    love this engine, for classics the 350 will always be my favorite, this engine is reasonably priced, and can put it in almost everything I like

    @ Pat Petit, While the zz4 is a 350 chevy, it is not the same engine as your stock 1979 Corvette, which was rated at 195 hp and had 8.2:1 compression. The zz4 has the newer style 1986-up block with one piece rear main seal with aluminum L98 cylinder heads and a roller cam and makes 355hp and has 10:1 compression.

    i have a zz4 in a 1979 chevy Malibu classic it has a old cast iron case power bw brute super t10.it has started for over 9 yrs. it is very reliable i had 327 l79 but you had to rev them.to make any power the zz4 the power is right off idle.

    I have the ZZ3 which is basically the same thing with a couple minor differences, I have the LT4 Hotcam and 1.6 roller rockers and make right around 400hp which is about maxing out the L98 heads. I love the powerband though, it makes power from idle to 6,200 rpm.

      I don't know what my name is I'm running my original '73 block in my Nova, polished heads and valves, very mild hydraulic flat tappet cam, bored .30 over, DyanMax headers, edelbrock 600cfm carb, and edelbrock intake manifold. Car is making 260hp @ 4,200pm and 316lb-ft @ 3,800rpm too the rear wheels, through a mostly stock TH-350 trans with a B&M shift kit and stock 2.73 rear end. That should be about 300hp, 363lb-ft at the crank. My engine is all low-end grunt, but still runs out too about 5,800rpm.
      Threw around the idea of getting the heads ported and a hotter cam, or just new heads all together, but ultimately decided not to. I'm perfectly fine with 300hp, 363lb-ft, as my Nova is a daily driver, not a Sunday-only car!

    • @HorsepowerGarageVideos
      @HorsepowerGarageVideos 9 років тому

      NovaMan 350 I have a 2.73 open rear end, it kind of sucks. I'll upgrade to something else eventually, probably 3.42. I have a 700r4 and my 1-2 shift is at 55mph and I can do over 100 in second, luckily I have enough torque that my car is still quick but it could be a lot better.

    • @novaman3509
      @novaman3509 9 років тому

      I don't know what my name is 700r4 for a 400hp car? A bit heavy, no? A well-built TH350 should work better with 400hp, as it weighs much less and gets power too the ground better.
      That said, the 700r4 is an undeniably great trans. Will certainly last forever.
      Wth my car, my 1-2 shift (at WOT) is about 30mph, then 2-3 shift is about 75mph, and it'll top out at around 140mph. At that point, my valves are floating a bit.

    • @HorsepowerGarageVideos
      @HorsepowerGarageVideos 9 років тому +1

      NovaMan 350 I have an 86 Iroc Camaro, 700r4 is the stock trans and I like having overdrive. I had it rebuilt and beefed up quite a bit 2 years ago so it should last a long time. My car originally had a 165hp 305 so I can only imagine how slow it was with the stock motor. My car will go faster than I will probably ever go in it, it's been to 155 mph on gps and I let off, that was fast enough for a 28 year old car with shit brakes and cheap tires on the rear.

      mark simms: yeah if you convert to a carb set up it should bolt right in. The mechanical fuel pump may have clearance issues but I doubt it will. When I got rid of my tpi305 in my 89 formula firebird and built alot meaner stroker 383 than the zz4 350. I went with a "Holley blue pump" outside the tank electric fuel pump. It also comes with a fuel pressure regulator. My stroker 383 makes 487rwhp through a t56. I originally replaced the stock 700r4 with a th350 with a 9" tailshaft so I could use the stock drive shaft. It was a fully built racing unit with a 3500rpm stall and full reverse manual valve body. It only lasted about 5 months and a couple of 125shot nitrous hits (engine and kit are designed for a 300shot). After the th350 burnt out I converted the car to a t56 6 speed manual from an Lt1 camaro and had it upgraded to handle the power. I used McLeod hydraulics (tick is better) because the factory master and slave are restrictive junk. I used a centerforce dual friction clutch but it only lasted about 9 months before it needed to be replaced, it would likely last a very long time behind a zz4. That clutch also wouldn't hold anything stronger than a 125shot with my engine. A spec stage 3 clutch kit is what I've found to work best for high horse power applications. If you plan to run the zz4 as a carbed engine (I would if you want real performance) make sure the kickdown/TV cable that controls the 700r4 is setup right on the carb or it will kill the transmission. It is a pretty easy conversion. I built the 383 and swapped it all when I was 16 years old back in 2000, in my drive way and I still have it. Good luck with it and do it right the first time or it will cost you more in the long run.

      Do it. I had a z28 3rd gen (same as yours) came with a 305 auto. Kept the tranny. Had it done over and beefed a bit with a shift kit. It had overdrive. No stall. 4.10 gears. Put this in it. With full headers and 650cfm carb. It was worth it on every level. Great at burnouts and drifting around. I'd recommend a car spacer. I went with a 3/4" and it made a big difference in throttle response . Had 2 3/4" exhaust with flomaster 10s. It was a college hot rod

    i would want to check the smog pump bypass pulley bracket installation.. i think its on upside down.. there should be more deflection in the belt between the bottom of the ac compressor pulley and the passenger side of the crank pulley.. this would also increase the belt tension .. i just does not look right to me..

    • @jonathanhudson4623

      If built right it will. The 700r4 isn't much different than a 4l60e and they live behind LS1 cars just fine. I've seen 700r4 transmissions live behind some pretty stought engines. You just have to make sure it is built right, has a good trans cooler, has a proper rear gear for your application, and is set up right with the kickdown/TV cable on the carb.

    • @JesterNR1
      @JesterNR1 9 років тому

      None. Still gotta get a transmission to go with it... which is mostly personal preference. It isn't a super beast motor, so just about any trans that will bolt up will work fine for daily driving applications. I use a 3-speed out of a 72 chevy truck. Its geared a little low, but its perfect for cruising around town and some highway. Would've gone with something different, but I had one laying around, so I used it instead of buying another one.

    L98 heads are not "free flowing" ... in fact they flow less than stock production heads of the 327 and 350 Corvette of the 60's. GM made aluminum heads with a C grade flow design and made them the stock units on the C4 Corvette. Thanks for the aluminum .. no thanks on the restrictive design.

    Seems like alot of kits, why not just make 2 kits, full on with everything and one without the heads and the intake? as it just seems like doing it this way makes it seem like the customer is getting less for more and its clogging up your catalog and confusing your customers.

      86 C4 has a very similar engine in stock form ..the L98. The L98 and ZZ4 have the same cylinder heads, both are roller cam blocks. ZZ4 has a tad more compression. The ZZ4 cam in an L98 would yield a very similar result.
