Today we are reviewing mt FIRST EVER GRAIL!! It was the first watch I wanted more than my next breath when I was 12 years old!
I couldn't even afford a basic G-Shock back then, let alone a top of the line protrek that was double the money, so it was unattainable for me.
Now, JUST 25 years later, I finally got myself one! A PRT-40, THE FIRST triple sensor model to come to my country and first Casio to wear the ProTrek label.
It was also the first Casio to offer auto Backlight, and with the dual colored screens and exposed sensors it is STILL one of the coolest looking watches I have ever seen.
Join me in my journey down memory lane as I finally get one in my hands!!
As usual, stay tuned for the full review!!

I got mine in 2001 before going to the military academy. I used it in all my training exercises and even after. The best part… I still have it and it’s still running… An absolute classic watch which indeed was way ahead of its time especially in terms looks.
Got this watch around '98. Point man in Ranger School with an issued compass that was seized. At the time, gps was limited to about +/- 200m. With the altimeter I was more accurate with my land navigation than the RI's in mountain phase. I could even tell the guys when a storm was going to happen, thanks to the barometer. Hopefully, I still have the watch saved with my gear bags... if little hands haven't intervened.
The exposed sensors look very impressive!!
I got the very first version 1994 ATC-1100 when I was in my early 20’s. Almost threw it away a few years ago when I was first getting into watches as I thought it was just an old quartz watch not worth replacing batteries. So glad I kept it and now I would never get rid of it.
FYI - the long strap is because it is meant to go over a snow jacket when you’re trekking or skiing. When I first got it I cut the strap done because I didn’t know why so long.
😄
I got a PRT-70 in the 90s and still use and love the 70. Back then, it was a big purchase and I got it for the altimeter for when cycling in mountains. It was and is awesome. Love this one here too.
It is never too late for true love. Bravo! Its fantastic
I just recently got an ATC-1200, the precursor to the PRT-40 and love it, something about that functionality built into something from the 90s is so cool to have.
I also looked at this and later Pro Treks, but couldn't justify the cost at the time. A few years later, I did get a Pulsar SAM watch though, and still have it. Late 90s was a great time for watch designs...
Ayyyeeee! Congrats! I just now got one online for $70. I can't wait to see it.
I was talking to my dad about this piece while watching your review. He said “wait here”, and suddenly showed up with the same watch 😮 (black instead of silver), in perfect condition. What a pity I cannot upload a picture here
sorry if i'm ask. Would you please tell how he got that watch? and hide it from you all this time? 🤣.
Whaaaaaat??? You lucky bastard 😅😅
Now I’m wondering what else is he hiding 😂
Let me know if there are other gems hidden 😁
Sure, will do! Keep up the good work!
I share your exact same memory... Only it was in 1999 and I was 11 years old. Seeing this in the window of a store was like seeing something from another world. Insanely cool. However, my parents bought me the PRT-20. I still own that one, it's beat, but still runs perfectly.
Vintage watch old is gold
I think I still have a Casio brochure from that era. The Casio watches were so cool !!!
Mine is the ATC-1000. Even older and still going as new
I got 1 last night..prt400 edition silver gold like new.. im so happy 🥰
Congratulations on you, fulfilling your dream!
Keep up the good work and enjoy your watch!!
yo lo compre en los 90 y a dia de hoy me lo suelo poner en muchas ocasiones, es uno de mis preferidos de todos los que tengo.....
Congratulations! Very nice piece!
Thank you Watch Geek. I will try.
Just bought this same watch and a Baby G for 50,00 Euros on the flea market today awesome 😊😊😊
I've got the PRT-50 and the PRT-50-B1
I know the nostalgic feelings.... when I was at middle school I have Casio calculator with invaders game built in it CA-51.... Now it costs toooooo much... ;-)
I bought it at 1996 when i was 20 years old, and after some years i lost it cause i changed house
Last week accidentally i found it, i changed batteries and it works just like new
Now,i am searching a strap and i will give it to my 12yo son who is waiting impatiently
cool! I like the zoom 3:40
Great video!
Any chance of a video showing battery replacement/service or disassembly of this?
Cheers
Man even looking at it now makes me know how you could stair at it in the window of a shop...😅 .... I mean I sure can imagine myself doing that 😊
My grail at that time was timex datalink irionman triathlon - the one with green fluorescent LCD. Until this day I do now own watch with better and clearer LCD. Optical data sync via CRT monitor was an insane feature back then, unfortunately windows 98 and Me ware last operating systems that supported this. Afterwards you could use external adapter with a diode and fan made driver for linux. These days all I need is one digital GW-M5610 and one ultra light/flat 9mm analog titanium radio controlled citizen. Pretty much all my other watches are collecting dust and value 😈
Merhaba güncel bir Casio protrek saatiyle bunun ölçümlerini kıyaslama videosu çekebilir misiniz? Hangisi daha doğru sonuçlar verecek merak ediyorum
Watch from the movie Who Am I with Jackie Chan, the rooftop fight.
Checkout the ATC-1200
I have a twin-cept prt-50
Have fun with your love of your youth 👍👍💪💪🙏🙏‼️‼️
У меня очень схожая история, только мой грааль это alt-6000, которые были у моего одноклассника. Мне понадобилось 25 лет чтобы наконец заполучить их. И понеслось...
What do you think about new model prg-340 ?
I really enjoyed the review. I get weird Blade Runner vibes from this Protrek.
I would soon have this type of watch over a rolex I feel that you a getting better value for your money with the functions it can do don't get me wrong I have a few machinecal watches in my collection one is my dad's from the 1930s
My PRT40 doesn't work after battery replacement. The batteries are good and I followed the steps to change the batteries. Is it dead? 😖😖😖
Try resetting it with the AC connection OR keep taking them out and in until everything starts working properly.
I recently had to change them on mine and it took me 10 tries to start working properly
Sweet! 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Is it though solar ?
Nope
in 96 you most likely had 512MB or 1GB HD
In 2.000 i bought a 10gb, thus the comment it felt like INFINITE amount after those 1GB ones 😅
I can buy this watch for 10$
if you press and hold the bearing button '' beairng '' will flash and will take continuous measurement!!
if you could help me with my prt 41 (2198 module) ...
its case is in bad condition...
i need to find a replacement case !
my casio dealer in greece says ''no stock and discontinued '' which obviously is true !
is there any chance you help me restore my prt-41 ?
thanks in advance!
