Our friends at GoScope (A small company who makes GoPro and camera accessories) were recently told by GoPro to change their name and all their product molds, due to the embedded name brand, or they would be taken to court. GoScope cannot afford the legal fees to even begin the legal process nor cannot afford to change their branding along with their molds. All of this would put them out of business. It is not right for large corporations to go after small businesses.
Help us in the fight for the Under Dogs!

This is sad. GoPro is steadily losing market share because they refuse to lower their prices in the face of ever increasing competition and market saturation. And stepping on the little guys isn't the way to make themselves look better.
Btw, I submitted this to TechDirt. They love exposing trademark bulliers. GoScope might want to check out Popehat too, who put out requests for help when small companies are wrongly threatened by large ones.
I sent it to Gizmodo and Tech Crunch. We will see what they will do.

For targeting hipsters, you have to overprice it to make it cool. They know it well. There are already great action cams with good quality and better features at lower price. Why people are not buying those then? It's because of that gopro hipster cult.

This is ridiculous, it would be like Apple suing OtterBox or other case companies because they make cases for their phones...GoPro can't kill off companies that make accessories for their products, solely so they can monopolize on the accessories market, that's what it looks like they are trying to do.
It would be like suing Otterbox if their gear was called the AppleBox.

The name Otterbox is nothing like Apple. You're missing the point. It's the name that is the basis of the complaint... Google 'Tsubo tsubi', a US show company sued and Australian jeans company for having a similar name... Hell, even pornstar 'Katsumi' was forced to change her name to 'Katsuni', so there is plenty of precedent for this sort of thing and GoPro will likely win in court.

This is the reason why many of my friends bought a GoPro and I was considering it as well. Maybe they really don't know what they are doing to themselves with this?
I hear so many people saying that go pro have more accessories than their competitor, (SONY), I have 5 Sony Action cams an if anyone has ever brought a Sony Action Cam they would know that Sony includes a small Sony to GoPro adaptor, So I know that Sony Action Cams will fit onto all GoPro accessories and all Sony accessories, can GoPro fit onto Sony accessories?....I think not..Just a thought, and if you haven't already seen the Sony FDR-X3000, it is very much worth a look, It has optical stabilisation, Superb...I am not a Sony fanboy I will always use what works for me...here is one more thought..the sensors in GoPros are Sony sensors....Just sayin.
Exactly what happen to us.
The different is, we are just community user. Not a company.
Back in 2014, we created this community for gopro user here in Indonesia named GOPROID.
passing the 1st year, we become the largest Gopro user community in Indonesia.
And suddenly, our instagram account deleted by instagram without any warning.
Same thing happen to other Instagram accounts that using Gopro word or part of it as their username.
We've tried to contact the gopro and instagram. No luck.
After searching the Internet and contacting others who might concern, we found out the reason our account being shut down was because Gopro have patented the word "Gopro" and "Hero" trademark.
By that, they ask Instagram to deleted our account.
Thats just it, our community, our hard work, our trust as user to the brand we use, were deleted.
We feel betrayed by the one who suppose to be supporting us.
Don't they realize that we voluntarily endorse their brand?.
But we can't abandon our community, because people inside it are our friends, our family.
So we rename our community into GPROID until now.
But the scars remain.
Our community keeps running, without any contact or any support from the Gopro.
I think it's time to let people in Gopro know, what they did was wrong.
You can't stand alone.
You need support.
You need others.
We are not a competitor.
We should support each other, not killing each other.

If its not fair for large companys to go after small companys, then why is it ok for small companys to infringe on large companys patents/copyrights
I agree 100 percent, if not more :) GoScope had their copyright claimed in 2011, and GoPro had the chance to appeal it, and did nothing with it. GoScope did exactly what so many other companies do, make accessories for other companies, that within itself is not a crime, however GoPro is attacking GoScope, and so many others who make accessories for GoPro. This is why I'm not okay with the situation. If GoScope was making a camera similar to GoPro, then yes, it would be an infringe on the company.
Apple is kinda ignoring everyone to make iPhone cases, they only care about the third-party products sold in the Apple Store...... but I have to say, GoPro might be thinking about going after evey company who make GoPro accessories, GoScope might be just the first one on GoPro's' attacking list.
I completely understand your view then, The methods GoPro is taking are obviously extreme and unfair based on the company position but a huge portion of there income comes from there accessories so i assume they are just trying to protect there business model. Hopefully with the awarness raised possibly GoPro can assist GoScope in fixing the issues seeing as GoScope would also be bringing GoPro more business in the long run by creating a more usefull accessory for the OEM GoPro Camera
This is an issue of trademark -- the use of "Go" in GoPro accessories. By doing so, GoScope is piggybacking on the marketing and image of GoPro. (however minimal that may be) You might not like it, but that's the way it works. (in fact, they _must_ go after people infringing their marks, or they will lose that mark.)
I find this whole “issue” terriably naive. GoScope should just change their name. “GoPro had 6 months to strike down GoScope …” No, they have forever, which is being illustrated now. Im sure GoPro had more important issues going on in 2011 than to even discuss, much less respond to the GoScope noise. Anology: Brad Pitt is out having dinner. A fan runs up and says “I love you and I’m starting a clothing company called Brad Pitt Fasions". Pitt gives an awkward smile and says “cool”, and goes back to eatting. Did he give permission? No, there is a lot of noise in life and it should be ignored until it stops being noise and becomes a signal. Compliments to GoScope, they have arrived. Now, modify the name.

They made a stupid mistake that's for sure. Thinking they are big fishes, there is no such thing anymore, in the technology world you are no more than one season from a total crash if you loose your clients support.

The CMO of GoProp will tell you that trademark is an extremely important intellectual property law in the United States. It is the foundation of many businesses both small and large. GoScope is violating trademark law. It's not about feelings - it's about following the law.

GoPro started as a very humble and fun company, then bacame a greedy, money making machine.
GoPro has made many mistakes in the past few years.

That is what happens when you take a company public.
They sell you a 300$ accessory piece so you get the level of stabilization other cameras have already build in (Sony FDR X3000/HDR AS300).
***** Have you never used a gimble before? No in camera stabilization compares them, not even close.

100% behind goscope, I just bought a GoPole too (but same deal). GoPro loses all of my respect if they get rid of those little companies. If they succeed I'm selling my GoPro and buying a Sony, no tolerance for this bullshit
GoPro is already standing on burning platform, the moment DJI will release action camera they are done, they should act humble and be thankful to this company, who in any means support GoPro by making accessories which they never made for their own products, I hate when these big companies tries to eat small ones, I hope they understand and realize their mistake, otherwise KARMA will hit them like its already hitting them so hard.

Today....... Tomorrow GoPro will be worth nothing or gobbled up by real player. Sorry GoPro is/was mismanaged and missed their boat when they had had the chance to pounce.
The reason GoPro is doing this is because their stock is in the gutter and GoPro is most likely going to start making these accessories as a way to boost revenue ... GoPro had to recall the karma drones and sales on the hero5 were much lower than expected.

As a small time filmmaker who is just trying to start out I want to thank you, Devin, for being willing to stand up for the underdogs. One of the hardest things to do is to get people to believe in your dream, but it can be one of the most impactful ways to support a small company. It is refreshing to see someone selflessly defend what they believe in even if it causes GoPro to hate you. Awesome for you man. When we traveled we used a Goscope and when we were in a charlotte we met Kyle and Linds and they let's us stay in their house, took us too dinner. Amazing and loving people. Thanks for helping them out.

As a filmmaker I support your decision to speak out about this issue, considering we (as film gear consumers) are at the mercy of primary manufactures to supply usable products -- which they don’t often enough do. The massive accessoires from other companies was a reason for me to buy a Gopro. In the future I will look for an alternative.

Same here. There's a little bit of irony that I bought a GoPro because of the huge selection of accessories made by 3rd parties. If my only option was to buy all the attachments from GoPro, I might not have purchased the camera in the first place. Companies like GoScope are the reason I bought a GoPro.

At the moment I've got enough Actioncams. The best competitors are Sony and Xiaomi. Garmin is also good and the Map in the Video is a good thing. We all have the choice to buy what we think it's the best.

This is ridiculous - if Goscope had doen something like design their logo to be confusion it would be one thing. I would never confuse Goscope with GoPro themselves. Companies have to protect the IP, Brand and trademarks but this seems ridiculous and now seems like GoPro having declining revenues is going after companies selling accessories. This is signal of a company in desperation mode and I think there is a strong possibility that GoPro in a year will not be the company we have seen in the past.
I wonder how it's possible that in 2016 America, you can't fight back when big companies attack you and you do nothing wrong. What happened to the rule of law? What happened to free market? If that's really the case, as Devin describes it - then it's really time to MAGA. I wonder if GoScope voted Trump, LOL:D
Yep, that's exactly what's going on. Instead of going the socially responsible way like Polartec and Chobani they're seeking to bring accessories in-house and using threats of legal battles to force out the competition.
Thanks for taking a stand! And hey, confrontation is not bad or horrible, it's very healthy. And I always feel better afterwards, because it gets you moving forward, even if there was no solution in the end, I always feel that I, personally, have grown.

You forgot to mention the fact that the new 1.55 update doesn't except any aftermarket battery's other then the $20 OEM battery. Now company's like wasabi have aftermarket battery's that are useless. Such a shame.

GoPro accessories are so expensive, if all these companies get shut down I won't be able to afford any new accessories.
The thing is that these companies are making camera accessories not necessarily just for the GoPro, they're making them for all action cameras and other cameras. It's like saying Sony want all other companies to stop selling lenses for their cameras that aren't made by Sony or Apple stopping other companies from selling phone cases for their phones that aren't made by apple. GoPro are honestly just giving themselves a bad name doing this.

Konor Sacks i have garmin's gps. But for camera i was thinking about either buy a sony action cam or just keep using my gopro 3+ black that i bought a few yrs back. And yes i will return the gopro 5, cuz gopro pushed a new firmware update which makes all non-gopro brand batteries stop working. Gopro batteries are too expensive, i don't want to spend $100 just to buy batteries.
great stuff Devin. hope Gopro respond in a positive way. this would be a great opportunity for them to connect with it's audience.
before you do I would look at the virb, here are a few points from my memory... same quality video, talk to it, gps and accelerometer data that you can overlay on your video, they say great sound with a case, battery life can take a hit, costs the same as the hero 5, controllable from I think any garmin device, separate video and photo button, quick power on to instant recording then power of after you finish, take photos while recording, connects to accessories using ant+ and all the "extra data" can be overlyed on the video in editing using garmin editor, ant I think I am forgetting a few. so it is a cool camera.
Did you look at Sonys X3000? It has better image quality and stabilization than all the action cameras curretnly on the market :)

Hey man your an amazing person for making this video and trying to help out small businesses. This is just heartbreaking that GoPro would try to shut down a small business that makes no impact on GoPro revenue. All this is going to do is limit the use of GoPro cameras, i have found off brand accessories that work better for me then the main brand. Sometimes the main brand accessories are just so expensive for people to afford when they are starting out a business. While watching this video, I put myself in GoScopes shoes for a moment. This would be like you telling me that i cant watch your videos to learn tips and tricks and that would be heartbreaking because I watch your videos over and over again to see how to make the best use of your equipment. I just hope that GoPro gets this message and stops the legal action on GoScope.

+devingraham they are issuing a ton of "cease and desist" requests to many small companies that they never cared about previously. this is part of GoPros new business strategy for 2017. btw Nick Woodman is well aware. GoPros market share is recently being encroached on big time and they are nervous .

Or they do it the "economical way" and threat them, so they need to shut down and produce that gear on their own for a higher price mostly.

I buy my gopro accesories from Ebay anyways. If I had more money, I'd definitely buy from GoScope, because I wouldn't want to support GoPro. GoPro's prices are ridicilous - 80 euros for a 3 axis selfie stick 😠

Speaking of falling like a rock, their Karma drone falls like a rock. They had to recall it because of this. GoPro performance is really bad. Not a good investment.
