  • In this video I will in an "easy" way show how to re-grease the stiff aperture ring In Nikkor-H Auto 1:3.5 f=2.8cm.
Even if old Nikkor lenses look's almost similar they are not the same inside, and it's also the case with this old lens, just like someone ask, "does the aperture ring come's off after 8 3/4 turn just like the Nikkor-P" as it was normal in those old lenses, and of course it could be the "standard way" but.
No! in this Nikkor-H it takes almost 9 1/2 turn to come off the thread, and then the little screw hole should be almost inline with the index mark (it could be different in your lens...)
Then I use some Isopropylalcohol 99% on a brush and some cottonbuds to take away the old grease and dirt, then apply #10 helicoid grease and it all went fine again.

Could you perhaps make a video where you lubricate the focus ring? I have the same lens and the focus is so stiff. Or maybe you could just describe the process?

    Greetings, Kenneth!
I recall watching an earlier video where you commented on not being pleased with I the Helimax-XP grease. I was looking for another video where you might compare the results of another grease more to your liking. I have been using the MicroLubrol Helimax-XP grease and I'm very unsatisfied with it as most of my lenses are stiffer after cleaning than before. To date, I put the grease on very lightly, work the grease into the threads and then disassemble and wipe the threads with a clean terrycloth in my attempt to leave a very thin but continuous coat of grease film. But yet they are always "sticky", no matter how thin I apply the Helimax-XP
I see that you're using the Japan Hobby Tool Helical Grease #10 on this aperture ring project. This grease looks A LOT thinner than the Helimax-XP product. How do you like this grease and do you also use it on your focusing helicoids?
Thank you for your feedback. Your insight has been invaluable on many of my own projects.

I'm actually working on a video about the difference when using Helimax-XP or the #10, #30 from Japan hobby tool, just to show how big are the difference when turning the focus ring, but as you also discover, the Helimax-XP is more sticky.
I will also try some grease with MoS2 (Molybdenum disulfide)

Thank you for the quick reply Kenneth!
I'll be waiting impatiently for that episode, as I've become very acclimated to the low-resistance performance of the autofocus lenses, the heavy grease across the very large surface area of telephotos is unbearable for me. Especially those vintage lenses that also had quite a large rotation travel. But even the aperture rings are extremely stiff on these rings that have a significant thread engagement.
One concern that I have is that some of these lenses have an inner helical of brass working on the mating aluminum gears of which I expect to be resistant to galling. Some of these lenses run aluminum on aluminum where I suspect that may be very sensitive to galling should the lubrication not perform adequately. Through your experiences and research, I hope that you can shed some light on all the variables that we might need to consider when selecting the best lubricant and application methods to achieve our end goals. I expect that I might need to keep an inventory of multiple lubricants to full-fill the needs of multiple applications and desired outcomes.
Yes, as a sports, wedding or street photographer I might want a very light and fast focusing lens that can focus in milliseconds. As an astronomical, landscape or still photographer, I might want a "tight" lens that stays put throughout my photo-shoot.
Thank you for any insight that you can provide as I'll be impatiently waiting!

Good morning Sir, I'm trying to clean an Ennalyt 24mm f4 lens, but I can't get it to unscrew the first front ring. Can you give me some advice please?
I'm a beginner with no experience, but I bought all the equipment and would like to try. His lessons are truly educational.
    Thanks best regards

    Hej Kenneth
Tager du stadig opgaver? Jeg har et par nikkor linser der godt kunne trænge til en smøring i fokus.
Jeg kan ikke forstille mig at du ville koste mere en tiden til at lære det, materialerne og ærgrelsen når det mislykkedes.

Can use WD 40 to clean?

    • @cybernetik7209
      @cybernetik7209 5 років тому

This is a very bad idea.
WD40 - it is not a cleaning agent.
Its sparkling water with mineral oil designed to disassemble rusted threads.
