You really get the feeling of why the marines couldn't stand Gorman. He wasn't combat tested, and he didn't even know their names, but they had to pretend to respect him because of his rank. It makes Vasquez' line of "You always were an asshole, Gorman" hit harder. She shows that she does respect him, shit talking to his face like the other marines, because he proved himself. It's not about rank. It's about who you are as a soldier.
Gorman was a total boot Louie, they should have had double the amount of personnel, a whole platoon, with an experienced Lieutenant or Captain as the OIC & at least 2 senior Staff NCOs. As it was, they weren't at full strength, they got caught unaware by the ferocity & cunning of their opponent, & the pitiful amount of Marines they detailed to that mission is demonstrable evidence their HQ Command underestimated the overall danger. Heads should roll for that fuck-up. They should have set up a perimeter outside the colony, divided it into sectors, assigned personnel to scout them, & then report back, then start figuring out what the best tactical strategy was to attempt a rescue of any of the colonists.
This is such a simple mistake - but brings the movie towards reality. Their arrival is so much more SCARY AF because the context seems real. Real people, real mistakes, just genius
every line from this movie is legendary
There is literally no other movie with as many quotable lines.

It just shows how unprepared Gorman was to lead that team.
