Im more of a Beatles/classic-rock fan, but I recognize greatness when I hear it, and I hear it on this album. Nelson Riddle has said that this album was the best thing he ever did. Your review is outstanding, Sinatra is indeed going to a darker place here, this album is a must have for anyone who loves music. Great job. Im subscribeing.
I'd been wanting to watch this clip for a while and I finally remembered to watch it just now. I can't wait to hear it now. Cash will be tight for a couple of weeks, so I ordered it from the library. I'll have to search my record shelves, I might have picked up an old copy on LP over the years, but I'm not sure. My friend at work might have this, I'll ask him when I see him in the morning.
Great album. One of my favorites of all time. Had the mono vinyl for years. Found the new stereo copy recently without the shrink wrap, so I got a good discount. Thanks for the review.
Brian, Thank you for the wonderful review of a game changing album in American music. Truly outstanding albums are indeed a rarity in our modern times, but it is awe inspiring to hear the type of magic that could be captured with limited recording techniques. Credit to the artistry of the musicians, arrangers, and producers involved. Thinking also of Kind of Blue, Pet Sounds, or Rubber Soul through Sgt. Pepper’s. This is a remarkable album and extends Sinatra’s artistry to even greater heights. My other true favorites besides Wee Small Hours include Where are You, and No One Cares. As you mentioned Gordon Jenkins provided something different in style with his use of strings. No One Cares in particular to me has an incredible overall warmth of sound and Sinatra’s voice exudes magic through that microphone. Would love to hear your expertise on the Jenkins albums as well. I wrote to you months ago that SINGS FOR ONLY THE LONELY is the best pre-Beatles album, so obviously I welcomed and agreed with this review. You persuaded me I need to buy it again for the expanded content
Brian Thank You! Great review I will buy 2 CD version! Sinatra in the 50's is a whole different Frank??? Maybe WE should thank Ava at this point??? Although it almost killed poor Frank! Thanks Again!!!
Great review I will be purchasing the new CD my old version sounds flat to me. I'm always torn between mono and stereo. I know mono in most cases were the main mix, but I always still lean towards the stereo. I have a large Sinatra collection/rat pack. One of my favorite is Robin and the Seven Hood soundtrack. I transferred that to CD
The stereo mixes of this always sounded problematic to me, the Larry Walsh edition that came out around 89 or 90 was the best. The Bob Norberg remaster that was done in 1998 as a part of the "Entertainer Of The Century" series was horrible because he did all sorts of dehissing. Robin and The 7 Hoods is a classic. I think Bing was in that one as well.

Excellent discussion, Brian. I have “In The Wee Small Hours” and you’ve convinced me to search this one out....hopefully on vinyl.
The reissued this as a double vinyl this year with the new stereo mix.

This is a great reissue. Wish it was getting the hype the others are. You are so right about the best pre Beatles album.
loved the review, masterpiece record. keep it up!
He [Nelson] has also lost his baby daughter in the time of this recorded.
Agree. Sings For Only The Lonely is Sinatra's best album. The Jobim album is second for me.
Well said! Great album, even better on Vinyl - its a real treat!

Yeah. He was going through some stuff because of Ava. I think it really comes across in this album.

Just curious if you heard the Mobile Fidelity release from around 10 years ago.
Not yet, but I have heard great things about it.
