I found this video hilarious because whilst searching for a solution, I imagined that the video I finally found would have some bearded guy in the woods telling me how to do it.
Thank you for the help. I think I have all the ingredients in my house so Im set to go.
I respect the fact that you love your boots, are planning to re-heel them rather than get a new pair, and you talk about beeswax lovingly.
In any zombie apocalypse/end of days scenario you will become the matriarch in about 3 minutes.
I salute you and your skills.
I must admit I got quite the chuckle out of your comment 😂 I shall work on continuing to strengthen my zombie apocalypse matriarch skills.
I do my boot treatment in 2 stages.
First I clean dirt off using saddle soap and treat with raw neatsfoot oil. This refreshes the leather and keeps it supple. I leave this about a week to really soak in before the next step.
The second stage is to mix a 40/40/20% mix of paraffin wax/beeswax/clear mineral oil [Johnson's baby oil is great] this is all melted down over a double boiler and applied straight from the hot pot by brush onto to boots pre-heated with a hairdryer and spread out well still using a hair dryer to keep the heat up. Still with heat, I then go to a 6 inch dry bristle paperhangers brush to really even the wax up, and finally, as it cools, buff hard with a cotton pad to remove any excess as bring up a sheen. This gives a really waterproof finish and has served me well for decades. The same mix and method also works extremely well on waxed canvas jackets coats, chaps and the like.
Thank you Marie, I love DIYs, I used to buy commercial leather balm, and never thought it was so simple to make
Thanks, Am! Enjoy :)
Fantastic! I recently purchased an older, VERY well loved bible off ebay that was in dire need of a new cover. I rebound it with some scrap leather I had and was looking to find a good easy conditioner I could make myself. This is perfect! Thanks.
That is awesome!
This works so well! I even use it on cutting boards and wooden bowls (I use olive oil as my liquid oil) 1:1:2
I tried this, but five times the amount plus 7.5ml of patchouli essential oil, for smell. Works great, is nice and firm. Very strong chocolate smell, I haven't decided if it's too much or not. I would recommend the essential oil, it really gives it a luxurious feeling. I don't think this balm darkens leather too much, so that's also great. I love that it's all natural and common ingredients!
Does the patchouli oil smell woody and musky. i can try
Is it gonna create a problem for me If I skip on the cocoa butter? If yes, can you please suggest an alternative that I can use instead of cocoa butter. If no, can you please suggest a suitable ratio of wax to oil that can compensate the absence of the butter. Great video! you cut straight to the point and its amazing.
you can substitute Shea butter for the cocoa butter if wanted.
You can adjust the oil ratio if you don't have access to cocoa butter or shea butter.
In this case, you can increase the proportion of oil in the recipe.
Also coconut oil is a common substitute for cocoa butter or shea butter in homemade balms due to its moisturizing properties and solid consistency at room temperature.
This could be a balanced option for you.
1 part beeswax
3 parts coconut oil or neatsfoot oil
Excellent recipe , also try adding some lanolin and castor oil instead of cocoa butter , or shea butter instead of cocoa , I try different combinations:)
Hey Calgary this is Edmonton. So happy to see a fellow Canadian with an awesome UA-cam channel. Thanks for this. A simple yet effective recipe. Will be subscribing.
Hi Edmonton! Happy leather-balming :)
Can i use shea butter istead of cocoa butter? and avocado oil, Rapeseed oil, then safflower oil?
Can you also use coconut oil?
I researched this very thing at length & came up with the most natural balm that made my boots VERY supple & look like new with a deep rich luster like when they were new (35 yrs ago). Give it a try. My cost of ingredients was $1.07 per ounce. Saphir makes something on the same par & charges $23.00 per 1/3 oz.! Real simple: buy lanolin (sheep wax), jojoba oil, shea butter (unrefined) & orange oil (D-limonene). 1 tablespoon ea. Lanolin, jojoba & shea & 1 tsp oj oil. Melt shea, stir in the rest. Done. I bought a box of 2 oz screw top tins on amazon & they are just right, with maybe a bit more rm to spare. All my dress shoes & leather boots got a thin coat applied with a rag (about 16 pair) set to dry for a day then buffed & polished. They just absolutely popped! None of the ingredients do harm to the stitching like petroleum base products & the oj oil is not only antibacterial but completely counteracts the funky smell of lanolin. My old boots are like butter & my new thick, hard leather white sneakers are now soft. The jojoba oil wont oxidize like olive oil or coconut. Try it you will be very very pleased. You're welcome merry Christmas.
I was looking around to find a DIY to Saphir-- 'cause, ya, the cost-- and voila! I just so happen to have all of these ingredients on hand & will give this a whirl! Ty for sharing!
What about Carnauba wax. How would that affect the ratios?
i'm in love guys !! can u please tell me if we can use it for jackets or only shoes ????
Saflower is not easily rancid ?
non-volatile oil for balm. to smell good. which oil would you recommend?ie permanent oil...lavender,lemon,thyme nice.smelling.oils but not permanent...Carrier oil is seed and kernel oils. They are lighter or odorless than essential oils. Which is the strongest? or it can be from essential oils, like cinnamon, spicy, etc. or lavender, but I think balm would be incompatible.
I dont have cocoa butter. Can I proceed avoiding that ??
Can you use coconut oil instead?
What is the shelf life for this?
Thanks for this. May I know how long can the balm be kept? Do I need to use this within a specific period of time?
Stumbled across your blog for an English assignment loved the recipes so much I subscribed. These DIYs are fantastic.
Thanks! I'm curious, what was the assignment on?
The assignment was analyzing a blog and giving a 5 minute oral presentation about why it was chosen how it varies compared to other blogs of similar sorts. I was scrolling through Google and picked it because I liked the name. Went on with that and found that it was a really fun blog to analyze as there was so much to read. Seriously considering buying your book now. Can't wait to try one of your recipes!
Aww, that's so awesome! I hope you get an A+ ;)
Beeswax:cocoa butter:liquid oil
1:1:2 ratio
heat gently to incorporate
What kind of oil?
I see no reason why this would not also be good for use on dog paws in the winter weather, to protect them from salt and slush while walking city streets and sidewalks. Great video, gonna try this for some small Christmas gifts for friends/family.
You can definitely use it for that! I've also made a more dedicated formulation for that purpose: www.humblebeeandme.com/puppy-paw-paste/. Happy making!
can i use this on a leather horse bridle
Thanks! I am doing mine right now!
Thanks for DIYing with me, and happy making :)
any input on how this would work on saddles and other tack?
Hi, how about to make spray ? Are there any additional ingredients?
love all of ur creatiions, but more to you ..😁!
then, Leather balm 'n pomade re similar, right?
Could I put essential oils in it to make it scented?
I love this stuff! I ususally had to leather up my old booties quite often, but this wax keeps them more happy for much longer! Also yeah.... I will admit... I also like it in my (shortcut) hair. Couldn't resist trying it with that lovely bees-wax scent.... :P
Yay! I'm so glad your boots (and hair!) are loving it! :D
Wow, Super easy in concept. I got to try this. Thanks Miss.
Happy making!
What kind of oil could be used?
hi . i found this video amazing. im starting my leather business and im very eager to make it and i would sell it if it does very good its job on leather. im looking for a Formula for leather edge burnishing to make and sell. can u help me pls ? ;D im serious
Hi, what size is the mason jar please?
120mL
Thnx for the info. .
Curious about the smell. I really dont like the smell of neatsfoot oil and that's what most recipes use.
Marie, I am trying to make a saddle conditioner. I made a saddle soap, but it turns the leather darker and some of the ingredients in the goat milk soap actually can dry out the leather. I also used neatsfoot oil, but that is an animal byproduct made from parts. So maybe your blend is a better solution. So, any thought on how the conditioner would wear on the pants of the rider?
For shoes I have no doubt it will work...but an expensive saddle??
Your thoughts please.
I'm afraid I don't know, sorry!
@@HumblebeeAndMe Thanks Marie...good to see you still developing great recipes. My beekeeping products continue to grow thanks to you
Loved the leather balm! 😊😊😊😊
Thanks, Ethel!
Humblebee & Me Your welcome! 😊😊
I've seen that some people have the leather stuff hot before apling the beeswax. May it be ok if I only use olive oil and beeswax?
You might find this guide helpful: www.humblebeeandme.com/a-quick-guide-to-beeswax-liquid-oil-ratios/ :)
lol i learned 2 things today. I was looking for a leather balm recipe just yesterday and the second is im only 2hrs south of u!! Iv watched all your videos :)
Ah! Lethbridge? It's always fun to find another Albertan online :)
yep actually in coaldale 5mins east of Lethbridge. I own 3 horses and enough saddles and tack to give this recipe an excellent test lol i want to use cocoa butter but its kinda expensive to be using on 800lbs of horse tack lol
Whoa! No kidding, haha... though at least you'd get lovely cocoa whiffs every time you go riding ;)
Funny question,
Is this good for car leather and furniture of leather.
Thanks.
No matter what I'm going to make it anyway once I get home Cuz I'm sure I have leather in the house somewhere that might need it.
I would save this for leathers that don't have a coating on them, and furniture and car leathers usually do. If they don't, it should absorb straight away and work :) Just don't use too much! Happy leather balming ;)
It's good habit to keep things looking beautiful . I thanks to God for making you beautiful Soul.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your answer, I'm an Indian. May I ask your native place ?
@@RKShuklao07 An Indian guy hitting on a woman on the internet? lol
Is there some alternative for the cocoa butter? Thanks!
Hey! You'll find the answers you're looking for in the Humblebee & Me Encyclopedia at www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia. Simply look up cocoa butter to learn about why it's used in formulas, substitutions, usage rates, and more. Happy making!
Hey, is there a way to coffee scent it?
0.3% or so coffee essential oil would do the trick!
@@HumblebeeAndMe I'll do some googling!! Thank you!
I have no idea where to get beeswax, do you know where I could get some or something I could use an alternative? As well I'd like to ask you would this be ok for a English saddle?
Beeswax is one of the most accessible ingredients I work with :) You can order it online (link in the description box), but you can also usually get it at local farmer's markets and health food stores :) It would likely be fine on a saddle, but I would recommend patch testing first just to be safe :) Happy making!
Where can you buy all of those ingredients?
Check the description box!
What is the first ingredient?
You'll find the answer to your question in the description box below the video :) If you're not sure what that means, please read this: www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/whats-the-description-box-on-youtube/

This came up on my to view list today. I just inherited two leather love seats today! Strangely weird
The internet knows! :P
can i swap cocoa butter for shae?
Eh, here... maybe. In general, it's not a super great idea (I've got a video on it) :) Let me know if you try it!
What happens when the vegetable oil goes rancid?
I am quite interested in learning about this because I am looking for a leather conditioner for my sofa, and all the ones in the market contain biodegradable ingredients that will go rancid sooner or later and some people say that will also become a bacteria feast. What is the truth?
This seems like something that should be a problem, but I've honestly not found it to be. I have boots I polished back in 2012 that don't smell at all rancid and have suffered no ill effects, even though you might've expected the oil to oxidize and cause issues. My hypothesis would be that it wears off/out over time, similarly to how it does with our skin.
How to make it have scent?
Hey! You'll find the answer to your question in my FAQ on my website at humblebeeandme.com/faq/ 😊Happy making!
Impressed and subscribed. You are amazing! Is the balm applicable on vegetable tanned leather wallets?
Thank you! And yes, you can-just use it sparingly as too much will attract lint from your pocket :)
what if i use petroleum jell instead of cocobutter?
could you tell me the proportion of adding petroleum jell with 10g of beeswax?
Thank you , Long live the Bees my God what have we done to the Planet and to God's creatures
Thank you so much!
Could this be effective on Wood as well?
Yes, but I so also have a wood polish video on this channel :)
Ever tried fractionated coconut oil in the recipe?
No, but I'm quite confident it would work :)
Humblebee & Me Thanks for the feedback! The company I bought my belt from (Thirteen50 Leather Goods) actually suggests coconut oil for conditioning. But, they don’t specify fractionated or not. But, upon a lot of research...the fractionated variety will do the best against spoilage.
I’m very confident it will work fine. Glad to get another opinion though!
@@HumblebeeAndMewould you use the FCO instead of the Saffron Oil?
I want those boots! 😋
I can't recommend them highly enough! I wear them a good 10 months of the year and once I broke 'em in they have been nothing but good to my feet :) amzn.to/2kXYjU3
Thx for the link 😎
I don't see any difference between this and a DIY beard balm! Damn. My beard and shoes will get the same treatment! 😅
I've tried this formula, but the result is too hard. Then i added castor oil, but the result is too oily. What must ini do Marrie?
Castor oil is very oily, so it's not surprising adding some made the end product oily :) Give this a read: www.humblebeeandme.com/a-guide-to-carrier-oil-substitutions/ :)
do you know how to remove ink and lipstick from natural leather without leaving a water mark?
I'm afraid not, leather really isn't my specialty.
Humblebee & Me I've had this beautiful tan coloured leather coat for many years but can't wear it bc the staining is in front...hope somebody reads this and can advise
How about white leather?
I don't own any and haven't tried it, sorry.
Great recipe! Have you ever thought to make a soap to wash wool/delicate items? I'm a hand knitting-addict and it would very helpful for me! It's not so easy to find all-natural products on the market...and the few available are soooo expensive.
(by the way...I bought your book "Make it up". An amazing work. Thank you Marie
If you want something delicate you'd probably want a gentle detergent, not a soap-true soaps always have high pHs that mean they may not be gentle enough for what you want to wash. Detergents tend to wash away cleaner with less scrubbing, too. You could make your own blend, but I'm not a great person to learn from on the surfactants front-Susan is mucho better! swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.ca/search?q=surfactants. And thank you for buying my book!
Thank you Marie!

Better to clean them thoroughly before applying balm .
yes with saddle soap.
