New York is not short of sporting events to attend. The choice across basketball, baseball, hockey, NFL and soccer can be overwhelming and that's not even mentioning annual events such as the US Open and New York Marathon.
But one sporting event which has to be experienced for any football lover is the derby fixture between New York Red Bulls and New York City FC in the MLS.
This is a soccer rivalry that began when New York City FC joined the MLS in 2013, and the tension between the two clubs has grown ever since. New Jersey based Red Bulls have the history within the league, whilst NYC FC are the new kids on the block looking to dominate soccer in the city. When the two clubs come together, it is a great way to experience a lively, passionate atmosphere full of noise, parties and action on the pitch.
Whether you are going to a New York soccer derby, or any other game at the Red Bull Arena, there are a few things you should know before attending including how to get to the stadium and how to join in with the pre-match tailgate party.
How to get to Red Bull Arena:
Take a PATH train towards New Jersey from either 33rd Street or the World Trade Centre stations.
Take a train towards Harrison. A simple Metro pass will give you access through the gates. The journey will take around 20 minutes.
Get off the train at Harrison, and once out the station, take a left under the bridge where you will see the parking lots surrounding the Red Bull Arena.
As you walk towards the stadium, in the couple of hours leading up to kick-off you will come across tailgate parties happening all over.
Anyone is welcome to join in, even those from opposing teams. You can take your own drinks and get chatting to fans who are all welcoming.
Once ready, walk over to the stadium to the gate required for your ticket.

i am russian american and grew up with ice hockey and football in the summer so living in Nj it is amazing to have both my favorite sports right near me i have Nj devils season passes and i am going to my first Red Bull match on July 8th i have seen football in russia but never got to see it in the USA yet

This video was once again, the State of New Jersey gets screwed again. Why? Tries to ignore the fact that the stadium is physically located in Harrison, New Jersey, and is constantly playing second fiddle to New York. There was nothing good to talk about New Jersey, either. All comes down to geography.
Never my intention to ignore New Jersey - in fact I made the point of letting people know how to get to Harrison from New York.
