We present the Tandy m102 Portable Computer. It was released in 1986 as the successor to the very popular Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 100, considered to be one of the first notebook or laptop computers. It is about the size of a book, with an 8x40 LCD screen, keyboard, and host of I/O ports for peripherals and communication, all in a single unit. It uses an Intel 8085-compatible processor and includes Microsoft BASIC for writing and sharing applications beyond the built-in word processor, telecommunications app, address book, and calendar.

Thanks, will check the 0-modem bit. I found that hooking up serial when using battery power can make the machine freeze until you pull the batteries. I don't use the terminal on Mac, but the built in serial tool of the Arduino IDE, or Processing, with the later you can actually program something around the serial communication, like a file transfer tool.
I always thought those things were so cool, but couldn't afford one when they were current.
I was recently thinking of trying to make something similar with a Rasberry Pi and small ultrawide display that's got a similar screensize to the model 100.
Would be nice to start with a non working one of these rather than trying to 3D print a custom case.
Some folks have done that, i.e., used m100 cases with a Raspberry Pi.
this is nice, I just got one of these at the dump and it works great I just need to learn to use it better,
Thanks. Hope we can help you learn 😺
Who would dump such an interesting retro computer?! I'm glad you found it and have given it a new home!
Yeah it’s my new typing buddy, the keyboard is so nice, I just need a way to get stuff off it.
@@bigbadhodad3894 yeah that is the challenge. Hopefully our tutorial on TPDD helps you with that - good luck!
@@CatSynthTV I got a Backpack for it and a dial a rom, such a useful little device now.
going to have to boot up my apple ][ now :D
Nice! Have fun 😺
