The way I understand was he knew he didn't offer God the best of his blessings. He wanted it for himself. Where Abel gave his best lamb goat other things the best of his harvest. We never know exactly wat the gifts where but God knew Cain held back his best he knows wat blessings he sent him? Won't? He? At least I take it that way.:)
