    I just got my first violin in the mail. Very excited, but intimidated. BluegrassDaddy totally breaks it down and I am well on my way to getting it all set up. Not even finished yet (on video 3) but I had to take a moment to say how great I think this guy is. I am a direction follower and I watch a lot of instructional videos on UA-cam. What I really appreciate here is how thorough his instruction are without being boring. Well done!

    I just got the same violin from eBay because I wanna see if I like violin and it was cheap. I wad so afraid for it being my first time setting up a violin and I couldn't understand why it wouldn't make any sound even after I used rosin. your trick was fantastic by scratching the surface of the new rosin with a coin. I rubbed it on for 5 minutes like you and it finally makes sound. thank you so much you were so helpful! this is my first time owning a violin. If I end up actually persuing the violin I'll buy a better one. cheap ones on eBay are good if you're just experimenting and getting a feel for the violin. I got the black one

    From the varnish, it looks like low-cost Chinese violin. I bought one about 50 years ago, which was incredibly cheap, including a hard case and bow, and even a block of resin. I played with it for long enough to convince myself that I was never born to be a violinist. It was quite a pretty instrument, and I won a photographic competition with a picture of it, lit by candles. It had quite a loud sound, but very harsh. I thought it sounded much better if I clipped a mute over the bridge, which mellowed the sound somewhat. In the right hands, however, it would probably have been a well suited sound for certain kinds of music.
    I finally took it to a violin shop to sell it. The guy behind the counter opened the lid and looked at it for all of - oh - a second before closing it again, and said "Sorry - we don't deal in the Chinese violins"

    Hi, John. Thank you so much for the excellent guides for us newbies. My violin would not tune properly as others have stated. While attempting to tune, my pegs would also slip back as soon as I released them. Then my A string seemed not to move at all, no matter what. I purchased a similar fiddle on eBay for about the same price. Was the nut and fingerboard a single piece on the one you purchased? The one I ordered was unfortunately and the nut was misshapen and the string slots were cut to deep and not even in the correct spots. I ended up having to cut out and file down where the nut should sit and installed a ebony nut I purchased at a local music shop. The bridge also required quite a bit of work to get the proper string height and the feet to sit properly. I also had to properly fit the tuning pegs due to the fact that they did not fully extend into the second hole to hold them stable. All in all it came out very nice for the price invested but it's hard to imagine simply installing the bridge as the instruction print out that was included instructed to do. In your video it appears you simply installed the bridge as it came and was ready to play. Did you do nut adjustments and bridge fitting off camera?

    • @johncockman8374
      @johncockman8374 4 роки тому

      The nut was separate from the fingerboard, and the bridge was cut to fit. Minimal setup!

    I have the exact same violin and setting it up for the first time :) well, already broke a string trying to tune, because I can't control the pegs :(

    • @Bluegrassdaddy
      @Bluegrassdaddy  10 років тому

      It does take some practice to control the pegs, because of the way that they taper. You have to push in with just enough pressure to keep them tight, but not so much that you can't turn them.

    • @GrimsLegacy
      @GrimsLegacy 10 років тому

      so I should push as I rotate?

    • @Bluegrassdaddy
      @Bluegrassdaddy  10 років тому +2

      GrimsLegacy Yes, otherwise you may turn too fast. You want a good amount of friction as you turn, or else it may go too far. Sometimes strings break because you think the pitch should be higher when in reality it is already too high. This happens a lot when people use pitch pipes, which seem more high-pitched than the violin string because of its high overtones. It takes a little practice to compare the pitch of two different instruments.

    • @carlwilbur4733
      @carlwilbur4733 8 років тому +1

      Jashien, unfortunately you will most likely have to go to a local violin shop or seek out a luthier to fix that issue.... there are special tools that are needed to set the soundpost and the soundpost has to be set in exactly the right position otherwise your violin won't sound good

    Found this video cuz I am looking for information regarding the bridge. Just had a new violin arrive and the bridge did not have grooves. I noticed Tue one in this video didn't either. Is it needed? If so, how do I do that?

    • @Bluegrassdaddy
      @Bluegrassdaddy  10 років тому +2

      A new bridge is called a "blank." Because no two violins are the same, It is taller than it needs to be, and the feet are thicker than they should be. The feet must be sanded to fit the top, and the height must be lowered to match the fingerboard. Next position the strings where you want them, mark the spot, and make some grooves. To create grooves, fold a piece of sanding paper and use the folded edge. Don't use a knife. The groove should be about a third as deep and wide as the strings -- just barely enough to hold them in place.

    • @Bluegrassdaddy
      @Bluegrassdaddy  8 років тому

    • @Bluegrassdaddy
      @Bluegrassdaddy  10 років тому +1

      If your strings are the type that tie to a small metal torus torus on the tail piece end, it is sometimes hard to fit them into place. You may need to loosen the fine tuners until there is enough clearance for the torus to slide past and slip into place.

    I dont get why they dont send the violin with the bridge alrdy installed on it. Why is this??
    I got the same violin on ebay for $28. 2 day shipping. So fast. 1 string on my bow was ripped 😣 but i cut it off and i saw 1 very lose string on bow, so i cut that one off too. Hopefully it doesnt change sounds or affect the sounds.
    Also, can i super glue the bridge on? Or do you recomend not to do that? Can i tape it on? I want the bridge to be secure.

    • @tcphll
      @tcphll 6 років тому

      It is weird. On most violins, if the strings and bridge aren't set up, the sound post would fall off, as it's held there by tension of the strings. It sounds like these cheap violins have the sound post glued into place. And NO do not superglue your bridge into place. If the fiddle is in tune, the bridge will be secure, but it's very important it's in the right place for proper intonation. Don't worry about broken hairs on the bow though. That'll happen even with very expensive bows.

    We have the exact same violin off amazon mine came differently though will u please help me my new bow wint make sound and i have put rosin on it multiple times i dont know what to do

      Sometimes the rosin takes a while to stick to the bow hair, and in fact it just takes the bow a while to get broken in. When we rehaired bows, we used powdered rosin first to help the regular rosin go on evenly. I would simply keep putting rosin on it until you get enough on the hair for it to make sound.

      RIght -- new bows don't come powdered so you have to put on a lot of rosin. If you are using a new cake of rosin, you may want to rough it up with some sandpaper or a nail file to get started.

    i just bought a violin , im beginner
    the fine tuner has only 3 screws, is it missing 1

      Did you sort it out? I've had the same problem with my electric violin, which I bought second hand. In the process of trying to replace a missing fine adjuster screw, I found you can buy a very cheap plastic tail piece on ebay, with four of those screws in it.
      The screws were too thin for mine, but there's a good chance they'd be the same one as on yours - most of these cheaper instruments and parts come from the same factories.
      Alternatively, you could buy a single fine adjuster, meant for fitting to an older tail piece that didn't come with any, or maybe just came with one - and take the screw out of that. I found the screws on those were the same as on the cheap tail piece I bought, and that didn't cost much more, so its probably worth getting - that way you'd have spare parts.
      If you can't get a screw that fits, it's not the end of the world. Make sure you have a screw on at least your E string. I'd suggest getting some peg paste too (aka peg compound), to make your pegs turn smoother and grip better. I've just watched a video where someone recommended peg drops, which look even easier to use. I hadn't heard of those.

      ARTgamer ARTgamer you can buy individual fine tuners to screw in place quite cheaply.

      Try to sandpaper the shiny rosin just a little bit and start rubbing the rosin to your bow :)
