Really great advice. Thank you. Never thought of Ebay for art but as a past Etsy shop owner, I refuse to join that platform again, I think you could def onto something. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and New Year.
I used to sell in both years ago, I got so disillusioned, I stopped. I think people are leaving Etsy more than before, which is sad. And I've been thinking of going back to ebay because I never stopped painting lol I do hope ebay is improving to what used to be a long, long ago. I might dare to try it again, I'm glad I bumped into your video! Merry Christmas!🎄 PS I actually started youtube to link a video to my ebay auctions! wow, now they do have video options lol cool
I will definitely look into this. I tried Etsy. Literally within 30 mins of opening my Etsy shop I started receiving scam messages. I closed it the same day and decided to just stick with art shows. But I need to start diversifying more.
I know what you mean about Etsy, I’m constantly getting messages from people asking me to donate my artwork to their charities. sometimes they’re legit, sometimes they seem like scams. But either way, I can’t just send artwork for free to everyone all the time. I need to be able to sell it! Haven’t been contacted by any of those on eBay. not to say that there aren’t scammers on eBay, cause there probably are. They’re everywhere. But I think there are less.
@ I hope eBay continues to be a good thing for you. And I love your videos! Artists who are open and share their knowledge to help others are the best! My father in-law is the same way with his jewelry students. It makes learning so much more enjoyable. I have learned a lot and hope I can get to a place where I can share to help others too. Thank you for doing what you do!!
Thank you for the excellent ebay tips video. ❤ Do you think that ebay is also a good way to sell commissioned art? (I was thinking: pet, people or house portraits, etc.) I learned a lot and I think that it may be a great place to start selling, especially if you are an artist who doesn't trust the way Etsy has been shutting down people's shops minutes after they sign-up and pay the fee, or how they have shut-down long-time Etsy Seller's shops who were very successful, and were not selling prpoducts that infringed on other's Copyrights or Trademarks.
I'm not sure about commissioned art, it's an interesting idea. I don't see why not, if you do some experiments and start selling commissions on there, please let me know how it turns out! I'd love to know :)
I haven’t tried selling many originals on eBay, just a couple recently so I don’t know too much personally. But I have seen several other artists selling high dollar originals on eBay. One in particular is a viewer of my channel. He put an original oil painting up for auction and people were bidding on it. so it wasn’t a fixed priced listing.
Shipping costs the same whether you’re selling on Etsy, eBay, or your own website. I just charge extra to cover the shipping. it depends on what size of work you’re mailing, but USPS has fairly affordable rates. Most art prints ship for under five bucks.
EBay has changed from its beginnings -- for the worse. It used to be a place you could buy from individuals who wanted to sell stuff they had around the house. Now it's mostly stores. But Etsy used to be a place for selling crafts. Now IT is mostly stores. What we need is a place that BANS stores and only allows individuals to sell one-off items. I don't see that happening anytime soon. But at least you are having success for now. So it's a good video.
Artist hate AI, but they do the same thing a lot of times and trace/change the image they are getting inspiration from. Well artist usually changes it slightly and AI changes it a lot depending on prompt. Unless artiest painting landscapes they took pictures them selves. I do hate people who steal images from stores though to resale images without changes that people worked hard on if its hand drawn and painted with their own images. Makes me think of temu who does this as I seen artist say there art work popping up on temu.
I use photo references, and I trace my image on the canvas before I paint it. But I always use photo references that I have the right to use. I never use copyrighted images. I pay photographers for the right to use their images that they take of wildlife. And then I greatly change the photo because no animal looks like rainbow colors like I paint them. So when an artist uses a photo reference, it is completely different than AI. AI uses copyrighted artwork all the time. The artist never receives a payment for it. Or even credit at all. Much different.
As an artist myself, I would say those people who are tracing other artist's artwork, are NOT true artist's at all! They are artist-wannabes. They will never learn what they need to learn, in order to create their own art, because tracing is never learning. Tracing doesn't teach anyone how to how to draw (good draftsmanship), nor does it teach anyone the first step before drawing, which is being a good observer. Taking the time to see and understand how things are "built" so-to-speak, and how light hits different objects and affects how we see and interpret their shapes, etc, helps one to more easily draw them. After one learns to draw, paint, etc., from real life, then it's easy to take the leap into drawing anything you can imagine. 😊
But as artists we aren’t selling used items, we are selling artwork. It’s a different category. I can’t tell the difference between the prices on eBay and Etsy for art. There’s more expensive artwork and very cheap artwork on both platforms.
Wtf was that data visualisation graph on the thumbnail?? No data on either axis, the plot going up is represented by two separate (yet showing the same thing) childlike eye-catching colours without meaning anything? This is not a good form of clickbait, please be informative not rage inducing. Interestingly, on different devices I am getting different thumbnails so I hope this is just a visual mistake on my phone. Interesting video in any case, just verging on scummy thumbnail choice.
Thanks for the thumbnail critique, yes, there’s no data on the thumbnail graph. It literally is just a graph. I have two different forms of the thumbnail I am testing. Ultimately I just need to find the one that people will click on best so that the most viewers will be able to watch the video and get the information. Doesn’t really matter to me what’s on the thumbnail as long as people get good information after they click and watch the video. And, the thumbnail does match the video, so it’s not clickbait lol :-)
@KrystleColeArt thanks for the insight into your reasoning, I do still think it's clickbait even with your explanation because there being no data means the graph is just a tool for clicks, not informative, so clickbait. If it had a title "sales" it would imply a change over time (line graph) whereas if you put 2 bars, one short with "etsy" and one tall with question marks, it would imply you're gonna reveal your secrets in the video. Sorry for the unsolicited advice and being unresonably upset by this, I'm just studying data stuff. Happy holidays anyway!
2:02 your eyes are so red, mine started itching just looking at yours :S take better care of yourself, if it gets too late you'll notice it was all for nothing :(
Thanks for your concern, I have red eyes because I have an autoimmune condition called Sjogrens syndrome. It causes me to have chronic dry eyes, among other things. Lots of health issues! Nothing to do with not taking care of myself though ❤️👍
Why would you even say this??? What right do you have to comment about someone’s health? It’s such a back ass concern too. “Take better care of yourself” like they don’t know their own body
Ebay has been changing over the past couple of years. Lots more new stuff not just resale. Great info! Thanks for sharing ❤
Great suggestions, as always. Thank you for so generously sharing what you have worked hard to learn!

Hey i remember watching some of your vids from so long ago, your art is inspiring!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoy my art and you’re back on my channel. 😊

The proliferation of AI on "keep commerce human" Etsy absolutely disgusts me.
Very helpful. Thank you.
You're welcome!
thank you so much, youre so sweet
this is so helpful
You’re welcome! Happy to help!

Have you tried selling originals on Ebay, or does this only work with prints?
I haven’t tried selling many originals on eBay, just a couple recently so I don’t know too much personally. But I have seen several other artists selling high dollar originals on eBay. One in particular is a viewer of my channel. He put an original oil painting up for auction and people were bidding on it. so it wasn’t a fixed priced listing.
Good advice ! AI fad is definitely saturating the market
It really is!
Isn't shipping expensive? I remember shipping small books and it ate up all the profits.

Compare Etsy prices and Ebay prices on used items. Ebay is a race to the bottom.
But as artists we aren’t selling used items, we are selling artwork. It’s a different category. I can’t tell the difference between the prices on eBay and Etsy for art. There’s more expensive artwork and very cheap artwork on both platforms.
