  • Alessandro Besozzi - Allegro from "Duo for Oboe and Bassoon"
    Marco Cera Baroque oboe
    Dominic Teresi Baroque Bassoon
On Friday July the 13th 1770, the British music historian Charles Burney payed a visit to Alessandro Besozzi and his brother Paolo Girolamo Besozzi, in their house in Turin.
Here is how Burney describes the Besozzi brothers on his book “The Present State of Music in France and Italy” : imslp.org/wiki...)
"This morning I visited the two Signor Besozzis, whose talents are well known to all travellers of taste in music. They are brothers: the eldest seventy, end the youngest towards of sixty . (…..) The eldest plays the hautboys, and the youngest the bassoon, which instrument continues the scale of the hautboys, and is its true base. (…..) The compositions of these excellent musicians generally consist on select and detached passages, yet so elaborately finished, that, like select thoughts or maxims in literature, each is not a fragment but a whole: these pieces are in a peculiar manner adapted to display the powers of the performers: but it is difficult to describe their style of playing. (…..)
So much expression! Such delicacy! Such a perfect acquiescence and agreement together, that many of the passages seem heart-felt sighs, breathed through the same reed. No brilliancy of execution is aimed at, all are notes of meaning. The imitations are exact, the melody is pretty equally distributed between the two instruments; each forte, piano, crescendo, diminuendo and appoggiatura is observed with a minute exactness, which could be attained only by such a long residence and study together.
The eldest brother has lost his under front teeth, and complained of age; and it is natural to suppose that the performance of each one has been better; however, to me, who heard them now for the first time, it was charming."

Sweet!
