Dr. Mark Plotkin (@DocMarkPlotkin) is an ethnobotanist who serves as president of the Amazon Conservation Team, which has partnered with 55 tribes to map and improve management and protection of 80 million acres of ancestral rainforests. Educated at Harvard, Yale, and Tufts, Plotkin has since spent much of the past four decades studying the shamans and healing plants of tropical America from Mexico to Argentina, although much of his work focuses on the rainforests of the northeast Amazon. He is best known to the general public as the author of the book Tales of a Shaman’s Apprentice, one of the most popular books about the rainforest. His new book from Oxford Press is The Amazon: What Everyone Needs to Know.
His upcoming podcast series is titled Plants of the Gods: Hallucinogens: Culture, Conservation, History and Healing, and it will be coming out in late October. More information will be available on Mark’s website (markplotkin.com/).

So amazing that Mark and you met up Tim. I've known Mark since my mid-20's and helped him with his book tour of the Shaman's Apprentice in Amsterdam a while back. He, my brother and a dear friend studied at Yale at the same time. My brother (anthropology) and the friend were from Suriname and Mark knew Suriname through his studies/work. My brother does writing gigs for Mark from time to time on subjects Surinamese. So stoked that through Mark you now know about Suriname and the northeastern part of South America.

Would love to find the 2001 Shaman's Apprentice documentary that shows Mark and the Shamans in action!
I understand the medicinal-plant medicine book is written in the Kwamalasamutu language, but is book available outside of ACT's few Surinamese villages? And how is their Shaman Apprentice program (Amazon Conservation Team) different from other Shaman schools (ex. 40 day training from Oscar Ichazo in Arica, Chile.. or Alberto Villoldo's Four-Winds Shaman course Olume, Chile).
Regarding how Yopol, from the sap of Amazonian Nutmeg, yields a more visual trip, versus an audio trip using the crushed seeds of the Savannah tree.. is it known what the scientific name of the active ingredient is?
Any thoughts on Tibetan Singing Bowls? Anyone catch the names of the plants mentioned at the 40m50s mark?
