Russia had built defenses, but when they invaded Poland they started moving the defenses in to Poland and they were not completed when the Germans invaded.
there are two sides of the coin ... After Germany made a "reunification" with Austria, Warsaw approved this event, Berlin supported Poland's claims to Vilna and Vilnius region, in exchange for the recognition of German rights to Klaipeda, Berlin and Warsaw continued their "fruitful" »Cooperation - in aggression against Czechoslovakia, its dismemberment
Russians have had already developed "russian Blitzkrieg" strategy called "Deep operation", which was basically developed in early 1920s, and was later used as a "WW1" strategy against Blitzkrieg operations. PS I see you have mentioned that, i really like your Channel! You are indeed working hard. I've subscribed to your channel
The initial trouble with Russia was the purging by Stalin of the military class in the 20s and 30s, With the invasion of Russia by the Germans the Russian army failed so badly because they would not make decisions due to the fact they could be purged for it if they made mistakes. It was Siberian reserves that saved Moscow and bad decisions by the Germans too, but the the Russians finally got going boy did they fight!!!

I'll correct your video thesis. If you are interested, I will give you a more complete picture. 1. the Purges of 1937-1938 did not have a strong impact on the red army officer corps. 2. The line of fortifications on the old border had not been dismantled, and only canned. 3. Tukhachevsky and his team were shot for preparing a military coup. 4. Tukhachevsky did not create the "theory of deep operation", it was created by Triandafilov. 5. 4 tank corps were disbanded in the winter of 39-40, and in the spring motorized divisions (1 tank regiment and 2 motorized rifle regiments) or (3 motorized rifle regiments of 2 motorized battalions and 1 tank battalion) were to be formed. The decision was made following the results of the war in Spain and the Liberation Campaign in September 1939, but the 1st tank corps took part in the Winter war. As a result of the Winter war, the previously approved decision was confirmed. 6. The strength of the red army increased from 1935 to 1941 5 times. 7. There were constant reforms in the red army aimed at increasing the fire of divisions. 8. The main direction was selected in the South: the terrain is suitable for tanks; - the economic feasibility. The number in Ukraine is 1.3 times higher than in Belarus ( 33.9% of troops against 25.8%, 40% of tank troops against 30%, 700 thousand against 1 million).9. the main reasons for the defeat in the summer of 1941 - low troop density, non-mobilisation of troops, treachery or negligence of individual generals
Regarding Stalin's animosity towards Tukhachevsky and other officers, the contributing factor was probably also the fact that Stalin (together with Budyonny) was being accused of being partially responsible for the Bolshevik defeat in Poland in 1920, due to their lack of cooperation/insubordination towards Tukhachevsky. Great video BTW!
You're wrong. tukhachevsky commanded the western front, and the southwestern front was commanded by yegorov, whose commissar was stalin. And Stalin crossed Yegorov out of the arrest lists 3 times, but did not cross him out the fourth time
This might be out of topic , but I think you should make video how Soviet mostly (Latvian and Estonian) family's fought on both sides. For example my relative was part of 19th SS division while his brother was in red army.

I think the Soviet Union was preparing its own invasion of Europe before Hitler invaded Russia, someone was going to break the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact anyway. A massive miscalculation by Hitler anyway, but its still ironic that the UK only declared war on Germany due to the secret protocol that if Germany and the Soviet union invaded Poland only Germany was to be held responsible, Russia even invaded Finland and annexed the Baltic states and 'nothing' from the Allies and UK.
There is only one historian who claims Stalin wanted to invade Germany: Suvorov. His claims are dismissed by most historians. Why Britain didn't declare war on the USSR in 1939 is something you can find the answer to on YT. There are different videos on that.
So it was the USSR that annexed Austria, enslaved France, Czechoslovakia, with the approval of England and Poland. Did the USSR also carry out the Munich conspiracy?...
Check out young Stalin at 6:39 and his famous, mustash . His behavior stands out that he is the Alpha man showing control over every one around him very animated and energetic. He stands out from every one else and is already the boss
Frankly, I believe that it is enough to actually read R-M Pact secret protocol to realize that USSR WAS in fact preparing for offensive war. Original agreement (as opposed to real one, being an effect of September Campaign in Poland) granted USSR whole eastern Poland up to Vistula river (sic!) but crucially Lithuania was meant to be in German sphere (!!!). That would place Wehrmacht forces few hundreds kilometres CLOSER to Moscow and Leningrad, with comfortable starting point to pass by Belorussian woods and marshes. On the other hand 'Polish' part of USSR gains would be completely undefendable. Whole original setup had any sense from USSR point of view only in one case I believe - if USSR wanted to use eastern Poland not as buffer for defense, but springboard for an attack. Secondly, what is missing from the equation in your video is the fact that based on R-M pact, Soviets signed multiple economic agreements with Nazi Germany, providing it (up to June 1941 basically) with enormous amounts of strategic materials (mostly oil and grain, but also many others). Today historians had no doubts that only this supply allowed Hitler to continue war in 1940, so USSR was effectively sponsoring Hitler's victories in Norway, Low Countries, France, Balkans and ironically - also early Barbarossa. But Stalin was playing on long, bloody stalemate on the West, based on France + UK potential. That would grant him time to organize an attack. Thirdly, there is no evidence about serious preparations for serious defense on the USSR side. Most units was positioned absurdly close to the border with Germany (and there was a plenty evidence form Poland and France hob bad that idea can be in the case of defense against Germans), including air force (again, this supports the thesis about preparing for an offense, not defense). No factory had been moved east before June 1941. There were no real benefits from economical cooperation with Nazis (while Russians claim that it was necessary to modernize Red Army) - do we know about any example where USSR actually got from Germans any piece of technology that had been used before 1941? Sure, Soviets bought Lützow ... and ... ?
well said ,the ussr was hoping for a long bloody war with the west ,the stalin attack from east and take over the whole of europe...the personal accounts of german solders i have read, left in no doubt that the ussr was planning an attack
I have no problem with it, but my question dear historian sir, is why is it okay to sport Communist icons and not Nazi ones, when Communists murdered and starved multiple times the Nazis did? How many people did the Communists kill prior to 1933, 1939, 1945? and were these Communist atrocities and things like the Spartacus Uprising used by the Nazis in propaganda to catalyze the masses?
Depends in what context you use symbols. If it's educational then yes. With nazi symbols I think differently. Because nazism only had it radical phase. Communism on the other hand saw horrific results (under Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot) but also had it's milder variations like we saw after Stalin's death and in reformed China and Vietnam.
14:16 I think Stalin thought Hitler to be brutal in a similar manner as he was. We have to realize both of these men were horrible mass murderers but they operated completely differently. Stalin was like an evil mathematician , cruel and calculating. While Hitlers hatred and mania was derived from paranoia and conspiracy theories and passionate hatred. Hence Stalin from his own perspective was right when he thought Hitler would invade Southern USSR first as it would have been something he would have done. But Hitler was concerned more with glory of capturing Leningrad and Moscow than pragmatic aims like securing fuel and food resources.
Bringing up the Purges without bringing out the other factors is misleading when you speak of the Red Army's incompetence. USSR hugely expanded its army without first expanding it's officer training groups, leading to a shortage of Jr officers and promoting a lot of sergeants beyond their training. Then USSR was reorganizing it's army too, as you indicated into many mechanized corps, with all the confusion a major reorganization involves - such as not training enough mechanics or preparing enough fuel supply - both part of why the soviet armor was had problems in 1941 and the destruction of many tanks without a shot. So the Purges were only one factor, and that mostly in the middle and high command. I don't feel it was the major reason - others have pointed out the Purges did not removed a whole lot more officers than when the French or USA went to war and removed incompetents. My $0.05 worth.
Stalin was fully aware of the situation with Germany, he did not attack first because he feared anti communist forces from within would turn against him and Communist Party. Once the invasion started he called up all Soviet people to defend the motherland and not the communist party. While the German invasion was highly ideological, the Russian answer was more pragmatic and heartfelt and so the afterward celebrations.
A parallel to Tukhachevsky and the way a doctrine was thrown aside after the persons death is Walter wever for Germany, he was true proponent of stragetic bombing in Nazi Germany. Would you be interested in doing a video about him?

Thank you Stefan for shedding some ligth Unfortunately you failed to mention that ever since the Russian Revolution the Soviets trying Revolution in other EU countries like 1918 Germany Hungary how about the Civil War in Spain? As for the invasion of Russia it was a preemptive strike by Germany against Russia. Well documented in the book Icebreaker by a Russian Also have a look at the Soviet emblem of that time it says it all. Globe with Hammer an sichel
@@HistoryHustle yes Stefan dismissed same as they have dismissed the Katyn atrocity which was blamed on the Germans although investigation proved in 1943 that the crimes were committed by the Soviets But the winner writes History 🤣🤣🤣
The theory of a deep operation was developed by Vladimir Triandafillov in 1929, not by Tuchachevsky. Also, it is worth to note that the Russians pioneered the use of airborne troops in 1928, and moving troops by air at the Kiev military exercise in 1936.
In this video you missed the most important preparations for the war - soldiers and military equipment. 1. How could you omit stealthy increase of the Red Army? In the spring of 1938, the Red Army forces numbered 1 million men, but by June of 1941, the total rose to 5 million men. In addition, USSR prepared 18 million reservists. 2. How could you miss out USSR military - industrial complex preparations? For example, in 1930s the USSR produced more tanks and aircrafts than the whole of the rest of the world. The Red Army received over 7000 new tanks and 82,000 artillery pieces (including mortars) between January 1939 and June 1941. In the first half of 1941 the monthly output of Soviet war factories had included: 1000 aircraft, 300 tanks, nearly 4000 guns and mortars, and 175,000 rifles. In the second half of the year these rates rose to 3300 aircraft, 800 tanks, 12,000 guns and mortars, and 270,000 rifles per month. More than 10 million shells, mines and bombs were produced on a monthly basis. Even so, this was just the beginning. By the wartime peak in 1944, monthly Soviet output would stand at 3400 aircraft and nearly 1800 armoured fighting vehicles, 11,000 guns and mortars, 200 thousand rifles, and 19 million shells, mines and bombs. WW2 was an industrial war. USSR outproduced Germany in weapons and ammunition. Take a look at the article - 1941: Soviet Mobilization For A First Strike - scholarworks.calstate.edu/downloads/8g84mm91w
"How Did the USSR Prepare for a German Attack in 1941? " why ´d USSR be Prepared for a war with its main ally Nazi Germany ? they had a pact , don't you forget about it ?
We can't forget, that Soviet Union since the very beginning of its existence was cooperating with Germany in order to destroy peace in Europe once again. On April 16, 1920, Victor Kopp, the RSFSR's special representative to Berlin, asked at the German Foreign Office whether "there was any possibility of combining the German and the Red Army for a joint war on Poland". This was yet another event at the start of military cooperation between the two countries, which ended before the German invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. The Soviets offered Weimar Germany facilities deep inside the USSR for building and testing arms and for military training, well away from Treaty inspectors' eyes. In return, the Soviets asked for access to German technical developments, and for assistance in creating a Red Army General Staff. The first German officers went to the Soviet state for these purposes in March, 1922. One month later, Junkers began building aircraft at Fili, outside Moscow, in violation of Versailles. The great artillery manufacturer Krupp was soon active in the south of the USSR, near Rostov-on-Don. In 1925, a flying school was established near Lipetsk (Lipetsk fighter-pilot school) to train the first pilots for the future Luftwaffe.[2] Since 1926, the Reichswehr had been able to use a tank school at Kazan (Kama tank school) and a chemical weapons facility in Saratov Oblast (Tomka gas test site). In turn, the Red Army gained access to these training facilities, as well as military technology and theory from Weimar Germany.
Have you done a video on why Hitler invaded Russia I'm always unsure of why he did that. Is it because the Soviets were planning to invade Germany. Hitler's orders to invade Russia always confused me it means a war on two fronts

Now…Tukhachevksy had a favorable view of the Germans….He kinda liked the Germans. He was offten invited to German military academy where he tought. But his likings for the Germans made him a target for die Harders like Stalin. After all Germany was blamed for collapse of European empires and economies
Why do you still horse around with that Tukhachevsky as with a holy icon? His so-called irreplaceable warfare talents has already been debunked by the modern Russian historians. Tukhachevsky was useful hero, proclaimed by Khrushchev's revisionist clique and "innocent genius", recalled during Yeltsin's presidency campaign in the 90's to prevent Russian communist party back, but helpless military during Soviet-Poland war. Actually, he won no battle during his entire life. All in all it doesn't mean Trotskyist anti-Stalin plot has never existed. The wind of history placed everything on its legal place.

How many unsupported statemants Tuchachewski was not genius especially in his late years . Soviets simply didn't want to fight for Stalin 3,5 milion surrended in1941 Many tanks were abonded or intentionally wrecked The generals were a avoiding fight
It's a myth that Red Army soldiers surrendered without a fight in 1941. They did fight and mostly surrendered after their ammo ran out. The Germans also suffered many losses in 1941. Please follow the WWII week by week channel for more details about it.

Can you sort of rank them on how interresting they are.
Can't say what this has to do with this topic, but okay. Turn the list vice versa and switch 9 and 10.
To me it seems that Stalin was in splits. One hand he didn't trust Hitler and on the other starting a war the army would become his most important asset (that he just totally demolished by his own paranoia).
I'll talk more about Stalin in two weeks.

Staling: they won't invade, they are friends of us
Zhukov: u sure, I don't think so, I mean they have more than 1 million soldiers on the border and planes flying over.
Staling:....... ThEy WoNt InVaDe Us
Yes, that's where it came down to...
nobody was brave enough to say something else than stalin...this was also a reason why he had to die in a really cruel way.nobody was brave enough to get a doctor and no doctor would have courage to try to cure him, because nobody wanted to be guilty when he dies... perhaps you make a video about the circumstances of stalins death..
Aww no the poor soviet victims. I mean it’s not like the soviets set up socialist republics in parts of Germany in the late 1910’s and 1920’s or anything. And also invading Finland, conquering the Baltic’s and demanding Bessarabia in 1940. The only friends the Bolsheviks had were those with the funny facial features.
Thank you Stefan for shedding some ligth
Unfortunately you failed to mention that ever since the Russian Revolution the Soviets trying Revolution in other EU countries like 1918 Germany Hungary how about the Civil War in Spain?
As for the invasion of Russia it was a preemptive strike by Germany against Russia.
Well documented in the book Icebreaker by a Russian
Also have a look at the Soviet emblem of that time it says it all.
Globe with Hammer an sichel
As yes, the pre-emptive strike theory, by Suvorov. This theory is dismissed by most historians.
The “pre-emptive strike” was made up. I think only Nazi sympathizers believe that nonsense
@@HistoryHustle yes
Stefan dismissed same as they have dismissed the Katyn atrocity which was blamed on the Germans although investigation proved in 1943 that the crimes were committed by the Soviets
But the winner writes History 🤣🤣🤣
Ложь. Ложь и провокация.
The theory of a deep operation was developed by Vladimir Triandafillov in 1929, not by Tuchachevsky. Also, it is worth to note that the Russians pioneered the use of airborne troops in 1928, and moving troops by air at the Kiev military exercise in 1936.
Thanks for sharing this.
Was he of Greek descent? The word “Triandafillo” is Greek for rose.

"How Did the USSR Prepare for a German Attack in 1941? " why ´d USSR be Prepared for a war with its main ally Nazi Germany ? they had a pact , don't you forget about it ?
True. And Stalin didn't want to see it coming. Yet, with tensions rising they did make some preparations in which I talk about in the video.
Shortly from the research I did, they didn't
Please watch the video :)
Can you please do a video about the Russian civil war?
In the future. Expect 2021.
I see.
Have you done a video on why Hitler invaded Russia I'm always unsure of why he did that. Is it because the Soviets were planning to invade Germany. Hitler's orders to invade Russia always confused me it means a war on two fronts
Good one, sure something for the future.
So it was the USSR that annexed Austria, enslaved France, Czechoslovakia, with the approval of England and Poland. Did the USSR also carry out the Munich conspiracy?...
Now…Tukhachevksy had a favorable view of the Germans….He kinda liked the Germans. He was offten invited to German military academy where he tought. But his likings for the Germans made him a target for die Harders like Stalin. After all Germany was blamed for collapse of European empires and economies
Thanks for your reply.
they didn't
Please watch the video.
Please see my sources in the description below the video.
