The most beautiful page in the history of the Polish working class. A story that should not be thoughtlessly honored, but a lesson for all workers around the world. Here is a united working class that has been able to accomplish the impossible - to force a regime that knew only brute force to negotiate. What happened next teaches us one more thing, Never trust politicians. It was they (both communists and oppositionists) who got along with each other and betrayed the workers. After this blow, the working class in Poland to this day cannot get up, and it is not surprising that we are treated by others as cheap labor.
Like the fact that this song got so much recognition. But as a polish guy sadly I can only say that Solidarity turned out to be a joke after the years. The working class was hit the hardest by the transformation, the intelectuals took all the leading roles in the Solidarity and now Solidarity has forgotten about most of the workers outside their precious drydocks and coal mines. Think the polish workers need to fight to make their stand again. This time against capitalism.
Yes of course that was an achievement that our people ended a tyrannic regime, and they did it without using force. But what people often don't say is that the original aim of the Solidarity movement was not to change system, but the strike actions were ignited by rising food prices. The aim of the Solidarity was to raise the state of welfare of the working class. The workers opted for respecting workers rights, public help for people raising children, labor-free saturdays. The struggle for political change came second. And after many aspiring politicians used the workers to change the system and take the power the average Joe was the one who paid the price of the economic transformation. A nation with nearly no uneployment went into a era of 17% unemployment, and the standards of living of thousands of workers in the state-ran workplaces deminished. Now still worker's rights in Poland are ignored by hundreds of employers, still there is no compensation for being a full time parent, the public sector is underfunded, homlessnes risen by 1/5 in 5 years. Thinks like that make me think- "So what was the point of all that struggle, if the honest, working people in the front lines of political struggle were the victims of the change they fought for"? I' no fan of authoritarians, but I would prefere a different change for my people. I don't want us to be a country of cheap labor for foreign investors with "special economic zones" aka sweat shops with f...ck-all worker rights policies, and a bankrupted public sector udercuting itself by closing schools and preschools in the countryside. I want my people to live the dream of that year 1980- a nation of active citizens having a say in economic reforms of the country, being free to join a worker's union, economically self-sufficient, where everybody has access to a public healthcare (becuase today it is only theoretical), with access in nurseries for all children, with access to cheap housing and leisure time for workers.
+tim steinfort hey Tim, what I always admired of you, was your solidarity. you never gave a shit about any side, just being proud to be working class.
