Soul of the crew? Edi plugged in aside...the Normady is a part of the crew...she's helped save the galaxy...and her younger sister (SR2) proved that any ship nammed Normady will help get the job done
This is the moment where I knew that video games are high art. The way the scene was shot, the music blending perfectly into it, and the Normandy being kept in the shadows giving the feeling of "No...Fucking...Way...". I seriously did not expect a scene simply showing a space ship to make me cry and I wasn't even a sci-fi fan at the time!
There's not a single moment in video game history that makes me shiver and get goosebumps all over like this one (except for when ending of ME2, when the Normandy flew away from the explosion, and then Reaper fleet arrived). Freaking epic Normandy.
IM: "I've approved a special lighting setup for the SR-2 space dock." Miranda: "But sir... that's a significant amount of credits. There is no practical purpose..." IM: "Take my word for it - it'll be worth it."
When I started Mass Effect 2 I was afraid a lot of the crewmembers of ME1 would not be there. Same for the Normandy. During this scene I was like "F*CK YEAH!"
The Illusive Man truly believed Shepard would make decisions in the favor of humanity, and trusted in him. However, his agendas for the supremacy of humanity were separate from it's salvation from the reapers, which is why he let Shepard do his thing with minimal intervention (although a lot of oversight).
All these years later this scene still stirs my heart! As a child I dreamed of commanding an interstellar space cruiser. To be able to live and walk through its corridors, interact with the crew and go on heroic missions. This game allowed me to live that dream.
no, a legend is REBORN! This ship is so awesome it has its own theme music. The enterprise has nothing on this baby. She is as much a part of the crew as any of the members, she is the glue that holds it all together... and she is back and better than ever! It is more than just a ship, it is your sanctuary and shelter from the storm. Im so glad Cerberus rebuilt her.
when I started playing ME2 for the first time and saw Sr1 getting blown up, I was like FUCK YOU BIOWARE, then this cutsceen stars on my screen. When it ended, I stood up from my chair raised my hands and started screaming FUCK YEAHHHHHH! It has been 2 years since that moment, this cutsceen always leaves me with my mouth hanging sorry for bad england
They truly managed to make players see the ship as a character in the game and also as a beloved friend and companion. So this scene is akin to realizing that the friend you thought dead has been resurrected. I love Mass Effect so much.
7 years ago I cried during this scene of happiness seeing my ship again... A couple of days ago I cried during a short Andromeda play-through, realizing how horrible it is and that The Mass Effect saga is indeed over and done.
Like many others, I got a little* choked up at this scene the first** time I saw it. After the sick gut punch of the first 10 minutes of the game - losing the Normandy - bringing Shepard back from the dead, losing track of all the original crew - this - oh yes, THIS... Sometimes I watch this and some cynical part of my mind is cursing Bioware for being so damn good at being manipulative bastards with my emotions. Then I STOMP on that little bastard cynic until it shuts up. You know what this reminds me of? And in no way am I calling this a rip-off. It IS it's own thing. But the feeling it evokes is VERY similar. The end of Star Trek IV. After all the heartbreak of losing Spock and the destruction of the original Enterprise, they've spent pretty much a movie and a half without a place to call home. You think they're going to never have a ship like the Enterprise again - and it looks like the shuttle is headed for the Excelsior. Then they crest over the saucer of the Excelsior and you see her... NCC-1701-A. Enterprise. I saw that the first weekend live in the theaters. The studio had done a damn fine job of keeping this little secret under wraps. NO ONE knew about this! And I was in a theater with a bunch of my friends in the local Sci-Fi and anime fan clubs making up at least half the theater audience. The cheers and applause were DEAFENING! And not a dry eye in the house!! Kirk: "My friends... We've come home." To have a VIDEOGAME pull THAT same type of FEELS. Yeah. Don't goddamn tell me that Videogames aren't ART!! (*Okay - A LOT) (** Every damn time)
I have to agree with you about ST:IV since even though you know the actors are acting, they do such a good job when they see the Enterprise A that it makes you wonder for just a second if they themselves had been kept in the dark about it.
Watching this scene, gives me goosebumps even as I'm typing. After so many hours, after so many epic feelings and experiences through the original game and after going through the horror of watching the Normandy get destroyed.. This scene is just.. yeah, I can't explain it. It's like someone returned a lost piece of my soul to me.
This ship, to me at least, ranks up there with the Enterprise and the Serenity insofar as recognition. The Normandy should have a special place in every scifi nerd's heart as one of the greatest starships of all time. I am not ashamed to admit that I cried when the original was destroyed, and when this one was revealed. Something neither of the previous two ships mentioned can claim.
I remember this scene from my first playthrough in 2011. At that time i didn't know Mass Effect very well and Mass Effect 1 wasn't available on PS3, so I started ME2 without knowing the first one. I saw this scene and I honestly didn't felt anything. In 2014 I played ME1 finally and replayed the second and...what can I say...one of the biggest goosebump moments in my life and a lot more to follow. What an incredible game series!
Everyone talks about the gameplay and story with Mass Effect but nobody mentions just how damn good the soundtrack is. "And let history never forget the name...Normandy.”
I remember seeing it all those years ago. That was the moment I knew I was up for another long, awesome adventure. Mass Effect Trilogy is still the best gaming experience of my life, will be stuck in my head forever.
Its weird how the scene give me a "Nice to see you again my old friend" Feeling gives.. even when the destroy of the Normandy SR-1 was just 1 Hour Playtime in the past
There's some icons out there, the Millennium Falcon, The Enterprise, Galactica, Serenity and newly the Rocinante.... The Normandy though it's up there.
Only thing stopping ME3 from being my favorite of the series is the ending. If it only had a happy ending. Moments like this are why ME2 is my favorite.
Is anyone getting super nostalgia right now watching this. It makes me sad that I can't live in this moment again, back in January of 2010, where there was no controversial ending or anger about what was or wasn't in the game, instead just getting one of the greatest experiences and building the greatest cast of characters ever in a video game.
The Tempest doesn't even feel the same, not even 1%. It's just a random ship with apparently no fking weapons to defend itself when comes into hostile contact, with a bunch of some angsty teenager crew (except Vetra, Drak and Jaarl), and a guy that lacks any whatsoever experience to lead them.
we have. You have to remember, back when ME2 first came out, players from ME1 have waited YEARS to finally step on the normandy again, explore the galaxy again, be heroes etc. But right at the beginning, all we get is to see how the normandy is destroyed. It was one of the most epic game introductions I have ever seen. I was really stunned, finnally ME2 is here and... the normandy gets blown up before I even have the chance to.... and then.... then... this happens and you feel so deeply at home
I remember not being sold on ME2 yet up until this point, but as soon as this scene started playing and the lights started coming on around the ship...... I knew I was home. THIS is how I choose to remember Mass Effect, for its amazing moments like this
This is how I'll write it for my fanfic project: "I've found a pilot you might like," the Illusive Man says. "I hear he's one of the best. Someone you can trust." And just like that, the call ends. Right as the whirr of the comms device dies down, I hear footsteps and that all-too-familiar voice. "Hey, Commander." I turn around, and can't believe my eyes. It's really him. "Just like old times, huh?" [...] We step out of the elevator to the hangar level, as I follow my friend through the hallways of the Cerberus station. "I can't believe it's you, Joker." "Look who's talking!" he replies, his voice delightful and relieved. "I saw you get spaced!" I shrug. "Got lucky, with a lot of strings attached." I look at him again in wonder about how my friend is by my side. "How'd you get here?" "It all fell apart without you, Commander. Everything you stirred up, the Council just wanted it gone." His voice now sounds with a hint of sorrow. "Team was broken up, records sealed, and I was grounded. The Alliance took away the only thing that mattered to me." He scoffs. "Hell yeah I joined Cerberus." I raise my eyebrow at him. "You really trust the Illusive Man?" Jeff curtly shakes his head. "I don't trust anyone who makes more than I do. But they aren't all bad." Given I have them to thank for being alive again, that's fair enough. "Saved your life. Let me fly--" He nods to the big windows in front of us. "And there's this. They only told me last night." One by one, in the hangar bay, the overhead lights flicker on and reveal what I thought I'd never see again. It's my ship, coming out of the shadows like a phoenix rises from the ashes. Back from the dead. Its red has been replaced with a vivid dark yellow, and on the front, the Cerberus emblem stands out against the main white paint. "It's good to be home, huh, Commander?" Joker gives me a slight nudge, and I nod, a smile appearing on my face. "It most definitely is." I turn back toward the windows, looking at the reborn ship. "I guess we'll have to give her a name." [...] Some time later, the final touches are done, and the Normandy has now really risen from the ashes. In front of us, the massive double doors of the dock open, revealing the endless space beyond. Slowly, Joker navigates the ship out of the station into the infinite sea of dark blue and the glittering stars.
Bioware writers are amazing because they made the Normandy herself an ACTUAL character not just a ship.
Its just like the enterprise in old trek she was the most important character in the show
