Using Drip Irrigation to Water Your Container Plants

- A simple set up with Waterwise, and your containers are set for the summer. Here's how to set up a drip irrigation system, and options on how to use it.

For those of us using the stiffer black tubing, I found that pre-warming the end of the tube by sticking it in hot water for several seconds makes it quite easy to insert the connectors or emitters. You still have to wiggle it back and forth while applying pressure, but it is so much easier on my hands. I put hot tap water in an insulated water bottle; convenient for plantings not close to the house.
Great ideas Lani, thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much!!!!
You have made this drip irrigation system process so easy to understand. Thank you so much for all your knowledge.
Was looking for a simple, straightforward explanation of this stuff. Your video was perfect! Thanks!
I’m so thankful to be able to reference this older but still relevant video. I’m working on getting about 15 pots on drip this weekend and the refresher video, as well as your recent maintenance video, are so helpful!
Thank you for posting this video. Last summer I paid $200 to have a system run in my yard. It was not done right, and my dog I had at the time, tore it all up. It looks pretty easy. Wish me luck.
Excellent job conveying a lot of great information in a short amount of time. Nice work. Thanks.
WiFi enabled? Sold! Lol. Thanks for the straight forward explanation and share.
How fun to see your surroundings years ago.
Thank you! Great to know there’s more flexible tubbing and there’s an efficient way to save water that doesn’t have to be ugly! Freedom here we come!;)
I just started gardening this year and I'm doing this next year! So much easier
Awesome video! Answered many of my questions! Thank you!
I live in Central California, live solo and have very bare, hard, sun baked soil and I really need some color! Thank you for this. You explain everything very well and I am excited to start getting a potted garden together!
Good early early morning to you guys!! Is lil Benjamin awake!? Love how you guys have kept us your videos and content even with a new addition to your family! Continue having fun yall!! We enjoy watching and learning for sure!!
Don't you need a pressure
reducer? How do you pull the lines tight and keep them from pulling out of pots?
Great tutorial, I am going to start my project this weekend...depending if I can find the PW kit. I love their soil...hope I can find a kit! :)
She’s awesome!
Thanks so much for this.
It is extremely helpful.
Great short video!!!
Thank you! Your video is super helpful
Very nice!!
perfect! thank you! can you link to some of the hose outlets you showed?
Looks simple and easy!
My hubby finally decided to put drip irrigation in my patio containers...."If you are going to keep them in a straight line". Well...you know I always have extra pots out there...so...I promised.
I was impatient to do this so I bought a kit at a local hardware store and I wish I would have ordered the kit you recommended because the tubing is so hard that it hurt my fingers. I had to take a break today and will try again tomorrow, I'm hoping the heat from the sun will soften it a bit to make it easier to work with.
Otherwise pretty easy to set up, I look forward to not watering container plants anymore :)
Where are the links she mentioned?
Never mind. Found it.
We have high water pressure, over 80, and it fluctuates. A pressure regulator is not needed at the faucet?
Not that we have experienced.
Yes, you should have a pressure regulator in line for the drip system. Don't use constant pressure emitters, but use PC or pressure compensating emitters. Also, that regulator should drop the pressure down to less than 50 psi. You have to know what the emitter specs are. Also, if you have dirty water (lots of minerals or sand in your faucet filters), be sure and but an in line filter as you don't want the emitters clogged.
@@ProvenWinnersUA-cam You obviously do not live in my house. I spent $70 on two kits and they shoot the caps off and leak horribly at the tap connection even on the lowest trickle of water pressure.
I have 150psi on my outdoor water lines and I haven't had an issue yet (I don't drop the pressure) but I barely crack open the valve on the spigot and I have about 50`of drip line on it
Save yourselves time and get a pressure regulator
Do you have a link to your timer?
Do you have a solution for a water source if you don't have a pipe with water available? Like on a porch. I think it would be interesting to show how something could be set up
No Neal, we do not have ideas on that topic...but thanks for asking.
I love this and want to install it. However, I already have a timer on my faucet for my lawn. I have three hoses going in different directions. How can I add another timer for the drip system??
Best to take a picture of your current system, and visit your local hardware store or garden center for advice.
Do you have the link for the timer?
We offer two timers, dependent on how many areas you want it to cover, they are both listed here, www.provenwinners.com/category/store/watering-systems-0?page=1
Does the hose freeze in the winter? I’m based on Long Island NY.
So what do you do when you want to use a regular hose from the same source? Do you have one of those adaptors to add a separate spigot?
Y adapter
hmmm I have a Pergola with 6 hanging baskets... Im tired of watering at 5.30am before work.. this could be my answer... is it best to water in the morning or the evening
Amazing.
Does this drip irrigation system work for shrubs too?
Yes it would, if you add a timer to the system you can control the amount of time the system runs according to the maturity of your shrubs.
For simple hanging basket, how much water is needed per day, and are you running it 2x per day, to split the total or once per day?
You will need to just watch the amount of water that gets to the hanging basket, and be ready to adjust. No need for two times a day, but that also depends on if the basket is in full sun, is it a moss basket or is it hard plastic, what type of plants, how much wind...there are many variables, so just watch closely and adjust as needed.
if the hose goes through the bottom, will it be clogged by the weight of container?
Hmm thats a good point! I was when watching the video, like awesome idea to run it through the container but your comment made me rethink the idea. I think you will have to test the setup. To be honest, I put mine on concrete so i then need to higher te containers. Not sure I would do that extra work just to hide the tubes
Why she mentioned lifters.
Fyi most new homes have back flow preventing faucets per Gov standards and will have to be removed and replaced with the older type of faucets, or you will have a constant drip with the water continuously on...
What are you talking about
Where can you get more stakes? I can order other supplies from company but not stakes.
We sell the Waterwise items individually, the stakes are on page two of this link, thanks for watching! www.provenwinners.com/catalog/watering-systems
SUPER
Thanks.
No pressure reducer?
We are fairly sure Laura did not use one.
hey Laura! What time of day is best to water plants (mid day? am? pm?) And how long do you start with a 5 gal zucchini container?
It is best to water in the morning and the amount of time is up to many factors, so best for you to watch and judge.
No link to the WiFi hose faucet?
She links it in the comments on her channel: ua-cam.com/video/Z_b3Ktjdz6Q/v-deo.html
They do not work.
Here's an idea, show how you hook up the irrigation tubes to the water supply. If you leave that part out, the video is useless.
Wow you speak so fast i cant follow...not trying to be mean
