- We learned how to garden by volunteering at organic farms. When we started our own garden, we followed what we learned.
Grow a ton of different varieties of veggies that will be ready throughout the season.
We realized pretty quickly that while this is a great strategy if you are going to market, but as home gardeners we were left burnt out and with way more food than we knew what to do with.
Then we read Carol Deppe’s book “The Resilient Gardener” and changed everything.
We changed our strategy and in the same amount of space are able to grow way more food that feeds our family year round with way less work required!

What would you recommend to plant next to zucchini and squash? I tried to grow them and every year they would be destroyed by the squash bugs.
@@sunitamay123 Hey there! Good question. Maybe it's worth trying something like onions or leeks. We've never had anything touch those and maybe they'd help keep pests away. We've had good luck growing corn and beans alongside them too. Good luck to you!
WOW! I haven’t seen this before! Pulling the chicken tractors along through wide living pathways! Super creative system!
That’s so awesome !!!
1/4 acre? looks like so much more. great job.
Thanks! :)
I want to like this twice. I can’t wait to have my opportunity to have my little 1/4 acre piece of the dream! Hopefully a little more for some forest, too.
I love this! I live on .69 of an acre and have a dozen chickens. I really should try to build a chicken tractor. I just have them free range in the morning when I'm enjoying my tea and murder mysteries book in the morning.
Sounds lovely!
Super ❤. I have 35 quails and many vegetables in my small backyard. I need to get an acre next time.
Love that!
That's amazing! Can't wait to see how well we do this year!
Yea! Hope it's a great year for you!
Hermoso!!!!
Gracias! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing great idea! 👍
Honey bees don’t actually pollinate as well as you may think.
More honey actually means less pollination happening because pollen is a key ingredient to the production of honey. They also out-compete other species who pollinate better.
Supporting other bee and insect species is key if you want to maximize your pollination benefits :)
Your editing was just about a half a second off from perfection... if only you had "just to BEE the man'" playing over the clip of the honey flowing 🤣
Ah! Just missed it! :)
Bruh, this just fucked me up. Im so doing this on my pathways 😂
Thanks for watching!

Very nice! Do you guys have any issues with the gras trying to reinvade your rows? How did yall break the ground in?
Hi! Yes, the grass and weeds can be a constant struggle. We've found if we plant a bit later and can get all the weeds out first, we have less problems with them. We tilled it initially and use a tiller or broadfork.
my dream
What grow zone do you live in? Looks like maybe a 4 or 5? I’ve only recently learned about those and am trying to figure out what I can grow here on my balcony. I’d love to have my own land one day.
We're in zone 5. Only some of these could be practical on a balcony, but this post share more of the specifics on our favorites to grow. fromscratchfarmstead.com/10-essential-storage-crops-you-need-to-grow/. Good luck in the journey and thanks for watching!

How did you start?
Hey! This post goes more into detail of the steps we took to create this area: //fromscratchfarmstead.com/how-to-create-a-quarter-acre-self-sufficient-homestead-garden/. Thanks for watching!
But my damn HOA said I have to have a "pretty lawn"😢
Ugh!!
HOA needs to be illegal. All these agencies and governments are trying to control, trap, and starve people. Freedom is gone in most of the U.S.
I have always wondered about how long does it take just to grow a few potatoes and after you harvest them how long do they last without going bad because when you plant them again you have to wait months before you can harvest more.. do you plant some then wait a bit and then plant more to keep the constant flow of food coming in?
Great questions! We only do one planting of potatoes in the spring... end of May or early June. After about 3 months you can start harvesting them for fresh eating. We do a bit of that, but we wait until October to harvest most of them. Those later harvested potatoes store best for long term storage. Those stored potatoes give us potatoes to eat all winter long and we typically still have some left all the way up until we are eating next years crop--though they're a bit soft by that point, but still very edible. You can definitely do multiple plantings too, we just prefer to do it all at once. Thanks for watching!
@@FromScratchFarmstead wow that is amazing how people could be independent and live off of what they grow and not spend as much as you would buying a 10 Lbs bag of potatoes at a grocery store over priced .. Fried potatoes are my favorite. Thanks again
Why is there no weeding required? Nice vid.
Thanks! The way the squash/potatoes act as a ground cover, the weeds are usually super minimal. We usually try to do a bit at the beginning but then just let them go wild.
That looks bigger than a quarter acre to me. Great ideas though.
It's just a long and thin rectangular 1/4 acre! Thanks :)
1/4 of an acre? that looks like 300 acres
Just a 1/4 acre, but a long rectangle :). Thanks for watching!
@@FromScratchFarmstead Congratulations. I wish you great success.
