In November 2014 we had an online vote on which kata sequence we should collectively explore. Several hundred people voted and the opening motion of Saifa was the winner.
There has been loads of great contributions from people all over the globe (see the kata application section of the forum of iainabernethy.com). Here is our offering.
Saifa is not a kata my group practises, but today (22nd of November 2014) I took the sequence to the dojo and we spent 10 minutes at the end of the class collectively exploring the possible uses for the motion.
These were our favourite three. We feel these fit the kata well and leave no part of the motion unexplained.
Thanks Tim, Fred, Darren, Callum, Joe, Charles, Richard, and Andrew for their thoughts.
    All the best,
    Iain

Abernathy has the best interpretations of kata on the “UA-cams.”

Not seen this video til now. Opened my eyes to the potential applications of the first step alone. Thanks Iain.

As always, I bow to your bunkai, osu! :)
However (as always), just a slide note to correct a little bit: you step forward with right foot into shiho-dachi while in kata there is step back with left foot. Not that changes much what you do with your hands but, I may speculate, this kata's step suggest that you extend your opponent and unbalance him before he could counterattack your leg in a case you step forward into him. My two cents adjusted for inflation.
And I personally like the part with uraken (back-fist strike) instead of otoshi-hiji-ate (elbow downwind strike) which is more in common to fighting/sparring application if to be extracted as separate issue: You clear the obstruction (i.e. opponent's hand) in front of you with your back palm and then make a fast atemi with forward uraken in the created opening (and then proceed whatever you need to bang him whatsoever).

Fantastic, as usual. Sensei, are there any plans for a video of a flow drill (two person) of the whole kata?
