My 1989 Pioneer CT-656 3 head Casette Deck playing some music.
I made the recordings on this same deck a few days ago. Source was a CD player, recorded on a used TDK Chrome tape.
Tracks recorded with adjusted Bias and Dolby HX pro. Only on track 2 Dolby C is also enabled.
I was surprised by the quality of this deck. It wasn't a cheap deck in its days clearly seen by its build quality like aluminium face plate and excellent electronics. The only thing i had to fix was clean the controls, they were a lit scratchy.
Just judge the quality by yourself. I will try it with a metal tape as soon as i find one.

    Music:
Adele - Rolling in the deep,
Adele - If it hadn't been for love,
Katie Melua - 2 bare feet,
Joss Stone - Could have been you.

Love to have one or more of these great machines.

Actually, these Pioneer recorders have VU-scale meters. You can record up to +4...+6 dB VU with no distortion AT ALL using just regular chrome or ferric tapes. More level = less noise

Yes i noticed you can record far beyond the 0 dB point without distortion (depends a bit on the Bias setting).
Thats why i love those 3 head machines. Record, directly monitor the recording and find the highest level without distortion on the fly.

Yep! But there are different scales out there. I've met three types where 0 dB meant different magnetic flux. 160 nWb/m(your deck, also known as 0 VU), 200 nWb/m(Dolby Level, on some DENON decks, pointed as 0dB) and 250 nWb/m(Standard DIN 0 dB) If you record a tape on your deck up to 0 dB, it will play approx -4 dB on a standard scale deck. Meaning that +4 is actual 0dB. Beyond that, depends on tape. Usually, a normal ferric tape can hold up to +6 spikes. Nice deck BTW! Love pioneers. Really built to last.

this deck still runs on its original belt. the only thing i had to do to it was clean the potentiometers and the heads.

It was a wrong setting in the video editting software. My video was 1080P 24 and i editted the video on 1080P 25. So it is missing a frame every few seconds.
The tape runs smooth. I love this tape deck.

can you make photo with position of calibration resistors on plate?

Which calibration resistors do you mean? Like the bias calibration on the PCB?
