I nearly lost my entire Hoya collection last year from mealy bugs. I tried alcohol and neem. They just came back. Before trashing all of them, I took them outside and took them out of their pots. I sprayed them ( including roots) with water and Jack's Dead Bug. I made sure all potting soil was off the roots. I potted them back up in fresh soil and new pots. I never saw another mealy bug on them again. It was a kill the plant or cure it solution, and surprisingly, the plants never missed a beat.
Hello from PR!! Totally agree on the trailing plants. I try to trellis most of them to avoid contact with others. I treat mealies with Isopropyl 70% alcohol. Clean leaves or wash with water in shower.
Diatomaceous earth worked well for me. I think the cheep little puffer was key, as it helped me puff the stuff all over my plants - just a light dusting, and no more fungus gnats, or any bugs.
I had a fittonia that became extraordinarily infested with thrips. I cut it back to a stump to trash all of the leaves and put some systemic in the soil. The plant recovered and is now in flower.
I use many/most of the same techniques as you....great minds:) I highly recommend buying a few watercolor paint brush pens (I bought mine on Amazon) and fill with 50-70%rubbing alcohol (I use the 50%). The pens work so much better than Q-tips and I use them on my plants whenever I see a lone mealy. I have at least 5 pens through out my house ready to use. For larger infestations, I use a mixture of insecticidal soap and 50% alcohol. They always come back, but preventatively (weekly spraying) it keeps them in check. Great video.
Ugh😩 I hate mealie bugs. Just when I think I've got them gone they show up again! I use equal parts 70% rubbing alcohol and water, w a couple drops of dish soap. This combo has worked well for me so far. Good luck w eradicating them👍
I always try to take some cuttings if I do have to throw a plant out. A few cuttings are easy to spray/get clean and then you don’t lose the entire plant.
You need to check the roots for mealy bugs. Of all your hoyas, cacti and succulents. That is a major issue with these plants and unfortunately impossible to eradicate without systemics or discarding the entire rootball and starting over. Good luck! ....and...you may want to refrain from putting infected plant tissue and soil into the compost, especially if you are using it yourself in your own garden. That will just compound the issue.
Hi Jeff - I’ve been treating my Hoyas with Safer’s End All which works. I’ve used a strong hand lens and discovered that very very tiny mealy bugs appear at the nodes when there’s new growth. By dealing with those I’ve been more successful in getting rid of the mealies.
I take a milk jug of water with 1/2 cup peppermint castle soap, 1/2 cup tea tree castle soap, 1 cup peroxide and 1 cup rubbing alcohol as my spray. I had a bug infestation with a purchase from big box store. The spray once a week for thirty days has helped. My Hoyas I removed from soil, put in a wash tub with this mix for an hour and repotted, all gone. 😊
Also a tip for trailing plant fill a bucket put some alcohol and or neem dish soap and dunk the full plant in the bucket make sure the water cover the whole plant in the bucket the change the soil cuz sometime the soil get roots mealybugs
I have such trouble with mealies on my hoya plants. I made a DIY plant spray that i got from UA-camr Sober Plant Guy and so far so good! It also helps me untangle some of my long trailing plants!
Mealybugs can live in roots in the soil, I’d unpot any plants where they seem to be at the base. I’ve never had them luckily, but when I get thrips I put all plants I find one on into a big clear bin with a lid so they can’t fly out, and spray it every other day. Seems to work, sometimes the plants don’t like the sudden humidity changes but hey neither do the pests lol
Two of my orquids got mealybugs, i used alcohol and a qtip to clean them, twice a week for a month 😢. Then i sprayed them with neem oil… and that did the job. I do spray my plants with neem oil once every month…just to prevent mealybugs and thrips. So far it works.

For hanging plants with pests I take a cutting to root and start over . It's easier to treat a small cutting and that way I am not throwing whole plant out.
I wonder if the Pure Crop 1 will coat the leaves and kill bugs even if they aren’t sprayed directly. For mealies I use rubbing alcohol mixed with water and dish soap, but I have actually found it works better long-term if I add a bit of canola oil as well. Be careful with light exposure of course.

Last year I bought a plant from ebay and it had mealy bugs and to be honest I didn't know what mealy bugs were to cut a long story short I lost a lot of plants
i did too, tried to treat the plant, used too much neem oil and it died, coated the leaves so they couldnt breath i think. i regretted the 60.0,0 i spent on it, but better that than infecting my albos, thais and florida ghosts which were in the same room. be careful on etsy, the seller didnt offer even a partial refund and lost me as a customer.
These pests can be so frustrating when you have such an excellent collection, especially when they damage a particularly prized plant. Hope the organic pesticide works Jeff (looking forward to an update). I've so often wondered what the evolutionary point is of such pest insects? (if any) ~ they certainly don't benefit the plants or the environment. There is probably an entomologist out there somewhere who can expain the purpose of their existence...apart from them just trying to exist :)
Techplant had an interesting video the other day about ants protecting aphids so they can harvest their honeydew excretions. It's neat how nature works
Mealybugs are my nemesis. They are disgusting! Very difficult to eradicate completely and IMO alcohol on a swab is only addressing the one(s) you can see, not the tinier ones or the eggs, etc.

I do the same. I'm assuming the 70% doesn't burn? I've been using the 50%, but if you've found the 70% doesn't burn, maybe I'll bump mine up to 70%.

I use alcohol and a little water in a spray bottle and it works
I just bought bottles of hand sanitizer and sprayed them off as well

I have thunder flies during summer but they don't attack any plants, they might be a different species of thrips

Yes, it's definitely lessened the thrip problem.... I add about 5 ml or one capful to that spray bottle
