Great video! Akai S3000XL and S1100 owner here. Still use them today. Filter resonance in S3000XL is super sweet. For anyone going OTB, your setup NEEDS at least one Akai!
Thanks Mike. This was a really useful video. I'm working with a 3000xl, so a slightly different feature set but I learned loads from this that i didn't get from the manual. Amazing that this 30 year old kit still holds it's own against more recent equipment.
How great to have stumbled upon the products manager of the S3000 classic, a sampler which is being shipped to me as I write this! I had an S1000 at the turn of the millennium and an S6000 about five years ago. Somehow the S3K series has eluded me all this time. It will join my E-mu e64 and Yamaha A3000 and I can't wait to feed it some classic breakbeats for that Akai knock! Thank you for your massive contribution to the music I love.
@@mcmike100 I am sure they will complement each other nicely :-) About the S3000, I have heard it said that the sound is very similar to the MPC3000, would you agree? Am very interested in the difference in converters, algorithms etc between Akai samplers. Particularly the S3000 versus MPC3000 but also the S3K XL, S2K and MPC 1000. Is it true that the S2K is sonically the same as an S3K XL? Many thanks for your time.
@@ozzy3ml It's been a long time, but I believe the sampling sound engine is the same between the S3000 and MPC3000. I was gone before the S3K XL and MPC 1000 so I can't really answer that.
s1000 tutorial would be excellent. Still LOT of producers use this samplers due to great sound... Mayby it's time to show newbies, that here is not peace of crap, but monster perfect to produce hiphop, house and techno.
I don't think we did an S1000 video, although it would have been a good idea. I'm not aware of an S2000 video either. I am going to post the last two videos I found. One is a DR4 video, done around the same time as the S3000 video. The other is for the MPX820 mixer, where I speak extemporaneously for a half hour under hot, hot lights. And, I have posted three commercials I did for a music store, called "Slashing, Smashing and Whipping".
Great samplers - even sampling at full bandwidth gives the sound more character. Hardware samplers were going for peanuts 10 years ago... I paid £50 for S3000XLs and £20 for an S2800 (which sounds a bit nicer as it uses the S3000 (NON XL version) sound engine. Those days are no more as people have started to appreciate hardware sampler quality. The newer breed of hardware sampler such as the Volca and Digitakt whilst are very powerful focus more on pattern based music where the older samplers focus on polyphonic layers and loops. Even more annoyingly, the Digitakt doesn't have a proper song mode so as a sequencer it has limitations for performers who wish to play guitar or synth while the song sequence plays back. Fortunately the Akai MPC sequencers offer this.
I have sampled toryant varying MPs sampler modulation through 16:32bit nantendo 63.05 now I have 16x4x32 synthesiser subatomic middle, band and middle, braider to ultrasound up to down light out to sound ultrasonic cloud computing and anatomical accelerant and all media multi level multi interflex coordinator and ultimate command line with full automatic systems modulations if require autorun modulation pattern I have dual core dual bi anchored and bi polarization X modes on a quad level annalog or with or nexto through or back module digitally polephonic duplexing functions THE SINGULARITY.
Nice i use a s3200 non xl , great sampler but high pitch noise on record inputs though for some reason so i record into my xl save to scsi then load to 3200. Could never work out why there was noise ? great upload love these outboard bits of gear.
atommachine I have an S3200 as well, but I haven't experienced the noise problem. But I probably haven't recorded anything into it for 20 years. I think most of the time I recorded through the digital inputs.
Thanks a lot for posting this Mike!!! , You know... there have been a lot of discussions regarding the S3000 and the S3000Xl converters and overall sound; do you know if they shared the same AD/DA block?; could you say the S3000 is a MPC3000 without the sequencer? Thanks again for your time and experience!!!
On this video the liquid Krystle dissplay is a:mazing if you know you, you know not what it is and may not be but is and definitely isn't for the simple minded.
mcmike100 Oh shit, you're the guy in the video. I'm sorry, man. I read the bboytechreport article you linked to, and you seem like an interesting guy. Shouldn't be judging books by early nineties covers :) I apologize. It was still a super helpful video.
mcmike100 Of course it was :) People are assholes so don't worry. It's obvious that 90's had their own hairstyles, clothing and there was a technological boom and curiosity unseen on that level nowadays. Your tutorial have helped me a lot with my S3000. I like these samplers but it's quite uncomfortable to work with them, especially if you have more than 1. I have S1000, S2000 and S3000 and love all of them for different things :) Regards and thanks again !
So I see the guy in the video comments on here and maybe be able to help me out. I am looking to use a sampler for live but all I want to do is use it for stuff like intros and in between songs, that sort of thing. Not for hands on. It will just be in a rack and triggerd with a midi foot switch. Would the s3000xl be a good piece for that or do I need a different sampler? And how would the sample get loaded into the sampler? I want to use samples I prerecorded in my daw.
The S3000XL could work, but I think you'd need some sort of MIDI keyboard since the samples are mapped to MIDI notes. I'm not sure if a MIDI foot switch would advance to the next note. The S3200 could play audio files direct from disk and could be set up to trigger various ways. You could get one of these small cheap keyboards and just map the audio to notes. If you have a digital out (SPDIF) from your DAW, you could transfer audio into the S3000XL. Otherwise, use the analog inputs.
@@mcmike100 I think I'm going with a Akai MPX16. I really wanted a rackmount unit but this seems to be very user friendly and modern and at the price point I'm looking to spend at $199 brand new can't really go wrong. And with the sd card feature I can just throw the files right on it no problem from my computer. And I can trigger the pads with midi no problem or at least it seems that way from all the research Ive done.

Mike the true legend of the 90s. In fact, timeless legend. Cheers for the video. Getting stuck into a 3000xl now, love it.

Thank you so much for uploading these videos you helped produce back 30 years ago. Invaluable help for us still using these awesome machines.

try switching off i.e. pushing in the display button, this works on my s3000xl.
Dub Siren Yeah, it could be noise from the inverter of the backlight that generates a high voltage high frequency signal.
Basics are covered in the owners manual. Unfortunately, can't be found anywhere...
You could find it 25 years ago when I made the video. It's hard now though.

My midi foot controller is a voodoo lab ground control pro and it does send 0-129 midi notes per each midi id device that it controls.
