Hi Mike. I also have a 1983 280SL 5 speed. Your instructional videos have enabled me to basically restore my car. Have you ever attempted to repair or replace the canal/grove where you insert the weather strip for the soft roof boot?

Thanks for your comment and I'm glad some of these vids have been helpful. The answer is 'no' but this is something I need to do on my silver 280SL The red 280 SL I am working on has already had this repaired. I think it will be quite tricky to do that channel. My initial thoughts were to do it in two pieces rather than try and bend the metal into that shape. A great channel for this kind of work is Fitzee's Fabrications - the video below will give you an idea of what might be involved.

Hi Mike and thanks for your reply. I've made several adjustments to the strike plate but no luck. The very front of the door lines up perfectly the rear of the door won't tuck in? I know what you mean about the hinges, think that would be a real can of worms. I'm going to remove the striker and see if it will set in. Cheers Cameron

Good plan. Remove strike plate and take it from there…..hopefully the door hasn’t been bent in the past. Mike

Hi Mike, no it didn't make a difference removing the strike. I think it's something at the very bottom corner of the door. I'm going to have another look at it today, I'm pretty sure the door itself is okay. Thanks again for your help.

Good luck - let me know you get on. I ran into problems once when it transpired that much filler had been used on a repair and then painted over. The repair was obviously done relative to the position and fitting of the old seal. Mike

Mike, I just installed the door seal on my R107, it went on quite easy but the door won't close tightly now. Any suggestions? Cameron

Sorry to read you are having problems with your door closing. Assuming the seal is fitted correctly, first I would try adjusting the strike plate on the car body. As a last resort, you might have your adjust hinge….but that can be a nightmare to get right. Good luck. Mine

This is a bit of a shot in the dark but something you may be able to help me with, I am currently repairing crash damage to my 380SLC. On removing the outer wings I found they were bonded to the inner wings with a type of rubber compound, the same substance has been coated to underside of the vehicle. The question is would you know what it is, is it still available and if it is where can I purchase it. Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks for your email and sorry to hear of the damage to your SLC. Originally, the outer wings were bonded to the inner wings with adhesive making it really difficult to separate. Sometimes a heat torch helps. I'm not aware that the same product would have been used elsewhere on the vehicle especially on the underside. Usually this part of the car would be coated with an underseal as opposed to an adhesive. I've seen or come across this product - Maybe the classic centre in America would know - or maybe the SL Shop in the UK? Mike

Have you done the weather stripping on the hardtop around the windows? I’m trying now and it seems impossible

Thanks for your comment - a few people have asked me the same thing but the answer is 'not yet'. What issues are you having - is it the glue, the fitment.... ? Mike

I’m finally on my way to the UK. Hope to get to Keynsham after the 21st. If you’re up for a coffee, drop me an email. I’d love to show off my car to someone (anyone really)!

Thats sounds good. Lets wait for a sunny day and hook up for a coffee. We could even do a video on the price range of an SL - eg what you can expect top get for your money. I have SL's ranging from £1200 up to £25k but nothing beyond. Who knows....might even have the project car running by then....Mike
