps myself to find trails when I'm traveling in unfamiliar locations, but I'm not really satisfied with any of them. Do you have a recommendation of a specific app? You might even consider doing a video about this, if you do have a recommendation, since I think many of us runners have that question.
    One problem I have is that I prefer unpaved trails (because of my hip and knee issues). Strava's maps function theoretically lets me choose to prefer unpaved surfaces, but then it proposes paved routes, ignoring great unpaved trails. The All Trails app lets me choose to prefer paved trails, but strangely does not allow me to prefer unpaved trails. Sometimes I find that Google Maps is actually the best way to find a good unpaved trail, but that has its own problems. I could mention other apps I've tried, but you get the idea.

    • @its_Matt_B_
      @its_Matt_B_  Рік тому +1

      It was a fun adventure! I suppose it was a little sketchy, but it was the right amount of sketchy where I wasn’t really concerned for my safety (unless I had an accident).
      I used FatMap to find this trail and I usually use AllTrails. I don’t have too much experience with them as I only use them once in a while when I’m looking for trails in a new area. There are no trails in my area I don’t already know about, so there’s no need to use them on the reg. I haven’t explored the apps enough to know about filtering for paves/unpaved trails. I usually look for the highest difficulty rating as close as possibly to my location. A difficult trail is aways an unpaved trail. 😁

    • @joseph.cumming
      @joseph.cumming Рік тому +1

      @@its_Matt_B_ Thank you! That's very helpful. I'll check out FatMap. And I hadn’t thought before about the fact that difficult = unpaved. Good point! I'm glad you made it back to Harmony and the ship OK. The volcanic cone at the top of Teide is awe-inspiring. I hope you get to visit it someday. Because the Canary Islands are close to the coast of Mauritania, we used to change planes in Las Palmas, and several times we extended the stopover for a cheap vacation in the Canaries.

    • @its_Matt_B_
      @its_Matt_B_  Рік тому +1

      @@joseph.cumming I definitely plan to visit Teide the next time we’re there. I just didn’t have enough time to plan, but now I know I’d have to rent a car from the port.

    • @joseph.cumming
      @joseph.cumming Рік тому +1

      @@its_Matt_B_ Yes, you would need to rent a car. It's been many years since we were there, but back then we found it astonishingly cheap to rent a car in the Canaries. Perhaps because it's impossible to put very many kilometers on the car on an island, and because maintaining cars in a warm, dry climate is relatively cheap.

      @@joseph.cumming A taxi was estimated at €100 each way and I read a few things that indicated it is a challenge to get a taxi back from Teide. The trail I wanted to hike/run suggested 6 hours to complete, so it all just seemed a little tight.

      For that kind of trails, I highly recommend you invest in a trail shoe with rock plate. Saucony Peregrine 12 is a good one with a flexible but effective rock plate. If you prefer more road to trail shoe, Saucony Xodus Ultra would be a better choice. Slightly shallower lugs (3.5mm vs 5mm in Peregrine) but still incorporates the same rock plate.
