  • Welcome to what you need before you read, the series where I attempt to inoculate you from boredom by injecting a little context and relevancy into you reading experience. This video will provide background information, context, and helpful advice before you undertake your reading or rehearsing. For our third episode, we’re looking at William Shakespeare’s Love's Labor's Lost. Wow that's a lot of possessive nouns.

It seems that the phrase "Intellect, seeking wisdom, cheats eyesight out of daylight;" is one of the most relevant lines of the play for us today. In a time where we can access information about anything instantly and impersonally, there is bigger potential for misunderstandings than ever before. There are so many nuances that can be lost through that convenience. As much as it pains me as an author to say it: There are experiences that cannot be fully expressed through writing or any other kind of art. You just have to be there and do them.
Another danger with easy "learning" was pointed out by John Green in one of the last videos he did on Crash Course U.S.A. history. The internet, while allowing us to socialize and rally around causes as never before, also allows us to isolate ourselves from alternative perspectives as never before, blocking and cyberbullying "dissidents."
Progress can be a double-edged sword.

Cool video! Yeah, humor doesn't usually translate over big time scales. I agree that it's interesting to watch a performance where the actors get the joke in the text and can give it a chance to be funny. Interesting analysis 👍
