Catbird Mew Calls - Extreme Close Up

  • Gray Catbird's version of a cat mewing. It is unusual for the Catbirds to come out in the open and feed on seeds, but after spending the winter here in Florida these birds are acting a little frisky and starting to head north for the breeding season. Interestingly they don't sing their colorful songs down here in winter just their cat mew call. They can sing as good as their cousin's the Mockingbirds but they save that for breeding season up north. In a few more weeks they will mostly be gone from here until next Fall.

The "mewing" sounds a lot like a cat, but maybe only 30% of the time (and that's being generous). They have a very diverse repertoire of sound and love to show off during the spring and summer.
Catbirds have wonderful personality. I'm always amazed at the rivalry between Catbirds and N. Cardinals.

Catbirds love sliced grapes and also will eat jelly.
Since I feed them grapes and jelly it is easy to tell when they
arrive from the south and depart again every year.
I was surprised to discover they migrated south last year
on Sept 16, but this year they were still here until Oct 6.
I am going to continue to keep track of when they fly south ever year
to try and see how much variation there is.

And for some reason, catbirds seem to have an intense and personal rivalry with all cardinals everywhere, seriously watch some of these videos, the hate is real. You could have two giant piles of bird food in a room, put a catbird and a cardinal in that room and they would rather fight over one pile of food instead of having one pile each for themselves!

A Catbird crashed extremely hard into my dining room window.
I ran out with a clean cloth rag and tweezers, wrapped the poor guy snug in the cloth to cradle his body and head. After about an hour while I carried him in one arm and using the tweezers to pickup some bugs for him to eat he gently opened his eyes while I hummed a lullaby. He appeared to be alright with what seemed like a smile on his face all cozy in the cloth. As I gently stroked his head he smiled and closed his eyes. Another hour passes by he started to wake up very calm and appeared happy. I fed him some bugs and by this time my husband was calling me Cat! Cat! Cat!
Not to startle the bird I rested him on a stone ledge and checked to see what my husband wanted, after I came back out to check on the bird thinking he flew away by now but he laid there all peacefully with a smile. As I peered down at him he opened his eyes. So I started talking to him gently then continuing the lullaby. I realized he was fine enjoying the restful sleep so I placed him back down so he can stay resting and leave anytime after.
Came back out to check up on the Catbird but he was gone.
Since then every Spring he comes to my window pears into the house calls Cat! Cat! Cat!
to let me know he is back and time to put out the bird feeder.
I wish I could post photos of him. 🙂❤️

Similar thing happened to me. A catbird slammed into my living room window. The poor thing was in and out of consciousness over the next few hours. When he looked stable, we gave him some water and berries in case he was hungry. He was very uncoordinated, and let him stay the night. The next morning he was ready to be set free! He was meowing and meowing non stop. At first, he was reluctant to leave but eventually sprung into flight.

The catbird doesn't have the beak to crack seeds, so he allows the cardinal access to the seeds for a while, then chases it away so he can scarf up the seed scraps left behind. Catbirds, like mockingbirds, are fearless, and very bossy.

A few summers ago my daughter & I were hanging around outside and we kept hearing what sounded like a bird that sounded kinda like a kitten. Sometimes it sounded exactly like a kitten, sometimes it sounded like a bird making a kitten sound. This bird/kitten went on ALL day. We finally went in for the night & my bf walks in at midnight & says he thinks there's a kitten in the bushes. Knowing that birds aren't too vocal at night I realized that I had literally been hearing a gray catbird vocally competing with a kitten all day. Poor baby kitten. She was only around 6 weeks old & you'll never guess what color she is....
We named her Bird, for obvious reasons, so it still ended up being a gray catbird we were hearing all day. Lol
(Sidenote: The 1st time I saw a gray catbird it was watching me mow the lawn. I use a reel lawnmower, so it's kind of a nice sound that isn't loud enough to scare them away.)

Hi! I'm in north central FL, near Gainesville. We have tons of catbirds here! I am just getting into birdwatching. I'm actually a legally blind 54F, blind my whole life. I have some binoculars and monoculars I use, and I've put out 5 feeders in the past week, so I can watch! Lots of cardinals, squirrels, catbirds, chickadees, crows, and wrens. May I please ask what those tiny little pink and blue bits are mixed in with your food? I spent some $$$ on this 'bugs-n-berries' mix of food. I have to make do on a very limited disability income, so my money is tight! The birds don't seem to care at all about the little meal worms and mix with that food I bought! I am excited that the catbird is here, they are so cute and very fast! They seem to enjoy my platform feeders that are hanging, the best. Thank you, neighbor! (Where abouts in FL are you?)

I only use two type of seeds now a millet mix amzn.to/43M75cp and either whole black oil sunflower or better yet just the hearts of the sunflower. I have never had any birds interested in the fruity mixes etc. BTW catbirds love scrambled eggs in the winter at least, not sure in breeding season. Good Luck! BB
