I just got a new job where a large portion of my coworkers are from Russia. I came on UA-cam to find something that would help me understand their culture better so I could be relatable and at the very least respectful. Thank you so much for this video. You were both informative and honest. 🙏

I love watching your channel. I still remember your presentation on smiling. I was hoping to visit Russia when I was retired, but now that I'm retired looks like I'll have quite a bit of a wait. Until then, at least I can watch your videos!

i agree with you on the subject of talking about medical procedures. I t is so gross. I find it hard not to say "mind your own business". regarding weekends just say" no plans,l am just going to hang out at home." it is called small talk. or say" i am just going to take it easy."

About past weekends: it came to Russia too - everybody is asking each other "how was weekend", but mostly out of politeness, so I don't have to inform everybody, how much time I spent in a mall or how exciting was my visit to my mother-in-law (and surely nobody really wants to hear it, and thank God for that). So unless I had something really interesting and want to share it badly, I don't have to be specific - "Nice" is enough (в смысле "нормально") (And even in the latter case, it doesn't mean that the person, who is asking, actually wants to hear, how good it was, so just to not get anyone too excited, it may be better to keep it to myself)))

as an American I think i'm just uncomfortable with silence and small talk makes the situation seem less threatening

Traditionally, men (and women) are not afraid of silence. It's called The Strong Silent type. It's normal in America.

Small talk is sort of a ritual here (in the US); it doesn't really mean anything - it's just something people are expected to do. I don't care much for it myself. I am curious, though; what do Russian co-workers talk about with each other?

Just to understand, we don`t like that unhonesty, you do not know those people. To put it simple it`s no matter if inside the house is warm, until the door opens you cant feel it. Same with people, no matter if their hearts are warm if there is a wall of ice between.
