Thanks for this tute Mr Mansell/Scott. Now I see with my exit understeer I just gotta be more patient and more consistent to within a few tenths per lap before doing anything to the car set up. At my last track day there was a guy in a RS Clio who was the absolute king of understeer. This guy was just throwing steering lock at it on every corner, and then adding power. The car just wasn't turning or going forward, and I was pootling around behind him using about 50% of the grip available. Made me angry just watching him drive, I can't imagine how frustrated he was!

Great Insight and information. However, I was keen to understand more as to how to actually overcome understeer in 4 stroke rental karts where moving the seat position is not possible.
Rachit Singhal the rental karts only have rear brakes and a solid chassis with very little weight transfer. In this case you only really have your steering input as a way of controlling understeer.

Extra tip: on soft suspension, jab on the brakes quickly and sharply then when you lift off and the nose is still diving, turn in with no brakes for maximum utilisation of grip to turning. If rotation is still too low, jab at the accelerator while the nose is down to spin up the rear tyres while the grip is reduced (countersteer as necessary).
I'm not sure if this is another way to fix understeer. I am going on the same speed on the turn but i lose a lot of the under steer when I lower the gear and press the gas to correct it by using the back of the car (rear wheel drive) to correct it.
Because it is not the first time I watch I started paying attention to car drawn and came to conclusion that car is cheatting, look at the way he completely bends to fit the corner perfectly, completely against regulations... Lol... Happy new year my friends...
I suppose you are talking about applying both the throttle and the brakes at the same time (as often seen in rallying). The problem is that this reduces understeer, or even induces oversteer in FWD and some AWD vehicles, it will usually induce more understeer in a RWD vehicle. Being as most track cars are RWD, this technique might not be ideal. There is one other point to consider however. Using both throttle and brakes at the same time can reduce or eliminate turbo lag, so that is one advantage. As of left foot braking without using the throttle simultaneously, there is no difference between right foot braking, except for the fact that there is less transition time between acceleration and braking. This is however irrelevant when discussing under- or oversteer.
@@basmeijs6973 : I mostly agree with you here.. But what I'm really talking about is reducing understeer in FWD and AWD cars.. Because you can steer the RWD car with throttle so it's not very necessary to focus too much on understeer in RWD cars.. That's why most race drivers prefer rwd cars because they can exit most aggressively without worrying about understeer.. On the other hand, In FWD cars if you exit early and aggressively then front wheels will loose traction in most cases.. It's very frustrating in a race because you can't corner aggressively aspecially in medium and high speed corners.. So the trick in FWD cars is to balance the throttle and brake with left and right foot. What i mean is after putting the car in right gear before entering the corner you can gamble to come on throttle early but at the same time putting enough weight on the front tyres with your left foot and force your car to follow the right line.. It's a very useful trick on tight tracks and roads where racing line can't help much..
@@Abhishek-150you've got a good point. Especially considering FWD cars. Even more so when they are not properly balanced or you are riding in the wet (or on gravel). There is however one small thing I'd like to add about RWD cars. They can understeer quite severely on corner exit. Especially with mid- or rear-engined layouts, but some front engined cars also have this problem. The weight transfer of acceleration will take weight off the front wheels, thus reducing traction. (Especially in a MR/RR lay-out, where there is little weight on the front to begin with). The result of this weight transfer can be quite severe understeer on corner exit. This is off course also affected by the setup of the suspension of the car.
@@basmeijs6973: Yes, Aspecially mid engined RWD cars.. They tends to understeer at initial corner entry. Even FR layout understeers at initial entry but correct it's line afterwards and exit very furiously.. That's why RWD cars have different lines as compared to FWD.. The rearward weight bias preferred by sports and racing cars results from handling effects during the transition from straight-ahead to cornering. During corner entry the front tires, in addition to generating part of the lateral force required to accelerate the car's center of mass into the turn, also generate a torque about the car's vertical axis that starts the car rotating into the turn. However, the lateral force being generated by the rear tires is acting in the opposite torsional sense, trying to rotate the car out of the turn. For this reason, a car with "50/50" weight distribution aspecially Mid engine car understeers on initial corner entry. To avoid this problem, sports and racing cars often have a more rearward weight distribution. In the case of pure racing cars, this is typically between "40/60" and "35/65". This gives the front tires an advantage in overcoming the car's moment of inertia (yaw angular inertia), thus reducing corner-entry understeer.

I still remember quite a few years ago when I was at spa, watching the GT racing, and being intrigued by how the top two cars could be so different, yet get so similar results. Those were the light, not very powerful, MR layout 911's, Vs the heavy, very powerful, FR driven AMG-GT's. Fascinating to watch.
I have the same question. I think it's safe to say the science behind why a fwd car would understeer is the same as any car. Too much speed, tires at maximum grip etc but I think what to do to correct it may be slightly different. I truly have no clue and is what I'm trying to learn about.
I hate understeer midcorner in a high speed sweeper. It's so difficult to deal with this type of understeer because my car likes to snap oversteer out of such understeer. I've tried the gas modulation technique and I just don't have a good enough right foot, and it will either continue to understeer or will lift off oversteer. The only way I've learnt to deal with it is to use left-foot braking as soon as I feel understeer coming on (while steadying my right foot on the gas). Maybe I just need a less loose setup? Maybe just a bit more rear toe in.

Poor ol' maligned UNDERSTEER....mastery of "intentional" understeer is a component of some of the most heroic moves that can be performed in a motor car, i.e. the magnificent 4 wheel slide!, as well as for extending the drift in a non-zero Ackerman front geometry(normal car) vehicle. Otherwise, spinning is a more fun way to abandon all car control, lololol. ..btw nice tutorial. btw, adding a brush of LFB while maintaining speed and revs by matting the accelerator could be a technique to address understeer from apex to track out, maybe.....

At my last track day there was a guy in a RS Clio who was the absolute king of understeer. This guy was just throwing steering lock at it on every corner, and then adding power. The car just wasn't turning or going forward, and I was pootling around behind him using about 50% of the grip available. Made me angry just watching him drive, I can't imagine how frustrated he was!

Great Insight and information. However, I was keen to understand more as to how to actually overcome understeer in 4 stroke rental karts where moving the seat position is not possible.
Rachit Singhal the rental karts only have rear brakes and a solid chassis with very little weight transfer. In this case you only really have your steering input as a way of controlling understeer.

I'm am proud to say that as an American I have never refered to understeer as "push"

@@takl23 This is correct, I race on ovals in the UK and we call it push, or say the car is tight for understeer. And "arsey" or loose for oversteer.
Extra tip: on soft suspension, jab on the brakes quickly and sharply then when you lift off and the nose is still diving, turn in with no brakes for maximum utilisation of grip to turning. If rotation is still too low, jab at the accelerator while the nose is down to spin up the rear tyres while the grip is reduced (countersteer as necessary).

I'm not sure if this is another way to fix understeer. I am going on the same speed on the turn but i lose a lot of the under steer when I lower the gear and press the gas to correct it by using the back of the car (rear wheel drive) to correct it.

Brake with your left foot to eliminate understeer without compromising with speed..
I suppose you are talking about applying both the throttle and the brakes at the same time (as often seen in rallying). The problem is that this reduces understeer, or even induces oversteer in FWD and some AWD vehicles, it will usually induce more understeer in a RWD vehicle. Being as most track cars are RWD, this technique might not be ideal.
There is one other point to consider however. Using both throttle and brakes at the same time can reduce or eliminate turbo lag, so that is one advantage.
As of left foot braking without using the throttle simultaneously, there is no difference between right foot braking, except for the fact that there is less transition time between acceleration and braking. This is however irrelevant when discussing under- or oversteer.
@@basmeijs6973 : I mostly agree with you here.. But what I'm really talking about is reducing understeer in FWD and AWD cars.. Because you can steer the RWD car with throttle so it's not very necessary to focus too much on understeer in RWD cars.. That's why most race drivers prefer rwd cars because they can exit most aggressively without worrying about understeer..
On the other hand, In FWD cars if you exit early and aggressively then front wheels will loose traction in most cases.. It's very frustrating in a race because you can't corner aggressively aspecially in medium and high speed corners.. So the trick in FWD cars is to balance the throttle and brake with left and right foot. What i mean is after putting the car in right gear before entering the corner you can gamble to come on throttle early but at the same time putting enough weight on the front tyres with your left foot and force your car to follow the right line.. It's a very useful trick on tight tracks and roads where racing line can't help much..
@@Abhishek-150you've got a good point. Especially considering FWD cars. Even more so when they are not properly balanced or you are riding in the wet (or on gravel).
There is however one small thing I'd like to add about RWD cars. They can understeer quite severely on corner exit. Especially with mid- or rear-engined layouts, but some front engined cars also have this problem. The weight transfer of acceleration will take weight off the front wheels, thus reducing traction. (Especially in a MR/RR lay-out, where there is little weight on the front to begin with).
The result of this weight transfer can be quite severe understeer on corner exit.
This is off course also affected by the setup of the suspension of the car.
@@basmeijs6973: Yes, Aspecially mid engined RWD cars.. They tends to understeer at initial corner entry. Even FR layout understeers at initial entry but correct it's line afterwards and exit very furiously.. That's why RWD cars have different lines as compared to FWD..
The rearward weight bias preferred by sports and racing cars results from handling effects during the transition from straight-ahead to cornering. During corner entry the front tires, in addition to generating part of the lateral force required to accelerate the car's center of mass into the turn, also generate a torque about the car's vertical axis that starts the car rotating into the turn. However, the lateral force being generated by the rear tires is acting in the opposite torsional sense, trying to rotate the car out of the turn. For this reason, a car with "50/50" weight distribution aspecially Mid engine car
understeers on initial corner entry. To avoid this problem, sports and racing cars often have a more rearward weight distribution. In the case of pure racing cars, this is typically between "40/60" and "35/65". This gives the front tires an advantage in overcoming the car's moment of inertia (yaw angular inertia), thus reducing corner-entry understeer.

I have the same question. I think it's safe to say the science behind why a fwd car would understeer is the same as any car. Too much speed, tires at maximum grip etc but I think what to do to correct it may be slightly different. I truly have no clue and is what I'm trying to learn about.

I hate understeer midcorner in a high speed sweeper. It's so difficult to deal with this type of understeer because my car likes to snap oversteer out of such understeer.
I've tried the gas modulation technique and I just don't have a good enough right foot, and it will either continue to understeer or will lift off oversteer.
The only way I've learnt to deal with it is to use left-foot braking as soon as I feel understeer coming on (while steadying my right foot on the gas).
Maybe I just need a less loose setup? Maybe just a bit more rear toe in.

Jesus is the Son of God, who came to the world as a man. He lived a perfect and sinless life . Even though He was perfect and sinless, on the cross of Calvary God wrathfully punished Him for the sins of the world. 3 days later He rose from death. Now He is seated at the right hand of God, ruling as King over Heaven and Earth.
On the judgment day He will judge you, me and every human being that has ever lived. Those who believed in Him will enter eternal joy with Him, but those who did not believe in Jesus will be sent to eternal condemnation.
So turn from your sins and believe in the Jesus. Believe and hope that you can be forgiven for all your sins because of His death and resurrection. He took your place in Hell, so that if you submit to Him as your Lord and God, you can be forgiven and take His place in heaven- you will be made sinnless and perfect before the Holy Father. He'll also give you a new heart and mind that can love and obey Him.
Jesus lives so that you can have true life and freedom, and most importantly so that you can have an eternally peaceful relationship with God.
You are dead, and Jesus is your Hope of love.

Our team is trio. I, the driving talent, me, the pit crew, and myself, the race engineer. Our usual problem is only one shows up at any moment.
Poor ol' maligned UNDERSTEER....mastery of "intentional" understeer is a component of some of the most heroic moves that can be performed in a motor car, i.e. the magnificent 4 wheel slide!, as well as for extending the drift in a non-zero Ackerman front geometry(normal car) vehicle. Otherwise, spinning is a more fun way to abandon all car control, lololol.
..btw nice tutorial. btw, adding a brush of LFB while maintaining speed and revs by matting the accelerator could be a technique to address understeer from apex to track out, maybe.....
Thats all good but too much front grip will cause some understeer

I have played enough rally games to know the best way to prevent understeer is with a Scandinavian flick and and a quick yank on the handbrake.
Flick and Handbrake?
Exactly.
The Scandy Flick is great for rallying but on a circuit your corner exit speeds would be to slow for a quick lap time.

Understeer is not a smooth operation
Its not rocket science look into the furute .
This is what caused Hamilton to crash into Max
