@@vintageMIDI looking forward to it! There's a lot to unpack from the R8. Would love to see tutorials about the 'feel' function and how to use those features!
Thanks for the feedback. I am indeed planning on more advanced how-to videos for the R-8 including the groove/feel features. It's a fun machine to explore and, in my opinion, one of Roland's best engineered yet highly overlooked instruments.
Thank you DJ. Glad you enjoyed the video. I am part-way through production of another video (may be long enough to break into a series) that covers the finer details and features of the R-8.
Thanks for this! I just picked up an R8 on a friends recommendation and was struggling with the interface and getting through the manual. It would be amazing if you can do more R* tutorials
Glad you found the video helpful, Cary. I, too, struggled with the R-8 manual. I do have R-8 videos underway which explore some of the more esoteric and unique features of the R-8. Appreciate the input and sub to the channel!
Is it possible to switch between "kits" with the same beat playing? Or do you have to assign every pad individually with the sound you want? For reference on my BOSS DR202, it is possible to have a "pattern" playing while scrolling through "kits" to find one I like
Biggest issue I have is if you reassign a pad to a different sound AFTER a pattern is recorded, you would need to "find" the original sound again to make any edits to it. Any way around this?
I bought Ethnic ROM sound card for Roland R8. I have followed loading process as shown in the manual. But I can not get those sound from the card in any of my sound BANK. Am I doing something wrong ? Can you please help me. Thanks
To start, I'd suggest purchasing or borrowing another card to see if the problem exists with your R8 or perhaps with just the Ethnic card. Beyond that, just be sure the sounds on the card are assigned to the pad and MIDI note you expect to use. If you need further assistance, detail exactly what you do during and after the card load. Perhaps we can diagnose the issue. If you find the resolution, please let us know here in the comments.
Thanks for showing your love for the R-8 videos, Simon.... Indeed another R-8 video is on the schedule and currently in production. Appreciate the support!
Where did you get this R-8? This is mint. I can't find one in the used market that hasn't been beat to hell. Luckily they are built to last. Mine appears to have gone through a war, but it all still works. PS. Great video, even after reading through the manual, online I had a hard time figuring this stuff out. This video has been crazy helpful.
Glad the video helped you out, Marcus. I made it because I, too, had trouble understanding the manual. Wish I could say this R-8 is truly mint; I bought it used on Reverb from a seller who improperly package it, damaging the LCD screen. I then had to buy another R-8 for parts to get a screen for replacement. It was TOTALLY worth it. Love this classic drum machine; happy to hear you do, too!
@@vintageMIDI When I finally got my hands on one, I was truly impressed at the tech and at how customizable the pcm voices are for being a drum machine released in '89
How do you change an instrument on an already programmed pattern, for instance if i want to swap out the hi hat to a different hi-hat once the pattern has been created? I have struggled to figure this out, for instance when i assign a different sound to pad 1 then record another pass it overlays it on top, but then i am unable to revert back to the original sound to delete that pattern within pad 1
I think that you may ultimately have more than one instrument assigned to the same note value. This can sometimes be easier to detect if the MIDI notes are recorded in a sequencer (preferably something on the computer so you can see the note value at a glance
Thx a lot ! It's been really usefull ! can you explain how to select the pattern when it's mastered by another machine through midi, it would be awesome :) ?
I think the next logical demo for the R-8 would be showing off the feel & groove functions. May take a bit to thoroughly learn the functions, but the video on those features could be a fun challenge. Hope you're diggin' the R-8 so far. Thanks for the request.
@@vintageMIDI Yeah I quite like it. I especially like the sounds on bank E. It's obviously great for 80's music but the snares for example can sound really unique and quite modern if you play with the pitch. Definitely still usable in more modern sounding productions. I also have a D-50 and a Juno 106, it plays together nicely with those. :) Really wanna get my hands on the 808 card. The 'Thrillr' sound makes a pretty nice tambourine/sleigh-bell type sound if you pitch it up 2 octaves.
The Octapad series are MIDI controllers, so I would imagine those pads could be assigned any instrument sound on the R-8 when connected via MIDI. R-8 sounds can be triggered by a sequencer or MIDI keyboard, too.
What is the significance of this video in 2020 ? Is there any other modern alternative for this. i'm looking for a reliable drum machine with sampling, song mode and sequencing capability (stand alone, not computer based). So that i can control the songs from my keyboard. Any help would be appreciated..
Many R-8 fans out there are curious about how the R-8 works, so I made a video to explain the R-8 workflow since I could not find one on YT. Some have mentioned Roland's 2019 MC-707 Groovebox as a modern R-8, but I have no experience with the MC-707. Might be worth a look.
This old piece is still better then all the new fancy stuff were they left out "song mode" and that just because they decided that everyone will perform live with their gear. Pathetic.
Agreed. Funny enough,, Song Mode can be used as the "basic track" for live gigs with the pads still used to perform. Kinda the best of all worlds compared to newer gear that has no song mode.
finally a good tutorial, please do more R8 tutorials !!! MANUAL IS A PAIN IN THE ASS
thanks so much for this
Adding to the thanks. Just got an R8 and this has really helped me start creating beats.
Appreciate the 'thanks', Patrizio.
Glad the video made getting into the R-8 easier.
My favourite drum machine, beautiful sounds. Great tutorials, keep em coming!!
Glad you enjoyed the video, hocusbogus86. It is a classic with enough features for several more tutorials.
@@vintageMIDI looking forward to it! There's a lot to unpack from the R8. Would love to see tutorials about the 'feel' function and how to use those features!
Great tutorial. Please show more of this unit's capabilities.

APPRECIATE YOUR VIDEO!
Great tutorial. Can you make a video discussing some of the other functions such as quantization, etc? Thank you

Yes.... for sure a step-writing video needs to be in the cue. Adding that specifically to the production list. Thank you for the request.
Make beats like they did in the '90s. Patterns, then songs, then Billboard charts (do those even exist anymore?)
Awesome thank you! Also the Groove feature would be great to learn about
@@carygeorges Agreed.... groove has to be in the video series, too. Appreciate the suggestion.
Auf jeden Fall mehr

Great video! Thanks a lot and subscribed!
Appreciate the feedback, Description de l'Égypte. Happy to have you onboard the channel.
Could you make a demo vid showing how to create and save customized user drum kits ?
I'll research the process and put it on the list of tutorials for the R8. Thanks for the suggestion.
would you be able to make a video showing how to save a song and a kit to the machine and a memory card?
Got me started now. thanks
Good to hear it was helpful, Bruce. Much appreciated. These ol' R-8 machines have a ton of possibilities.
Please more tutorials about this wonderful drum machine!
Thank you for the feedback; There are more R-8 tutorials on the way.

Indeed I will add {program changes for patterns via MIDI}
to an upcoming video in this series.
@@vintageMIDI thx for your answer. I found one guy on YT who manages to sequence another synth with R-8. For the other way, i didn't find.
Thanks for demo! Is this an Electronic card sounds?
Glad you like the video. The card in the video uses both stock and SN-R8-10 DANCE card sounds.

Song mode and separate outs is very rare these days.
