A Simpler Time - Australia in the 1960s

  • There is little doubt Australia was an easier, more laid back place to live in the 1960s and 70s. Here is some more restored Super 8 footage from my father-in-laws collection. The first car to feature is a HD Holden, then the original people mover, the Morris 1100. A time before seat-belts, no less than 4 kids get in the back, one (my wife) sits in the middle of the floor - such was the space between the front and back seats. Like the Mini also parked in the drive, the 1100 was designed by Alec Issigonis and was an exceptional car. Next to feature is a beautiful EJ Holden. I love seeing these old Holdens at Car Shows - but to see one as it was when new puts it all into context. An EH Holden appears, and then a large group of children (wife included) and two dogs hop in the back of an FE Holden Ute for a trip down to the beach - something you would never get away with today. To wrap things up, some footage from 1975-1976, featuring a HJ Holden Kingswood, HQ GTS Monaro and 2-Door Ford Landau Coupe. That latter looks to be a real beauty. At the end of the clip I included some footage of the Sydney skyline, as it was back in 1976, with the CenterPoint tower still under constuction. That skyline sure has changed over the decades.

    I love the Morris 1100.

I am surprised we drove them . I mean they were unbelievably unsafe, awful brakes, no seat belts , lousy handling , kids riding in back of utes. Surprisingly I think it was the year that Victoria introduced “ Seat Belts” that attitudes started to change. & the 1034 campaign started by the “ Herald & Weekly “ times when it was a news paper. We never had a road toll that high after that.

@Dr Mengele No . I think there was & still is a general apathy as to what damage a 1 tonne car could cause & the drum brakes were just awful.
, The steering volume was a spear. Top gear the TV show did a safety comparison between a 15 year Volvo & a newish Ford Fiesta . Surprisingly the Fiesta was far safer hitting the crash barrier. I was taught how to save myself & others when I was swimming, a lot on bicycle safety , but no crash helmets. I had my bike up to 50km/hr on a number of occasions but no helmets.

Not all care were really advanced back then, so of course they certainly weren't as safe as things are nowadays. They might have "lousy" things about them, compared to how things are these days of course. Or even some things that might be 10-15 years newer than them, but not everyone could afford some higher-end thing with various features, for the time. And not everyone would have wanted to back then either, but times change & things from the 1990's even are far better with many of those characteristics. And people, would be like you are & say that you'd be suprised they were driven back then. But there weren't as many options, it's not like everyone would have gone out & just gotten volvos, or various european cars of the time which of course, were better in many of those qualities back then. So you aren't wrong, but times were different back then. Cars advanced, for better & safer. So yes, they are inferior to the cars of today. Even things that were 20 years, or in some cases, 10 years newer than the cars of the 1970's even are better. But even these days, not everyone can afford some new, or newer car. Not all people would just send their cars to the tip or the wreckers right because they are slightly unsafer, that would be a monumental waste. Would sure be keeping my 1997 Magna & 2007 SSV Ute for many years to come for sure. Will say that cars back then were more unique, more charming than the boring, plasticky same-same crossovers, 4WD's & utes that are really the only things you can get new these days. Safer yes, but they are just all same-old, same-old really.

@@huleeyaxerssius7 That is not quite what I am saying. The massive improvements in computer power in design, manufacturing & onboard applications has improved the engineering of cars immensely. They are also relatively cheap compared to the late 60’s. Quality is also an area that the industry has just fundamentally changed in . Fairly cheap engine parts no longer need gadgets etc. i have a car built ⚫️in 2019 it a far better built car from the same manufacturer 10 years ago . I got caught in a flash flood in 2008, the car floated down the road. Checking the interior out after we beached it it was totally dry. In 1969 it would have sank & I know that for a fact.

@@beagle7622 That being what i had meant there, the short of it being that in many ways, vehicles are better than how they were those decades ago. Might've come off differently there, but that is what i had meant to say, though i hadn't mentioned things like how they are built, being far better than of course, in the 1960, 70s & whatnot. Can be easier to get parts, along with not just sinking like a stone as you had mentioned. So yes, while i had not mentioned those particular things, they are also what i had meant. And i were saying what i was, is that many cars nowadays are very similar in design, they don't look all that different with many types. They of course are better quality than many decades ago, just that the styling of them is samey, which makes a good few somewhat dull.
