Kathy is profoundly deaf, aided by hearing aids. They did a video about it a year or so ago about it. If you watch it, you will laugh throughout. Whatever you expect them to do, that ain't it! Geoff and Voiceplay will be releasing their Halloween pieces in a week or so. Be prepared!! Bucky was with them prior to their rebranding as Voiceplay in 2012. He no longer sings professionally, but is a voice actor among other things. Really enjoying your reactions to Geoff and Voiceplay! Hope you took the chance to see their brief behind the scenes at the end.
There is an additional set of lyrics written in here by Geoff. I think that is what Ogre might have been referencing. Began with Jose in the slower mode 'Old Salts are We' and ended with Eli's '3 Sheets to the Wind', after which we got the spoken 'Carve His Heart Out' and Eli's & Jose's little conversation. And yes Kathy used to sing professionally as well, before her hearing loss degeneration. In fact she and Geoff used to perform in the same 'Beetleguise' show at Universal before they began dating. He played Frankenstein's Monster and she was his Bride. I believe another VoicePlay member (Tony, now co-owner of PattyCake Productions with Layne) played Dracula in the same show for awhile.
This is such a fun take on a fairly repetitive piece. Geoff wrote the bridge that starts the slower portion. He has been doing that quite a lot lately and it is often my favorite part of the whole song. The part about I’ll carve his heart out( with a wooden spoon) is a tribute to Alan Rickman in Robin Hood. The part with the whale and the boat is a nod to their cover of the Wellerman. The whale gets the boat and they are never to be seen again. And that explains why Eli keep shaking his head so frantically and looks so forlorn when the whale finally gets the boat. 🚤🐋 Always wait until the Patreon roll starts. They frequently will trick us by appearing to be done. In this one you missed some of the behind the scenes. If you watch their HALO, it would be a real disservice not to listen to the outro. In their cover of Hall of the Mountain King, there’s just a whole lot of silliness on Layne’s part while merchandising their newest T-shirt. Additionally, the outro is now generally playing the karaoke track in the background which is often a piece of music that’s worth listening to on its own. Kathy was a professional singer before she lost her hearing. She was in several rock bands and also in the Beetlejuice Rock ‘n’ Roll Graveyard Review at Universal Studios for 12 years. She was bride of Frankenstein and Geoff played Frankenstein for 10 years. Tony, that used to be their baritone and is now Layne’s partner in PattyCake Productions played Dracula. (I believe that J has played Wolfman as well. I remember reading that somewhere but now I can’t find the source. But they all have worked in the theme parks so I’m pretty sure that I didn’t just make that up.)
I'm surprised no one has commented earlier on this, but the chorus lines they're singing about "shave his belly with a rusty razor," "put him in a long boat till he's sober," "stick him in a scuppеr with a hosepipe on him," "put him in the bed with the captain's daughter" are all forms of punishment a sailor/pirate would have put upon him if he was found drunk/passed out, as generally all crew on board are needed at any given time. On side note, a "Captain's Daughter" isn't as pleasant as sounds, it's actually slang for a cat 'o' nine tails, which is a many tailed form of a whip. (That also being said, I suspect VoicePlay wanted to keep the video rated G/PG, hence the doll (Clara) and why "piss off" was in the outro lol) Musically, the foundation of this song, lyrically, is called, "call and response." Basically, if could fit they correct type of words with the theme of the song, it could go on indefinitely, hence why it's a good sailing/sea shanty song. Physical work goes a lot easier if you can put your motions to a beat/song. (I mean, who doesn't dance/sing along to music when they clean?) Lastly, shoutout to Geoff for arranging this song, and adding in his own lyrics. He's a Beastmaster 9000. It amps the song up a million when he does it. Souls aboard old salts are we We've raised the sails for open sea In the brine deep we hold our keep No matter sink or swim Believe me, lads, this scallywag Is three sheets to the wind
When Geoff says "I'm gonna carve his heart out." with a wooden spoon no less, it's a tribute to Alan Rickman when he was in Robin Hood. Eli follows it up with his best British accent, "We'll make him listen to VoicePlay while we do it." Still missed some! You got Kathy correctly. She does use hearing aids to prop up her profound deafness. She has become the production manager for both Geoff and VoicePlay. Buckey our drunken sailor used to be a member of early VoicePlay also known as 4:2:Five. Blew his vocals out and went to work for Disney as a voice actor. He did the choreography for Geoff's Monster Mash, has been in a couple of VP's shorts/minis (Candy Crush and 500 Miles). Since he lives in the Orlando area, it works to keep in touch, as VP is local as well.
This was such a fun song and helped brighten the room with much needed humor. I love that even though Geoff is proposing to carve out his heart (with a spoon) Eli is the moster for suggesting they make him listen to Voiceplay. Then their is the dancing, Cesar gets me every time. Bucky also helped Geoff with his dance on Monster Mash (if you haven't seen it I would recommend it) Yes it is Kathy, Geoff's wife, who has the hearing loss. She's committed that when she needs to find him and don't have her hearing aids she'll just follow the vibrations tell he's found. Thanks for the reaction, their new songs will be coming out soon 😊
This one is so much fun. Captain Jose shaving with the rusty razor. Eli crying over the whale eating the boat, and Cesar with the toilet seat. Geoff with the scary doll ( Clara )who has feelings, and him going to carve his heart out with a wooden spoon. BTW the drunken sailor is a past member Matthew Buckner aka Bucky. You will also find him in a couple of their shorts. Candy Caravan Escapaid and I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles). Shame on you. You didn't watch till the end of the video.
Matthew (Bucky) Buckner is a former member of VoicePlay when it was known as 4:2Five. He's also in their video 500 Miles. For another 4:2Five member who's moved on see their HALO Theme featuring (??). And that's another video that you have to keep watching after the song itself is over, please.
The person in HALO is Scott Porter who used to be the beatboxer before Layne took over. Scott is now an actor and I believe is most well known for his part in Friday Night Lights (and also Hart of Dixie). The outro for that is a must see. It tells so much about what kinds of people they are and it’s a really good look into what it was like for them and they were starting out and touring .
They often pack videos like this full of stuff happening simultaneously. This way you can rewatch the videos focusing on a different person each time and discover brand new fun stuff each time.
"There's so much going on!" That's said for nearly every VoicePlay video. 😂😂 They manage to pack so much into their shh..stuff. 😜 And yeah, Kathy used to sing with Geoff in the Disney shows back in the day. She's gone pretty deaf by this point so she doesn't sing much anymore but she can still hear with her hearing aids. Great reaction, guys! I always have fun watching you guys react to these Acapella groups. ❤
With Voiceplay you really have to watch until the patrons start rolling because they do have outro scenes now and then. The Bass Gang has started doing the same. You’re right that Kathy, Geoff’s wife, has lost her hearing. There’s a video about it on his channel. And yeah, watching Voiceplay is like watching a big box of squirrels-so much going on. Bucky also used to be part of Voiceplay way back in the day when they were named 4:2 Five. He’s in some of their short videos, and he has a really nice voice-I would love to see them have him as a featured singer sometime soon. Great reaction, guys!!
Voiceplay almost always has little goodies after the black screen, sometimes a message, karaoke tracks, remixes, or in this case a peek behind the scenes. Bucky did the choreography for Geoff's Monster Mash and appeared in two of their minis as mentioned by others. I guess they knew we needed something goofy between Creep and Hellfire coming up in a few days...Enjoyed your reaction to this. Geoff also has one coming out shortly , both of the new songs have been highly requested over the years. Hellfire is in their ACA Top 10 Disney Villains One of the most overlooked villains in any Disney movie I can remember.
Awesome reaction as always guys. There was even more after that outro. You would have seen some of the behind the scenes and heard Geoff's speaking voice. Always play to the very end with Voiceplay and Geoff. Never know what's they add. But they both do a shout out to their patreons. And Geoff adds a little speech and voice shout out to his highest tier patreons.
that long sustained Note held by Ellie, he did the same thing in This is Halloween towards the end he held the note for almost 20 seconds while riffing up and down the scale
Its never over until you see the patrons' list! I loved the reaction guys. Y'all need to react to their Halloween stuff this month. They do Halloween better than anyone!😊
There is a reason we will yell at you for ending before the credits on voiceplay... very often there are little things like that left. PS, voiceplay has already dropped their halloween offering for the year, if you want to see scary.
Please note that Home Free, VoicePlay, Geoff Castellucci, Tim Foust, and Austin Brown often have something going on in their videos after the song itself is over. Whether it's a small addition to the video (like here), further information about the song or writer, or just a few seconds of outtakes it happens enough to assume it's there until you know for sure it's not. At the end of one of one of Austin's videos he has a message of thanks to the community of reactors, calling out several by name.
Terrific reaction guys! I really hope you’ve got some Halloween themed VoicePlay or Geoff on your list this month. Along with the new stuff coming out this month from both VoicePlay and Geoff, I really recommend Geoff’s Monster Mash or Headless Horseman, or anything from Voiceplay’ Halloween list. They are the kings of Halloween!
We absolutely are! We've got something coming in Christmas, they are a part of our sound of silence battle that will be coming up soon and we're gonna try to sneak another one in there as well.

the angry beatboxing from layne after the whale incident... priceless XD
