@eatshitdie1 screennames and/or calling names aside I am genuinely curious why you consider people "dummies" for thinking it is for oxygen delivery for people with COPD since it actually looks like it could work for that. Although I am not convinced by the claimed benefits using this contraption, over just flexible light polymer lines they use nowadays.

I can't help but wonder if something like that would be advantageous for someone who required O2, but also wanted to move around a lot, say someone working in their lab or shop, who could plumb a line in, and instead of carrying around a bottle of having a hose you could trip over, you could plug it in at the station you were working at, then just unhook it and move across to your other bench and plug it in there. I'm not suggesting this is what it was for, but it seems like it would be a more comfortable and even safer way to deliver O2 in in certain settings.

I think the nose-spectacles are perhaps to isolate smell. For example if you smelled something concerning or odd. You would put it on and wave the end of the tube around sniffing. this would isolate the smell you receive to a specific place in the air. In a practical environment perhaps if you work at a industrial place with gases with noticeable scents and you needed to track down a particular pipe or gauge that was broken it could help.
    Just a thought

I think the nose tube glasses thing is for precision smelling! Like a stethoscope, but for smells! :) Point the end at something that requires a sniff, inhale with the nose, and the scent of the thing travels through the tube and into the nose, without having to get your face right into it. Since it's a small area, the scent of other nearby things wouldn't convolute the scent of the target as badly as if you brought it up to your face. Maybe for medical applications, like smelling wounds or other kinds of diagnoses where the condition produces a scent. Also seems like it would be able to get a smaller dose of chemical inhalation (for safety) compared to the method famous to chemistry students: the "wafting method".

  • @GeoffreyFeldmanMA

My grandfather made something similar. He had trouble breathing very cold air so he made an apparatus that was like a mask that went over his nose and mouth which had a tube that hung down inside his shirt. This let him breath in air that was already warmed by his body. That way he could be out in his unheated workshop even in winter.

The oxygen tube suggestion by others seems a likely explanation for the glasses, but as a glasses wearer myself, I have found (particularly in recent months for obvious reasons) that when wearing a mask that covers my nose, breathing will fog up my glasses, so a tube like this would be a fantastic solution for that.

    3 applications for the glasses:
-Glasses fog up when you wear a surgical mask. If you breathe out through the pipes around the glass and the temperature of the glass equalizes with your breath they might not fog so much.
-Also it can be a breathing apparatus like a gasmask for someone with a beard and/or mustache (since they cant wear normal airtight masks).
-Thirdly it can be for oxygensupply to people with damaged lungs. This setup looks easier to maintain and is more robust than current tubes. Especially relevant now that alot of people might need extra oxygen because of damaged lungs.

I got one idea. Doctors who are hard of hearing need a way to listen to patients’ heartbeat with extreme sensitivity. A stethoscope drum at the union bottom end covers the patients chest. The doctor knows the rhythm of the heart when he feels it through sensitive nostril receptors. The rubber tube at the nostril has been adjusted for sensitivity / changed to personally suit that doctor. TLDR - union end goes on a chest, spectacles are for hearing.

During the Black Plague many believed that smelling sweet substances prevented disease caused by miasma, a form of “bad” air given off by decomposing organic matter. This shaped the work of plague doctors, who donned protective masks inspired by the shape of a bird’s beak to accommodate aromatic materials like rose, carnation, mint, spices, and camphor. Perhaps this was another form of one of these aromatic delivery systems.

Perhaps the idea was: where the glasses assist faltering vision, the tubing was meant to assist faltering smell? Like a stethoscope for the nose? Interesting idea, but I don't think it would be very marketable. Leaning in and wafting is pretty effective. Not to mention the potential safety hazard of sticking the sampling end over something noxious and channeling it directly into your nostrils.

I think the glasses are for distance smelling. Doctors used to sniff patients to help with diagnosis, perhaps it was for doctors, kind of like a stethoscope. For example, people with liver problems can often exude bad smells through their skin, people who are dehydrated have an acetone smell on their breath.

Maybe it's for blowing the breath air to the glass to get rid of fog in the winter either by blowing in the union or just normally breathing through nostrils. There maybe holes on where it connects to the frame

I think it's missing 2 seal gasgets for the nose and then bottom part or I should say on the top part when using it there is like a float so you can breathe under water.

The spectacles may have been used to deliver nitrous oxide in dentistry. The frames would keep the tubes well away from the mouth and would allow for breathing the gas mixture. Nitrous was available in dentistry in 1844 and there were a lot of innovations in delivery systems.

The spectacles are an early form of oxygen delivery. I would LOVE to have frozen in time(plastic) energy block. I would find a way to back it or have a small LED light and use it for a mild night light of sorts..one could meditate by looking at it in a dim, quiet room.

I think the idea of the spectacles is to focus smell. Just like the glasses focus light, the tube allows you to focus all the smell of something small to your nostrils.

the spectacles with the tube for some odd reason ive seen them before and the thing thats jumping out at me is that its from WW1 and has something to do with tunneling ive seen them in a WW1 museum before i think it was used to find gas leaks or try and smell out the enemy using particular chemicals or explosions or equipment i think? on the end was a large rubber cone sort of like a stethoscope

Very interesting items. I wonder if the glasses tube was used to inhale menthol or perhaps mild steam fro dry sinuses?

The nose tube thing is like a periscope for smells so you can avoid going around corners where bad smells might be.

I bet it is for oxygen. If you look at Robert d hales at LDS General conference he had a pair of those so that he could give a speech without needing a bulky oxygen tube.

    • @ragnkja
      @ragnkja 4 роки тому

Or rather, without the oxygen tube adding _additional_ bulk, since I imagine having to wear both the glasses and the typical support for the oxygen tube would feel rather bulky behind the ears, and this combines the two into one object.

I kept looking for a way to comb my beard without dealing with static electricity, thank you for sharing this Professor. I thing the mysterious “glasses” frame may have been indeed used to sedate, as the Professor knows the 1800’s were a time when gases such as n2o where being explored, and where used in the medical field. In some places n2o is still used by dentists
