The full blender blends in either the bridge PU or the neck PU depending on what side of the 5 way your on. I believe the half blender just blends the bridge in only. The half seems better for performing live and the full is better in the studio where you can dial in specific tones. The first tone knob works for all three PU’s.
I'm in the process of customizing an Epiphone SG that I've had sitting around for years with no pickups in it. (I'm gonna do the Steve Vai Jem swirl. ) I think I know the answer already, but... Do you happen to know if a full blender would work on a two humbucker instrument?
on a full blender mod can you still get your single coil pickup sound with the bridge by itself and also the neck by itself or do you lose that functionality by making a full blender mod
Lol. I was just watching a video on the tone of a blend circuit on a tele and was thinking, "I would love to have one of these on a strat." I've always hated the way the Tele looks. This video confirms to me that, if you think you've had a clever idea, someone's already beat you to it.
So strange, I remember buying my first electric and being torn between the Strat and Tele… Tele won out for time and feel but I remember being hesitant with the look. I’ve never looked back and now like the look of the Tele much more!
@@waynegram8907 it rolls off fewer highs. I can go all the way to zero on my tone pot. and it still has most of the mid range and a little bit of the highs left… It actually puts a little bit of a resonant peak where the rolloff point is so you don’t just get a darker tone, it actually has more mid bite depending on how much you rolloff
@@haskitt Yes I have heard Tony Iommi used a 0.0033uf tone cap for his SG to get that hooky resonant peak for the early Black Sabbath albums. Look it up to see if this is true or not.
How would you describe the effect of using the 1/2 blender vs having the second tone be applied to Bridge pup? Seems like either of these are essentially in some way about taming the bridge tone. Appreciate any thoughts on the value of one vs the other.
The blender is more of a scoop/twang thing… it tames the mids a bit because of the scoop that occurs when blending Neck/Bridge but the highs stay in the game. On a tone Pot you decrease highs and mids.
The pace of the video is good. You just need to pause at the text and make sure you understand the configuration first, then listen. Only thing that seems a little confusing is with the with Blender @ 10, there's no blend .... AND with the Blender @ 0, it's full blend. Seems counterintuitive. Might be better to just say, here's with no blend, 50% blend, 100% blend ... just my two cents.
The steel baseplate under the bridge pick-up à la Telecaster is not a detail ! It must be the most effective/cheap modification to do for a rounder, more balanced tone on a Strat like bridge PU. Should be in the title IMO.
So if I can shape a piece of steel for the bridge pickup on a Stratocaster and make the pickup sit just like the Telecaster Bridge I could get a fuller tone? In any case it's worth trying, thanks for reminding me. The most obvious and effective modifications are always the basic and simple ones. Thanks again.
I'm interested in the half blender mod as I would like to keep things as simple as possible. Would the mod work with a 4 pole, 5 way superswitch?
Fantastic video! Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love the lollar tweeds. Currently stuck deciding between those and Fralin real 54s for my strat
The quarter blend, bridge pickup only, is the best in my opinion. You need a 5 way 2-pole switch but it's worth the time to do.
Neck+bridge on a Strat is super cool!

I’m sure you could wire one up… I’d have to do a lot of poking around to figure it out though, good luck!
Yes, agreed
Good stuff man! Super helpful.

You still have Neck by itself and Bridge by itself with the full blender mod, when the blender pot is at 10.
@@haskitt so what's the difference between half blender and full blender when I listen to the sound the half blender sounds better why is that

SCOTT HASKITT< What do you mean by Hot Rod mod for the tone pot? using a 4200pf cap instead of the stock 0.033uF or 0.047uf?
Close! I did 3300pf for these pickups, worked great.
@@haskitt using a 0.0033uf or 3300pf does what to the tone?

Great demo, thanks. Slightly too fast paced on the tone demos, by the time I'd read the text it was into the next tone. Difficult to keep up.
Good feedback... I actually tried to make it more fast paced than I usually go to see if it would be helpful. Noted!
