I’ve done the same for the last year for exactly the same reasons!
One additional reason is that when I buy a CD directly from an active artist, it supports them far more than the streaming revenue. (Then I also often stream it anyway to help them that way, too.)

I never stopped buying and listening to CDs. After many tests I have no doubt that the sound quality of a CD is unbeatable. Totally agree with you about the booklet also. It is an important part of the listening experience. I am also a musician myself and I cannot listen to any music without knowing who wrote it and who plays on it. But the main thing is the way we want to listen to music. Maybe it is because of my age, but I still want to take my time and listen to my LP from the beginning to the end, which is not the way youngsters do any more. It gives me the time to dive deeper in the atmosphere and to hear the whole story the album is about. And even the higher price of the CD is still a good thing, because it makes you listen to it twice and more if you want to get enough for the money. How many musics have we disliked when when we first heard them before adoring them ? That is a thing that is simply impossible with Spotify.

Agree with everything you said here. It's interesting that my absolute favorite albums are albums that I thought were terrible on the first listen...then something drew me back and I listened a second time, and a third...and I realized the brilliance of what I was listening to.

I've been listening to my CDs since 1984. I've even got the earliest Abbey Road and Dark Side of the Moon because they were essentially among the only 50 CDs that I could buy at the store. I certainly love having a broad spectrum of high-quality recordings available and the length is so important because you can really get into the feel of what the artists had to say. I would make it analogous to a chapter of a novel being a single, but the whole novel (album) sometimes really had a lot to say. Crime of the century by Supertramp. Moving Pictures by Rush. Dark Side of the Moon of course. So many real cinematic presentations in their entirety and Sonic purity. I love it.

Convenience and quality. iTunes, download, save, use an equalizer in my system if needed, but CD's Albums, they can stay in their storage crates.
The convience of digital is superior. May be subtleties in sound, but no enough to put me off. Being older, the less s*hit around to dust the better.
Yeah the booklets and sleeves are cool...but the music is the priority for me. Of course, I can transfer CD's that are unobtainable online. For example,
Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains The Same soundtrack has been remixed by Page Lord knows how many times, but it is a bit different than the original mix.
The original mix isn't available to download. So that is the exception. Other than that, Sgt. Pepper's Loney Hearts Club Band sounds premium from download.😉
    fun topic, Ben Eunson!

I should add that your point about the concentrated or focused listening experience is the main one for me. I come from a classical background and am used to sitting in a seat and listening to an entire concert of music that takes hours. I've spent many evenings listening to whole albums from beginning to end, and believe it's the best way to experience them. I've always assumed that albums are designed to be heard that way.

Couldn't agree more! I have absolutely benefited from physical media as both a fan and an artist. I've definitely had a deeper connection with albums I've bought on CD, I think I must have run my copy of Ah Via Musicom and Aja to the bone the amount of times I've spun them and I love those records so much! Makes such a difference. And then just with my band, we've been very fortunate to have a small music loving fanbase who still buy CDs. It's not paying the bills by any means but it's meant we've been able to funnel all the money from CD sales back into the music to fund higher fidelity recording, more art, music videos, more shows. Got our keys player some studio time to record on a grand piano on the new record because we had funds from album and merch sales from the last one. It makes such a difference to small artists having that extra support!

Overchoice is definitely a problem I tend to run into. This problem of too much stuff means that everything starts getting deprioritized and thus devalued.
I've been trying to make a point lately of stopping the playlists when I come across an artist I like and immediately delving into their records. This is on the whole a better experience than just sitting in the playlist of new stuff all day. I still think it's a bit of a problem though since my total listening will equate to what? A couple of cents for the artist? But it's hard to go back to that period when all we had was physical media and you'd listen to the same album for a month straight.
Weirdly, I've had better luck finding music here on UA-cam. Some people only post their stuff here. The algorithm seems to do a pretty good job of serving up more stuff that's actually like the things I'm listening to. As opposed to weighting the algorithm in favor of the things that are selling the most. For slightly bigger artists than the people who are just making music in their bedroom, you can find live performances and other things that will give you a better sense of how they perform.
Maybe I'll eventually work my way back around to CDs. Or at least lossless digital downloads. But it'd never be for sound quality as that's never been an issue for me.

Streaming is more convenient for sure but the way it is currently modeled has also destroyed the value of music in the public eye. People don’t appreciate the amount of dedication it takes to make great records anymore, because we can access nearly all recorded music in human history at the click of a button, basically for free.

I agree wholeheartedly with you and am still thrilled about the time in the 80's when we moved from vinyl to cd's. Too many benefits to list here. However, over the last few years I have been have a more and more difficult time finding the cd's that I want. Other than the pop/rock huge groups, they appear to be making fewer and fewer cd's by artists and genres that I prefer to listen to, especially jazz and classical. I'm deeply worried about the availability of cd's going forward. Has anybody else had the same issue?

Great point - I am slightly worried about this as well. CD is still my preferred format for listening, but CD print runs have been getting smaller for a while now...unless of course there's a CD resurgence in the 2020s (just like there was with Vinyl in the 2010s). There seems to be a renewed focus on physical media, so I am quitely hoping that there will be a CD resurgence this decade

I’ve been tempted to get my CDs out of storage recently. I love vinyl for a lot of the reasons Ben gives in the video - information on the sleeve, a more focussed listening experience etc. I don’t have space for a proper hi fi system so I got the Audio Technica Sound Burger for vinyl last year, which is amazing - maybe not the hi-est of fi but really convenient. I’m looking for something similar for CDs but only found the Shanling EC Mini so far. Let me know if you know of anything similar but preferably a bit cheaper…

All very valid points. I've never used streaming services, other than checking things out on youtube or bandcamp to see if I want to buy. I have piles of CD and vinyl, but in general CDs have the best sound. You can play them infinite times they do not degrade. Most new recordings are made digitally and pressing them on vinyl is only degrading the sound quality.
The only reason why some records maybe sounded better was the mix + mastering. Most humans cannot tell the difference between hi-res and 16-44. Don't believe me, do a blind taste test for yourself.
Streaming services are lossy and you never actually own the product. The artists get fractions of a cent.
CDs are easier for the artist to earn money and are relatively cheap to ship via post, or travel with on tour.

It's not so much that CDs are _better,_ but streaming formats are _worse._ I have the original Dire Straits album on _tape_ and comparing it with the same tracks on UA-cam (through the same equipment), it's much clearer, despite my copy being well over forty years old. I agree with Ben that streaming and UA-cam have brought music from all over the world into our homes. As for listening through an album completely, well that's how us boomers used to do it, before we had multiple distractions from many TV channels, the Internet, mobile phones etc! What did we do on Sundays, when all the shops were shut, there were only three TV channels (in the UK), and no mobile phones?

I've never stopped buying and listening to CDs. The problem some people have with CDs today is that they... don't have a CD player anymore! But instead they can choose from over 30 million songs on Spotify alone!
I know it's a bit off topic, but good fun: how long could you listen to it if you didn't stop to sleep, eat, or anything other than listen to Spotify constantly? This is some simple math to do; assuming 4 min/song, this would be about 120,000,000 minutes, or 2,000,000 hours, or 83,333.3333 days, or 228.1591 years!

But once all the mixing and mastering has been completed, your ears cannot tell the difference between 24-192 and 16-44. Take a 24bit wav and dither/downsample to 16-44. Then put a bunch of those two files in your media player and hit random. Close your eyes and skip through. You cannot hear a difference.
