2021-2022 Fresno Hmong New Year Dance Reel #2

I came up with this concept a month ago while having a manic episode but had decided to scrap the idea since I thought it would be too difficult to coordinate a dance video with random strangers. I was at the Fresno Hmong New Year on day 2 and saw these young girls practicing for their performance and went over to ask if they would allow me to film them for a video and to my surprise they were all very excited! I just told them to freestyle it and the rest was history! I just lurked around the stage for a bit for some of the girls to finish up their routines so that I could ask them. These were all just one shot and no retakes, that’s how amazing these girls are! Sometimes you just have to put your trust in people and magic will happen! I didn’t know if this would work with an American song, but I just trusted my gut with this and I am quite proud of it. I spent less than a minute filming each girl because they all moved so fast that I really had to be quick on my feet to make sure that I could capture every moment.
I’ve always had a love for dance and have shot dance portraits at nationals for about 3 years but I’m still always amazed at how each individual moves! If I ever have a daughter I would love to put her in Hmong Dance classes because it helps them loosen up and not be shy plus it helps preserve our beautiful culture! I hope this video gets you dancing as it did me! 🙂
