      We need a full video of just Linus or Luke doing a watercooled build without any script and just cameras following what he does. It would really help first time water-coolers IMO.

      You may think it contradicts rach other but that is not the Case. Today he has Sponsors who gave him fancy RGB LED Memory and those SLI or Crossfired Gamingcards so he stil don't spend Money on RGB Ram. Instead he pays fpr it with being an Influencer which is really Time consuming.
      What would You do if someone throws RGBLED Ram at You.

    • @TheSnaveeelPlaysGames
      @TheSnaveeelPlaysGames 8 років тому +15

      It was Linus, he use to call his camera man just camera man at ncix because he didn't want people knowing his name and the audience liked it so Linus wanted to keep the nicknames going (,Luke being called slick because of his oil cooled PC) but when things like that are forced it doesn't tend to work so he gave up on the idea.

      Well you could use industrial strength double sided tape, or even the tool-less stuff most cases come with now will work, and I prefer those cases. Of course, my current case isn't tool-less, but since the thing is huge and will last me for years to come and will fit whatever I want to put in it (its the HAF Stacker), I don't mind it being tool'less so much.

    Linus I loved the video, thank you for letting us watch how you dealt with the problems. I also just loved the little things like you keeping the video while it was booting up and you going into the bios/OS. A lot of build videos have those parts edited out which I hate because that is a huge part of everyone's build process.

    A great way to know that your holes are where they should be is use a piece of paper as a stencil for the holes on whatever you need to drill with pretty much complete accuracy.

    Gah, tiny CPU cooler releasing heat from an extreme processor, outputting heat vertically straight into the PSU fan... Linus why didn't you see this???

    • @andresalles6627
      @andresalles6627 11 років тому +9

      outputting heat into psu doesnt matter if the psu if good , 5 years ago or more yeah but todays psu are so well built that it doesnt matter , also theres the case size , cant fit a silverarrow in there so use your head a bit and he said hes gonna replace that heatsink in the component list on the description ( read ) there are some very good small cpu coolers , also hes using a good thermal paste and hes not overclocking

    • @radekmlynek919
      @radekmlynek919 11 років тому +3

      If you actually look at the cpu cooler, the fan blows air onto the motherboard so some of the air is gonna go out the back and not through the PSU. I am talking about the little non-stock cooler. Your probably talking about the stock Intel cooler,

    • @mathiassrensen4764

    Honestly, not to hate on Linus, but I don't think a lot of people need anti static devices.
    I built my first PC 2 weeks ago, and not a single problem, after giving the mobo a literal hand job. Granted I live in New Orleans where it's constantly humid this time of year, so that may be a factor.

    • @amazingRAGE1
      @amazingRAGE1 9 років тому +3

      Depends a lot on the parts I guess. My first motherboard blew out because of the lack of static protection worn by my build partner

    • @Ozziepeck11
      @Ozziepeck11 9 років тому

    • @amazingRAGE1
      @amazingRAGE1 9 років тому +1

      Ozzie Peck it was a Gigabyte actually. First thing I checked was the caps. After searching online I discovered that the board was ridiculously prone to static. I confirmed this when my second board blew out. I actually switched to an Msi board, thanks for the tip on the caps.

      @LazyFaux5656 9 років тому

    14:53 Linus, just because you don't need it, doesn't mean that it makes no sense for anyone else.
    It's useful:
    *-* for people building a custom case from the ground up.
    *-* for upgrading stupid old cases, where the front i/o is on the very bottom and you have to bow down, to connect something (really bad for old people). Bottom side i/o is even worse, since it may be unaccessible, due to facing a wall (saw that too).
    *-* for legitimate replacement of broken front audio ports. How the funk may one even accomplish breaking that, you may ask. Well, I'll tell you. Once, I was assembling a system, while being very tired. So basically I was on autopilot, doing things without thinking, obviously. And I've plugged a usb connector into a 1394 header. That did not destroy the front usb ports, but it led to the cables of the front audio ports completely melting. Regrettably, I've only noticed it when it was too late already. Black smoke was coming from the system and it smelled terribly. Luckily, everything else still seemed fine.

    • @risrelchy
      @risrelchy 10 років тому +6

      The audio ports are already behind the IO shield, and most motherboards don't have 2 different sets of audio port hookups, so their inclusion is obsolete.

      Hey Fez that sounds familiar, hahaha get it?

    • @NafanyaZX
      @NafanyaZX 10 років тому

      Fez Honestly, can't you read? You're not supposed to hook up the original front audio and the added front audio at the same time! You are meant to replace the the terribly placed (bottom) front audio ports in old cases, with the new panel on top, for easy accessibility. Which brings me to the rear audio ports. That is not a suitable replacement for front audio, because it's not easily accessible. In most cases, one would have to get down on all fours and crawl under the table. That's bullshit, any older person wil tell you that.

      from my limited knowledge on diff. card solutions, I believe one card can be set to do certain tasks, such as having the editing card working on the editing software and the other card just does basic stuff such as display stuff (I think) and the other way around if your gaming. Again, this is off something I heard like 5 months ago in another video.

    This may be a little bit late and I'm sure someone noted that already but when you turned over the CPU Cooler you accidently changed the direction of the airflow resulting in sucking air away from the heatsink than blowing on it thus cooling it. At 47:02 you can see that the slight convex bending in the fan blades is oriented upwards indicating the airflow on that fan. No wonder why the CPU was so hot idleing in the BIOS :D

  • @jdsgotninelives
    @jdsgotninelives 11 років тому +1

    very unique and on the whole successful. I think you are going to have to put the cooling through a cut out in the top chassis. Don't know how significant the power supply is going to be to that arrangement though. Would love it if you posted an update or link to an update as I'm genuinely intrigued. I also think cooling coming out of the case is similar to a high performance carb setup poking out the top of a sreet machine. Just sayin' :-)

    >use a crappy built-in card reader

    • @nfaguade
      @nfaguade 9 років тому

      ***** Well, from my own experience, any internal reader gives you slooooowww speeds. Once I bought proper lexar readers I never went back to anything else. Considering their build and the work they do, I'd have expected them to use something like the HR1.

    • @nfaguade
      @nfaguade 9 років тому

      ***** Well, with crappy readers I can get around 10MB/s... with better ones, depends on the card, connection and HDDs, but let's say with my CFR1, which uses usb 3.0 and a fast (but not among the fastests) I can get from 40 to 60.
      If you have to transfer thousands of photos, that difference matters. Maybe they just let the videos copy in the background while they edit stuff, so pure speed isn't a problem.

    • @jordanzish
      @jordanzish 9 років тому

      nfaguade Interesting, I would've assumed it'd be faster connected directly to the mobo than through USB. Never tested it though; I don't really use card readers much.

    • @DickCheese182
      @DickCheese182 9 років тому

      nfaguade Something that uses a USB 3.0 header is obviously going to be faster, thats just beyond obvious.

    • @nfaguade
      @nfaguade 9 років тому

      BananaMasterRace Does he mention which header it is using? because as far as I remember, he doesn't and the headers you see wiggling around look like usb 2 headers.
      Also, assuming both your dedicated card reader and the built-in use usb 3, if the built-in is crappy (as they usually are) the dedicated will be faster.

Lol I love your videos Linus, never stop making them, please.

    • @rctsquared
      @rctsquared 10 років тому +5

      The card's meant to be overclocked, so it needs the extra juice. Reference 780's take 1-8pin and 1-6 pin.

    • @rctsquared
      @rctsquared 10 років тому +3

      Nightreaper Anon Too bad tdp doesn't equal power consumption, tdp measures the amount of heat that the cooler of the card needs to dissipate measured in watts.

    • @rctsquared
      @rctsquared 10 років тому

      Nightreaper Anon Not denying that at all, considering I'm running an i5 with a reference 780 with a 500w perfectly fine, 8-pins can only deliver 150w and 6-pins about 75w

    Linus, the BIOS uses a sensor near the CPU socket to display the CPU temp. It doesn't read off of the CPU cores like Real Temp or any other core temperature program. Also, the CPU doesn't throttle down when it's in the BIOS.

    You don't need SLI. It's because he uses the Quadro just for the monitoroutput. The GTX 780 for the calculations (You can set whatever graphicscard will be used while rendering and stuff). When you give different graphicscard a different task, SLI is not needed. Only for combine the power together, SLI is needed.

  • @EdzelYago

    It doesn't but Resolve relies on GPU acceleration. With the quadro on GUI and the 780 on processing, you get 10-bit colour and great CUDA power.

    when you are booted in the OS the OS tells the CPU to use it's power saving features like EIST, c-states and stuff. While in non OS environment like the BIOS your CPU runs at the speed it is rated for i.e. 3.3GHz with full voltage and thus heat is generated. You can also observe this in the power draw with your Kill' a ' Watt. The tiny heatsink was a bad idea anyhow for a 130w TDP
