Pretty breathtaking how the euphonium blends into the rest of the ensemble at points. The drop aways of the ensemble which showcase the soloist at particularly technical parts are done just right. It'd be great if this piece becomes part of standard literature. It's a fantastic modern approach to the instrument, and to the ensemble that accompanies it in general. Composers are learning how fantastic the euphonium sounds, and epic pieces like this are coming into being. It's long overdue, and a great time to be alive to hear them.
+Anthony Barfield There is nothing to do to change a note in this Anthony The composition is beautiful and the soloist absolutely awesome. A really challenging solo I cannot imagine how many hours of study and practice went into playing this.Until I heard it I said I played Euphonium Not any more . Back to the drawing board. Truly inspiring. Thankyou
@@steveparker9044 tenor clef is actually functionally the same as treble clef just with slightly different accidentals. The top line on tenor clef is a concert Eb same as treble clef which is a F or conert Eb for Bb instruments. You just have to watch want the accidentals are, so if you pretend its treble clef, what looks like an Fb is actually F nat and F nat is F#, Same applies for what looks like a C, concert Bb. It looks like Cb when it actually means concert Bb. So if you pretend its treble clef and transpose the key and watch C's and F's you should be ok, then just learn bass clef for the bass clef parts since its important to be able to read both clefs
@@FreezingGamer1 If you're going to play professionally then this piece should pose no insurmountable problem. it would take lots of practice, but if you're going pro anyways its literally your job
This is university level if your good. I’ve heard more challenging pieces played for rehearsals and juries at a public university. Not sure if I agree for the need of tenor clef for this, at least not so much of it. It makes it look more intimidating than it is. It might keep a lot of players away.
I thought Steven Mead was the best Euphonium player I ever heard. I have changed my mind. I don't think I have ever heard anyone play the Euphonium this high with such beautiful tone and timbre. Great job Demondrae Thurman. You make that Miraphone 5050 sing!
Steven's the greatest all-around player. He's very good in everything, but somebody's better in high or low notes, or who has a better tone in some notes. I still think Steven's the best Euphonist in the world because of his versatility. This is what I think. Maybe you disagree or maybe not. Anyway, Demondrae is an incredible Euphonium (and trombone) player and I really like this performance. Great!
I think we should all refrain from “assessing” and go back to listening to what we admire and expect from music as we here it. “Contests” don’t make musicians, and I think most of the good ones will tell you that.
I heard this at the US Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference this year. It's definitely my new favorite Euphonium piece, and Demondrae Thurman plays the heck out of it (as did Pershing's Own!) I'll never forget that performance and this piece. It's so beautiful, thank you for writing it.
As a Euphist, I definitely appreciate this!!! This will be my 2017 goal. To master this!!! Thank you, Mr. Barfield for composing this Concerto for this wonderful instrument!!
There are many excellent euphonium players from many countries but I don't think I have heard one better than this. Not only was the playing superb but the solo was as challenging i have seen so far .Thankyou so much for sharing your God given talent with us all. The mystery is that this is my first awareness I have had of this amazing talent.
Im an incoming sophmore in highschool and this piece has just made me come back over and over, especially for some reason 5:52 to the end of the first movement. This piece is absolutely MAGNIFICENT, and i recently got down the first page of this solo. I really hope i can play this first movement either by the end of the school year or before the next school year. Anyways sorry for the long comment, but i ADORE this piece Update: Took way too long away from the piece and I’m currently a freshman in college, but I got back on the grind and learned the whole piece. Working on cleaning it up and auditioning for my schools concerto competition with it. That day can’t come any sooner
VERY cool piece! I don't know the last time a piece for euphonium has gotten stuck in my head after a single listen. It's a real shame that my lips would never forgive me if I played this high for this long. :P
Great piece Mr. Barfield, and as always superb playing by Demondrae. I wish I had access to a ensemble that could pull of such an intricate accompaniment but alas I'll continue to play carnival of Venice with my area groups.
i am some years late but my god is this piece breathtaking, i could picture every movement like it was a movie. i love the euphonium greatly and this was a great way to showcase it and the instruments beauty.
I love that this is a live performance and it is done so well from not just Thurman, of course he would do really well, but also the band was solid! Very beautiful music making and I hope there is more to come of this!
Amazing music. Brilliant musician. Sophisticated technique. I've followed it, eyes and ears very attentively, until the very last bar and note. Beautiful piece of euphonium music.
Michael Swarz I agree. I think that all orchestras should contain full time euphonium, bass tubas, and contrabass tubas. It would really make the brass fuller.
This is amazing. As a concerto, it meanders purposefully, recalling Vaughan Williams. There are filmic passages with strong, declarative themes supported by lively, almost restless orchestration. Barfield has a real talent for texture. On a cheesy note, I kept thinking this could be substituted for Williams’ (John) score in Raiders.
what an Amazing piece of music!! I enjoyed the performance about as much as I have enjoyed any piece that I've ever listened to. Outstanding soloist! Do you have any pieces for trombone?
This man is hitting a super F and making it sound like a warm up
Croatian Cowboy the tone man, I’m going to use this area where he does it as a high register practice on trombone
matonizz vibes
@@ealep0314 I don't think matonizz is anywhere close to demondrae, seeing and knowing both in person
But they are both indeed great players, demondrae is just in a league of his own in terms of higher register playing
That's because it is his warm up 👀

Hi there is there a treble clef version of this?

bruh if this were transposed to bass cleff it'd be extremely high
Where can I find the score?
I really hope for this piece to become standard repertoire for the Euphonium
ist to difficult for the most
This is so advanced that I don't think even the best percentile of Euphonium players would be able to play all of this.
Michael Kirby this is a LOT more technically demanding than carnival of venice

Baustin baumet is also pretty damn good
Demondrae is on a different planet to Steve, Steve is one of the most overrated players on the instrument imo
@@ludovicozambonin7663 I would argue that David Childs is the best allround and just best player period so far.
Beautiful!
Time to learn tenor clef!
This haunts me and I've been back to it several times. Inspired.
I want to become even better at playing the euphonium/baritone just so I can play this amazing solo
Also look at the euphonium solo for rule Britannia And on another god he must have the chops of god
dan boss look up bluebells of Scotland. It's an extremely difficult but great song
There is a great recording of it on UA-cam of Joe Alessi.
The key is getting good at a full whole tone, scales, high notes, and being good at fast scales too.
Wyatt Wahlgren yes but joe alessi is a tromboniste ( i play trombone)
That bass clef lick at around 11:40 is one of the greatest things I've ever heard

There are even more great euph player with Childs : David Thornton, Glyn Williams, Gary Curtin, Matthew White, Glenn Van Looy,...
Yes he is very good, but that is not the talent speaking. That is hard work, determination, and perseverance speaking.
George Pether Steven Mead
The second movement of this concerto is beautiful, especially the beginning in my opinion; amazing work Barfield!

Astonishing! This is probably my favorite work for this beautiful instrument as of right now. I'd give anything to play this with a wind symphony. :)
Too bad euphoniums aren't typically played in symphonies. Even though they definitely should be.
Michael Swarz I agree. I think that all orchestras should contain full time euphonium, bass tubas, and contrabass tubas. It would really make the brass fuller.
Michael Swarz Wind symphony is synonymous with wind ensemble.
Mason Wheeler I believe he is referring to symphony orchestras.
Michael Swarz Im more of a kind of guy that will say that euphoniums should be a solo instrument and thats what it was made to be.
This is a beautiful composition. Thanks for your hard work and for posting this.
Deomondrae!! What a wonderful piece and a brilliant performance! Hope to somehow do this with you someday!! To Mr. Barfield, BRILLIANT PIECE!!
Unbelievable, I cannot fathom how he consistently hits the high notes with such ease and precision. What a talent.
Outstanding! He's a tremendous player.
Congratulations to composer and performer. Wonderful stuff bringing euphonium into the mainstream.
The section and licks going into F in the first movement are incredible. Gets me every time.
This is a great piece, I live it. I play Euphonium, and love being able to read the music with it.
soprendente ANTHONY!!!! ... me encanta tu composición. un lenguaje musical muy hermoso y gran cualidad timbrica de la orquesta.

Anthony Barfield It would be awesome if you can make this solo with a piano accompaniment!
Anthony Barfield
I may be miss interpreting it but I really like your use of drum and bass/ electronic sound qualities and rhythm patterns in the third movement
He went to my high school! And he played a piece with us my freshman year for Alabama Music Educators Association!
That was amazing! It was like taking a journey to a distant land.
Beautiful.
There are moments in this that sound very Ewazen-like, especially in the second movement. I enjoyed it a lot. Demondrae is so good.
