I haven't danced this style in a few years, and I'm still impressed by the incredible talent and stamina of this style. Kinda makes me dust off my old regalia and shake the rust off.
This is VERY beautiful! Thank you for posting it. But, as a White person, not understanding the customs, beliefs or ceremonies of the First Nations People, and wanting to understand, I would love to know what the dance represents, what it means, why and when it is/was performed, the significance of the costumes, etc. I think it important to understand all of this so we can understand each other and work together.
I believe it's how their original nations celebrated Tru art and dance in their great nations. It is a beautiful traditions and I also want to keep it alive.
I’m not going to go super into detail because all tribes/nations have different teachings and traditions, but dancing started as medicine and ceremony and over the years became competitive and for showcase like this. Grass dance (what I was taught) was a very special honor, it was used to stomp the grass down for ceremony. Regalia and movements are meant to represent the grass waving. In the US we weren’t legally allowed to practice our traditional ways until 1979, so it’s become an even more special practice for us.
I always love watching these events/contests. Love seeing heritage and traditions carried on to the next generations. All the dancers are so good that I could never be able to pick out one as a winner. They all are amazing.
I admire their strength and the love of their history and family. Beautiful - the talent - the dance clothes (and blessings on the designers/sewers of these clothes).
I absolutely love PowWows. I am part Cherokee, but love any Native Americans dancing. These men ware just awesome with their nimble movements. The regalia, likewise, is just gorgeous. I certainly could not be a judge and choose a winner from any of these dancers. All of them are just wonderful. The Cherokee do not dance much differently from those at this Mandaree Celebration or Lakota. I almost had an opportunity several years ago while on Pine Ridge Indiana Reservation in South Dakota, home of the Ogala Lakota, to attend the last night of their PowWow. However, I could not attend. Thank you for this wonderful traditional video.
Funny u mention pine ridge, there's also rosebud reservation. I'm Oglala Lakota Sioux, not much. But I feel more Sioux than I am. My dad's side is out there in black hills. I've always wanted to visit pine ridge or rosebud.
@@saylap.5392 Yes, I know about Rosebud. I have traveled and assisted a minimum of 4 schools on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation for about 14 years. Once the pandemic hit, however, I could not get on the Reservation that year. So, I just send boxes of school supplies, coats and sweaters for the children. I also adopted an Ogala Lakota Family.which means I send birthday gifts, special holidays, and Christmas along with food.
I'm in awe of the dedication required to be any kind of indigenous dancer. One doesn't just learn the steps and the music, as in Western European ballet. It's so much more than that because it's inextricably part of a culture. Thank you for sharing this event from start to finish; my powwow experience is very light (been to one, lol), but I hope to increase it.
If you love the videos and you have a chance to see a live Pow-Wow, DO IT!!!!! It's an amazing experience; the electricity, the feeling of the drums and dancers through the ground, and in the air, it's a very emotional experience but one that is certainly worth the trip.
WOW MAN WOW !!! This is SO FANTASTIC. I am so intrigued by the culture, the history, the regal dressing the significance of each dance within each Nation. This is One of the NEATEST, COOLEST IMPRESSIVE BEAUTIFUL THINGS I'VE EVER SEEN!!! Sincerely. THANK YOU ❤️

I love this….thank you for posting….I’ve been to many of these events at the powwows and I love it all. I was welcomed into many families and even participated in many of the dances in my own Native American white doeskin ceremonial dress… I feel like I’m home…thank you for letting me be a part of it and welcoming me as part of your family and being my friends….👍❤️🐎 There is good in all cultures, but forgetting our heritage and the past is forgetting who we are and where we come from, leaving a void in our hearts and within ourselves.….an incomplete lost persona…..👍❤️🙏🏼😇🐎
Hello. This right here is the first time or first one I have ever listened to that WE can hear both. First hear the dance's gingle their gingle to hear the singers sing with the dancers moves and or the dancers giggling and dancing to the music. The Singers and Dancers are just Beautifully sung to the danced in the rhythm...
I have decided to watch as many of these wonderful Native American videos , the dancing, the singing , the music ,the drumming are very GROUNDING ! It will definitely help me "Walk on Balance on Mother Earth"! Especially in this difficult election season where so much is at stake! German- Swiss American here! I don't want to live in a FASCIST USA! And my Great Uncle died on a beach in Anzio, Italy fighting AGAINST FASCISTS! He !was a Staff Sgt. in the US Army. He definitely was NOT A LOSER! Native Americans honor veterans
Many Native American have and still serve in the US Military! Where would this country be without the Navajo Code Talkers/ US Marines???At every Pow-Wow I have ever attended , the very first dance was an Hornoring Dance for Veterans! RESPECT! 🫡🫡🫡🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🪖⛑️🪖⚓️⛵️⚓️
god damn i miss dancing at pow wows man. even just going to watch the dancing and enjoy the music, food, vibes. some of the best times i ever had in my life
I am so proud to see the indigenous tribes Teaching the newer generations About the past and showing them how important it is to keep their traditions alive. I can only hope that this younger generation teaches their children.
Taught in distinctive ways, very much on a person's own till find safety. Freely travel by that I mean usually no interference unless very real danger.
I am a so called coloured person from Cape Town South Africa with Tamil Indian and Cherokee blood mixed with Caucasian and Bushman, always had an affinity for native Americans before I found out about my heritage ❤
We definitely need to see more of this in the world. They stole so much of our history and told us who to be and how to be and the more deep I research native Americans the closer I feel to home and it resonates. Twerking does not resonate for me this type of dancing and music does. It’s very spiritual and enlightening and it feels like a coming together.
I see why the Men and Women of the Indigenous Native American culture look and stay healthy 🤔 looking because their jumping up and down, a lot at the POW WOW !!!! to me in a way that's good excerise almost like aerobics. However, if your physically fit and your body can take and stand it well, may the Great spirit continue to bless you. 🙏 Godbless 😂❤😊
Was a cool deal for them to pick but they only pick who they know also .. still the same as them picking the first round … so pretty much still a fixed deal .. jus saying .. y’all have a good one
It's always been that way. The trick is to politic and get to know everyone, then you'll always place. It also teaches you to network, communicate, be a well-spoken person, and be a good way to stay out of trouble.
If I was a powwow committee, I'd probably just put everyone's name and number in a draw for that category. But for specials you can have judges and pick your ppl. You don't gotta be the best to bruise and win or lose. That's why you gotta prove ppl wrong and keep dancing you'll eventually know them ifyou keep going.
It has a different meaning when your mom died 20 years ago but she went to an an Indian Boarding school...shilaqua (sp?). But she wiuld cry when westerns came on and the Indians were killed. Son died of fentanyl but my daughtér, Emma Snuggs, lives on...watchtch out... She's such a fighter. I love you Em...i never told you how much cuz i cant but i do grandma, granny, the Webbs... Do not call their attire a costume but rather their dance outfit or even better “REGALIA” All are hand stitched, hand beaded each has it’s own life representation.
If you learn how to dance this you can pretty much dance to the beat of mostly any song. The drum is so simply yet the source of the rhythm of any good song. 🦅
Lady stopped me dancing on the side of the road, off road a bit for safety of course, says I need to get into one of these. I didn't grow up with the luxury of family, but I am willing to try, I love the sound of this art, how would I get into one?
I would love to have a Sitting Bull Holiday. Let’s get Hollywood to make a true movie about what was done to my Native American People. How about that!! 🙏🏾❤️
It is so beautiful. The music. The dance. The regalia. Stay strong.
Indians definitely created the shuffle. Awesome to see traditions still thriving.

This is ABSOLUTELY beautiful!
So thoughtful what was done with the lady’s materials after she passed.
Even better than just sending to a thrift store!
This was so wonderful. The dancing was spectacular and so many were sooo good. Beautiful!
❤ I Just enjoy this so much ! ❤ Thank you !
Thank you for sharing. I marvel at the love and creativity that have gone into the costumes, and I also marvel at the stamina of the dancers.
