Thanks for doing this video, I just bought my first Genesis models and was curious of how a sound model looked inside, and for whenever I get more dc models, I can us my two for a reference on wiring. But I wasn’t sure how to take the shell off, now I do, so thank you.
You are welcome, and good luck with your projects!
Great job! You should do another one of these showing how to install a decoder with a current keeper. Thanks for sharing this! Tim
Thanks Tim!
Love your "how to" videos! I have two of the Bachmann F40PH's that need decoders and I remember that you have a how to on that loco as well! Thanks for sharing this Deryk! - Brian
Thanks Brian!
Thanks for the video. I will be installing V5 decoders in my SD60’s as well and have a LOKProgrammer. Looking forward to seeing how you program it. I always enjoy your videos...
John
Thanks! Hopefully I help in some way.
Thanks Derek! Very informative and helpful video. I hope you go ahead and make the programming video. Good job!
Thanks! Programming video is now up.
Nice work! I don't have any sound units but this video just might make me rethink about adding a couple for lead units!
Thanks! Sound units are definitely cool!
Great job Derek !! Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work..Lance
Thanks bud!
holy crap, it looks like you own a model train store by the looks of that wall! I would have never figured out that sticky speaker thingy, thanks for the video! Very helpful
Hahaha, I set my work area up to resemble a store, where I could just reach up and get what I need. Thanks buddy!
Nice job showing us the install procedures. I installed a decoder on my 911 unit and yes I screwed up and bent + broke off a pin,so lesson learned for me.
Sometimes lessons are hard learned. Sorry to hear that.
Impressive work bench
Thank you!
Great video, DG! Thank you.
Thank you!!
Nice and clean.
Thanks you!!!
The MTC21 plug has the loudspeaker pins on the board, better to grap the signal from there then directly from the decoder. Great video though...
easy as that! thanks for the video tutorial!
You're welcome!
If you see the wires thru the vent take it apart put black paper in and boom
Good tip!
Great video!
Thank you!
Cool.....you are a Master. Bob
Nah, definitely not a Master. haha
Awesome video, this sure does help me out. I just installed a decoder in my sd50. Who's the two assholes that gave you thumbs down.
Thanks man! Oh I have a few "fans" of the channel. HAHAHA.
Nice job
Thanks!
Love seeing you back in my sub box! I have 3 of these, veterans, 911 and a standard black one. Are all the lighting functions isolated or are they all wired to the main head light like older pre 21 pin decoder boards? I think I see isolated in the video but am not sure. It will probably be explained in the next video. Can’t wait!
Thanks buddy! The number boards are wired to the same output, but everything else is on their own output. Each ditch light is on their own output, so if you use a 6 function decoder, you can get both front and rear to alternate flash, without having to touch the wiring. I have a programming video coming out soon discussing that. Hope that helps.
DG Modelworks Awesome!! I’ll have to add sound to the others. I only got the veterans unit with sound. I know your video will help me a lot! I know this one did!
Great vido.
Thank you very much!
Hi Derrick, great video , I like how you show things so simple and easy, I have a Athearn Genesis Sd60m Non sound model and want to add an ESU loksound V5 decoder like the one you used in your video, I noticed the product# was 58429 , that decoder is pretty hard to find now with the chip shortage and all ,also living in Canada now my question is could I use ESU loksound V5 58419 , this one is available at the moment but just wondering if this is similar to the 58429 decoder ? Or is this one for steam or the European market ?
Thanks .
I think the only difference between the two is one comes with a speaker, and one doesn't. Also some things to know.... make sure your loco accepts a 21 pin decoder. And these decoders do not come with any sound file loaded on them, unless you purchase from a place that will program a sound file on there for you. Or unless you have the Lokprogrammer to do it yourself. These decoders come "blank" and need the correct sound file loaded.
I use silicone caulking to seal my speakers.
Everyone has a preferred glue. I say...use whatever works for you.
hello my name is William thank you forsharing this viedo I am thinking on getting some unsound dcc enigines in n scalethen ill add sound to them from william
I just did the same speaker/decoder install in my SD60E and soldered the speaker to the speaker terminal on the lightboard - any benefit to wiring them straight to the decoder like you did?
There is no difference. Both methods have the same result. Enjoy!
Nice work
Thanks Eric! I know you prefer operations vids, maybe someday I will get there. :)
@@DGModelworks and N scale engines that are quiet too :)

how to program the decoder
Great "How to" video! Does removing the weight affect pulling performance?
Thanks! Removing weight from any loco will definitely affect pulling power. These aren't the heaviest locos out there to begin with. As a comparison, this locomotive weighs 20.45 ounces. To put that into perspective, an Intermountain ES40DC weights 18.00 ounces(which has terrible pulling power), and the MTH SD70ACE weighs 23.15 ounces (one of the best pulling locos).
@@DGModelworks, thanks for your quick reply! can I add weights in that cab? The ones they sell in auto parts store?
@@FatboyinPa Yes you can add weights if you can find a spot for them. I don't expect you will find any available space in this locomotive though.
Great tutorial !. I like the idea of installing an ESU Loksound decoder in an Athearn Genesis. Not a big fan of Tsunami 2. Question is when you purchase a new Loksound V5 decoder are the wires for the speakers attached to the decoder ? or did you have to solder them on to the decoder . Sorry and one more question, if you were to install an ESU decoder V5 21 pin into a new Athearn Genesis DCC that has a tsunami 2 decoder from factory would you have to wire in the speaker ?
Thank you for any input, just not to impressed with tsunami 2 right out of the box.
Thanks! The 21 Pin V5 decoder comes with the speaker wires already attached. If you buy the newer NON-Sound Genesis locos, they will accept a 21 pin decoder. If you buy one that already has Tsunami 2 from the factory, then you will have to replace the entire board. The factory equipped Tsunami 2 locos come with a full size decoder board, not a 21 pin.
Hey thanks for responding. Wow, I didn't realize the factory equipped tsunami 2 locomotives are like that. I've got about 4 tsunami 2 locomotives and I was thinking of converting them. I will most likely buy the dcc ready models in the future. Thank you very much for that info.
Okay I just purchased the same decoder that you did (58429) and there are no speaker wires. I cannot tell from the provided documentation where I should solder the speaker wires.
DG, where can I find a foam cradle that you use to place the locomotive on??
Most hobby shops have them, I purchased this particular one at Micro Mark. Here is the link www.micromark.com/Foam-Cradle?scale=6

Ugh, JokSound, LOL
Now now, be nice. LOL
@@DGModelworks I know, just a play on words. I prefer Soundtraxx and I'm sure there are people that can't stand Soundtraxx but I don't want to start Decoder Wars. ;-) To each his own as they say!
@@nateshon3eastbroadtoprailr448 I know bud, no worries. I knew you were just joking around. I agree, everyone has their preference and I don't fault anyone for that. Do whatever brings you joy with the hobby. That's the most important thing.
@@DGModelworks Agreed!
