The first verse Nicki is reflecting on her life after writing the album and getting clean off of pills. She’s thinking clearly. Nicki said that this song was one of the last songs she wrote for the album but she knew it had to be the opener, that’s why she said “just finished writing, this is the PinkPrint!”.
In the second verse, Nicki talks about how her cousins passing really opened her eyes to how much fame has changed her and her family dynamics. The guilt was tearing her up, so she became addicted to pills to cope with her life. His sister said he wanted to see me, but I didn’t invite him.” She’s starting to realize the importance of family.
The final verse is my favorite. Nicki starts to open up about why she feels misunderstood by the industry and her immediate family. Nicki is remembering why she initially wanted to become successful so that she can take care of her family. It pains her to know that her relationship with them was strained because she was working so much and sort of “neglected” them. The chorus hints “I just want you to know that I did for you.” It’s like Nicki finally came to her senses and realized what is truly most important in the end.
