Man, this is no easy for transition for a trained rock drummer yet Neil does a damned good job playing in unfamiliar jazz/swing territory with one of the best bands in the world. Buddy would smile at this rendition. Neil, as with the true greats, is never one to shy away from breaking out of his comfort zone and here he does it with typical Peartian gusto!
What a great performance, Neil's even using traditional drum stick handling, totally impressive. As for myself, drums are on my list as third instrument, studied rudimental drumming as well as jazz, always held my sticks in the traditional manner, never open handed. A tip to all the keyboardists, a good half hour of rudiments on a kit or even just a practice pad prior to any gig or performance will improve your abilities on a keyboard by at least % 20, guaranteed. Check it out, you'll be amazingly surprised. After all technically keyboards are considered to be a percussion instrument. I tell you no lies, just give it a whirl.
Neil was great. One of the best. But he can’t swing. And he knows it, he took jazz lessons and worked on it for years. He deserves as much credit for that as any rock solo.
His chops and percussion composition skills were undeniable, but his swing feel was all but nonexistent. I was unfamiliar with this tune, so I checked out the Buddy Rich version to see if it even _was_ a swing tune (since Buddy occasionally played Latin and straight 8th stuff). That's how much this piece didn't swing.

Some of Neil's biggest influences are jazz drummers. This is not unfamiliar territory!
Peart and Rich got together to jam and knocked some ideas off each other a number of times way back when if I'm not mistaken...
Neil, thank you for taking on this project!🙏🏻
Wow! Great job! RIP Mr. Neil Peart!
He plays a little off and rough here but the guy was a rock drummer not a jazz player. I give him credit for having the stones to do this. 👍
Yeah,I was told by my teacher that he can do "crawling jazz"... He can do it, but he's the Overlord of the progressive rock drumkit.
This is brilliant drumming, from one of the best!
like a bus driver taking a formula 1 car for a drive
good players.
WOW" What a" drummer He Was The Best!! Canadian A. Rip Neil Mr Peart
People criticize Neil playing Jazz. I wanna hear Buddy Rich play Rush.

I think this is mislabled. Its Mexicali Rose.
Of course, Thank you...
No, the tune is definitely called Mexicali Nose. It was incorectly labeled on the Buddy Rich Memorial video.

Neils good at time signatures but absolutely crap at playing Buddy's work.
