Probably the most criminally overlooked brawler on the Neo Geo. Many prefer its predecessors for the familiar roster, but this one has aged so, so much better gameplay-wise.
I L-O-V-E this game, is some kind of blend between art of fighting and tekken (gameplay wise), beautiful visuals, a good story line (not terribly good but still coherent enough for not wishing to skip the cutscenes). It has some nice features too, I remember playing it on the arcade and asking the arcade owner to set the date to 25th december to play on Robert's birthday to gain some edge against players XD. If you want to play it, it's on art of fighting collection for the ps2.
When I was growing up in the '90's, I never heard of the Neo Geo. I grew up on the Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, the PS1, PS2 and the GameCube.
I'm a collector, so I can understand the coolness of owning an original AES cart of this game, but I have this on my PS2 as part of the Art of Fighting collection. All three games, no load times and I paid $14.99 new for the disc!! Excellent trilogy. I loved the new art style they went with here.
The problem AoF3 is that it was far too easy to get or get knocked down. One punch or kick can simply knock down the opponent or get knocked down yourself.
@Theblargen Me too! The only variation in this series of fighting reviews was with the Fighters MegaMix where you could fight as the Daytona USA car. It would be nice if there could be more variety again. Lately, it's only been fighting games on various Sega consoles.
hard to believe a Neo-Geo console is STILL just as expensive now as it was over a decade age, in fact i think the prices on them have even gone up a few digits! when i was a kid nobody on my block could afford one, those were the games we could only dream about.. and it seems nowadays it hasn't changed. :(
@kevinmarquez19 those black bars are because of the game, wich does not support widescreen resolution. Take a look at the tatsunoko vs Capcom video, that does support widescreen but older games dont and stretching them to fit the widescreen would make them look worse.
Those arcade sticks remind me of one thing only... All the money I spent as a kid at the arcades. I don't even dare think about it! That's why I like gamepads :D
@Yosefhouser i think it's up to oppinion and taste when it comes to sf and ff.i personaly think sf is better,sf2,sf alpha 2,sf3 third strike and marvel vs sf are some of my fave games of all time.but i'm glad to see people picking fatal fury over street fight.fatal fury realy deserves it.
@dave4shmups The NeoGeo CD version of AOF3 is a scaled down port.; the character sprites are much smaller than the arcade game. The PS2 AOF Anthology uses the arcade version so the PS2 version does look better than the NeoGeo CD version without the load time.
Lol, "trained llamas"!! Mark rules! This game looks GORGEOUS!! And it's nice to hear that it's easy to get into, because I don't last longer then about 2 seconds in any of the Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter games. There is an Art of Fighting collection for the PS2; does anyone know if this game looks as good in that collection as it does on the Neo Geo CD??
l remember playing the first "Art of Fighting" in a video arcade, it was a such direct clone of Street Fighter II in every detail, it resembled Street Fighter II so much that we thought it was a parody (hence the games name). l never knew they turned it into a series of games thou.
@shadowtsunami oh ok i see, you could use an emulator but since neo geo CD games aren't that expensive and you wanna collect!? why not get the game? keeps it authentic to and your not using a key board to pull off moves.
OMFG, i rol with the ARTOFFIGHTING 3 PATH OF THE WARRIORRRR hehehehe, one thing though, you could REALLY show the game itself, the case, cd and so... amazing review
I love this game so much, i used to play it when i went to game room. i master it !! and i wanna challenge any one to it !! I can kick ass in this game !! hhh .
@Yosefhouser i agree,by my user name you could tell i'm a big neo geo/snk fan,and i have to say that unfortunatly the art of fighting games suck bad.all of them.aof 2 is fun with 2 players, but 1 player is just too hard.no one at neo geo.com seems to have ever completed it. the fatal fury games are truly the best games on the system, from ff1 to mark of the wolves.and the samurai shodown and obviusly kof games as well, but fatal fury is almost par with street fighter.
@juneflirtz Ryo and Ryu don't look much alike, sure they're both wearing Karate uniforms, but in truth, Ryo is just far enough for him to be legal. Besides, I hear in Japan they don't make such a big deal on things like that, wich is why people in Japan can sale fan manga of peoples series without getting sued. They let the fan manga slide, as it helps Manga artists get their start in the genre.
@LuxterTT I think Mark's already admitted that, yes, maybe he's not such a pro at said game, but he'll kick your ass at Ms Pac-man. Besides, I think it's better displays the initial appearance of the game if you were new to it & maybe wanted to give it a try, plus I don't think Mark would bother with hunting down someone that can play real good just to entertain those who know the game very well.
@malevolenceXXXensues Yeah, but I love the tackiness. Also the thought of Mark running from an angry mob carrying torches and pitchforks & tossing bricks at him makes me laugh inside. And then Edit Station 1 flies in and saves him, of course.
i still play this game every once in a blue moon. nice looking game, nice animation, nice sound, but everything else (namely control responsiveness) is complete ass. cpu can pretty cheap too haha. definitely doesnt play like the other 2 aofs or most snk fighters in general
What makes these a joy to watch is the reviewer's sense of humor.
Over a decade later and I can still come back to this review and be both informed and entertained.
The animation in AOF3 was slick as hell for the time and still holds up well today.
This is one of the best SNK fighters out there. I love the Mexican theme and backgrounds. The game is a blast too!
i love the music to the snk games! and the production quality for the character sprites in this game look stellar! nice review mark!
Probably the most criminally overlooked brawler on the Neo Geo.
Many prefer its predecessors for the familiar roster,
but this one has aged so, so much better gameplay-wise.
The sound in this game is really amazing. Great music and depth of sound.
I L-O-V-E this game, is some kind of blend between art of fighting and tekken (gameplay wise), beautiful visuals, a good story line (not terribly good but still coherent enough for not wishing to skip the cutscenes). I enjoy the way he speaks. He doesn't sound like everyone else.
I still love that reverb joke. And the invisible hand that slaps you when you say they name wrong. Mark is brilliant at making this stuff. :3
I'm a collector, so I can understand the coolness of owning an original AES cart of this game, but I have this on my PS2 as part of the Art of Fighting collection. All three games, no load times and I paid $14.99 new for the disc!! Excellent trilogy. I loved the new art style they went with here.
I live a few miles away from Brick, NJ. AWESOME!!
The problem AoF3 is that it was far too easy to get or get knocked down. One punch or kick can simply knock down the opponent or get knocked down yourself.
OMG wow! you review some of the best of the classic games.
@311fob yea but it have trouble playing in 16:9. plus there are slow downs if both you and your opponent are throwing projectiles
Mark is becoming the king of iron fist with all these fighting games recently.
@Theblargen Me too! The only variation in this series of fighting reviews was with the Fighters MegaMix where you could fight as the Daytona USA car. It would be nice if there could be more variety again. Lately, it's only been fighting games on various Sega consoles.

+Fluttershys Angel It isn't.
***** Not *as* expensive. Still expensive.
Yeah I got so many shout outs for this game. I donated this game as I had 2 copies of it.
I've got this on my phone and it looks even better
@kevinmarquez19 those black bars are because of the game, wich does not support widescreen resolution. Take a look at the tatsunoko vs Capcom video, that does support widescreen but older games dont and stretching them to fit the widescreen would make them look worse.
The traffic in brick is terrible!
XG Blast effect on Mark is awesome!
The animations look fantastic!
the sprites look amazing
Why does the sprites look smaller compare to the neo geo cart? probably to lower loading time...
Thumbs up if Mark's the greatest reviewer ever.
This game is criminally overlooked.
It did a lot of things right in comparison to the first two,
though i still prefer the second just for the roster.
Yeah, AES version is a nice option if you have a few thousand dollars to spare.
Robert Garcia's "YEEEEH" is awesome xD
@hiowaska I think you just need a pack of official CGR after-day wipes.
This game has a fluid fighting system, looks fun.
You can get a compilation of the 3 games on the PS2 for pretty cheap now, I don't know how smooth the controls are for it though.
Look at the 2d it's terrific wow!
@bazfanv2 oh i see. thanks for clearing that up.
This should be on PS3. I really mean it. And Art Of Fighting 2 as well.

There's been a lot o fighting game reviews recently, and I definitely can't disagree with that! XD
SNK always makes badass fighting games.
I'm one of those people who is really into the plots of fighting games. Including this one. Yeah.
This guy's INSANE! Love it!!!!
@danju2 i cant, my ps3 isnt backward compatible....and my ps2 died. and now....i have no space at all for one. ill get a ps2 again some day though
More I look at Robert; more I'm convinced his design is based heavily on Steven Seagal.
nice finisher there lord karnage
I had no idea Ron Burgundy was in a fighting game!!
awesomeness!
I know, but for that's game the prize worth it. In ebay is costing 300 bucks, when for the kof games the maximum prize is 200 bucks.
wow O.o looks nice.
Lol, "trained llamas"!! Mark rules! This game looks GORGEOUS!! And it's nice to hear that it's easy to get into, because I don't last longer then about 2 seconds in any of the Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter games.

@SickmanDamian666 It's probably blinking, which tends to turn invisible on youtube
@shadowtsunami This is NOT an emulator
Great soundtrack.
@lazzigor I suggest you look at the CGR review of XG BLAST!
Neo Geo FTW!
l remember playing the first "Art of Fighting" in a video arcade, it was a such direct clone of Street Fighter II in every detail, it resembled Street Fighter II so much that we thought it was a parody (hence the games name).
l never knew they turned it into a series of games thou.
lol at the xg blast tht slapped mark ,awww it just slapped me now :P
@shadowtsunami oh ok i see, you could use an emulator but since neo geo CD games aren't that expensive and you wanna collect!? why not get the game? keeps it authentic to and your not using a key board to pull off moves.
I didn't care for the first 2 Art of Fighting games, but AoF 3 was awesome.
I'd love to see Mark reviewing Desert Bus for the Sega/Mega CD. :-)
Now New Jersey is officially epic
Hoping they release this game on Vectrex Virtual Console.
Ron Burgundy: Brick, where did you get a hand grenade?
Art of Fighting 3 is also on the Art of Fighting Anthology for the ps2. I think. Thats like 7 bucks at gamestop.
Amazing Visuals^^ Neo-Geo is a nice system i guess^^ Are there any of those Nice Looking Neo Geo Fighting Games on Wii Virtual Console?
OMFG, i rol with the ARTOFFIGHTING 3 PATH OF THE WARRIORRRR
hehehehe, one thing though, you could REALLY show the game itself, the case, cd and so...
amazing review
the dude in the beginning looks like the first boss from streets of rage 2 :o woot
If you really wanna save money. Download the Art Of Fighting 3 Arcade Rom and play it on Mame.
3:54 best part
I love this game so much, i used to play it when i went to game room. i master it !!
and i wanna challenge any one to it !!
I can kick ass in this game !! hhh .
@IdleRarity I thought cats were the reason, though I agree with you.
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and GoldenEye 007 both sell for $1000 on Amazon new factory sealed

@joaovictor1994 YEEEH! I noticed that, too.
@xxbeholderxx It supposed to be dry humor.
How the hell did he get that cool audio remix in there? the NEEEWWWW JERSEEEY YEAH!!!
Id like to see a Rival Schools review
Fighter's Destiny for the N64! Fighter's Destiny for the N64!
@Shaderaygun i belive he said this was
fighting week
Dude. Rody-Birts has tonfa. That's sick. :D
Sinclair is a hidden character, so I guess she has "SNK boss syndrome" just like Wyler
xg-blast has potential to become a really great running gag
*SLAP*
ah damn!
@pippigladstone Even if you could that doesn't mean that Mark doesn't suck.
@LuxterTT I think Mark's already admitted that, yes, maybe he's not such a pro at said game, but he'll kick your ass at Ms Pac-man. xgblast looks- OW HEY COME HERE! (kills stupid hand) XG BLAST looks awsome!
Robert Garcia vs Karman Cole - A gentleman's bout
Or AES Version.
@danju2 that doesn't really work on most ps3s
that is very odd... for some reason only one character can have a shadow under him at a time.... neat review. neo geo ftw.
If you want it cheap without load times then why don't you get the AoF collection.
this one has nice sprites
People from Brick, NJ carry bricks around? Does the same apply to people from Boulder, Colorado? That must be a pain.
The XG blast joke *slap* Ouch! I mean, the XG BLAAAST!!! joke never gets old )
awesooome game.
@Proygon2000
*Mountian Dew
@malevolenceXXXensues Yeah, but I love the tackiness. Also the thought of Mark running from an angry mob carrying torches and pitchforks & tossing bricks at him makes me laugh inside. And then Edit Station 1 flies in and saves him, of course.
