Catbird Mew Calls - Extreme Close Up
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- Gray Catbird's version of a cat mewing. It is unusual for the Catbirds to come out in the open and feed on seeds, but after spending the winter here in Florida these birds are acting a little frisky and starting to head north for the breeding season. Interestingly they don't sing their colorful songs down here in winter just their cat mew call. They can sing as good as their cousin's the Mockingbirds but they save that for breeding season up north. In a few more weeks they will mostly be gone from here until next Fall.

I just moved to the east coast and when I first heard these birds this summer, i was stupidly searching for a kitten in the bushes
It's not stupid! It's sweet. I've lived in the south with them all of my life and still found myself getting tricked a few weeks ago.
😂😂 us too!! Our Catbird loves the bird bath. He has a blast splashing around "meowing". I noticed he now has a mate, and they trade bath times.😂😂
literally just thought i heard a kitten outside in my bushes too. i live on the east coast- good to know there’s no kitty. i thought i was going crazy
We did the same when we moved to the country
I did the same thing ! 😅
The "mewing" sounds a lot like a cat, but maybe only 30% of the time (and that's being generous). They have a very diverse repertoire of sound and love to show off during the spring and summer.
Catbirds have wonderful personality. I'm always amazed at the rivalry between Catbirds and N. Cardinals.
It sounds like my extremely old (23yo) cat crying to wake me up in the morning haha what a beautiful bird
is the cat still kicking?
They are such mimics as you can see at the 1:02 mark when it flawlessly mimicked a cardinal!
I didn't expect any edits so 2:46 SENT me!!! Thanks for the laughs❤
Welcome!! Yes Catbirds can disappear. BB
Lol nice cardinal cameo 🤣 And I like when the catbird starts talking back to the blue jays hahaha
Catbirds love sliced grapes and also will eat jelly.
Since I feed them grapes and jelly it is easy to tell when they
arrive from the south and depart again every year.
I was surprised to discover they migrated south last year
on Sept 16, but this year they were still here until Oct 6.
I am going to continue to keep track of when they fly south ever year
to try and see how much variation there is.

I think this might be the bird I'm hearing every morning at 7am..

11 am for me
I just moved to a townhouse backing the woods and I have a ton of these birds…. And I love them!!!!
I'm always amused by the variety of sounds catbirds make :) the ones where I live sound more whiny usually.
My cat appreciated this immensely.
Mine too lol
Very interesting closeups. I will confirm they can be defensive about a rich food source. I had one scolding me furiously one day in Virginia when I was picking blueberries.
And for some reason, catbirds seem to have an intense and personal rivalry with all cardinals everywhere, seriously watch some of these videos, the hate is real. You could have two giant piles of bird food in a room, put a catbird and a cardinal in that room and they would rather fight over one pile of food instead of having one pile each for themselves!
Same in PA, but it was after me about wild red raspberries bordering my yard. Lol
Omg so cute haha, Also, i didn't know these things were the twitchiest of twitchy birds either, crazy man, the speed at which they go from eating to standing upright and... meowing, is like 120 mph haha
naa. finches or these small things move like 1200fps.
@@ShawnJonesHellion yeah that’s more like it 😆. I’m not sure why I used miles per hour lol
Earting to standing fast means he is watching out for himself never know what might be after you.
A Catbird crashed extremely hard into my dining room window.
I ran out with a clean cloth rag and tweezers, wrapped the poor guy snug in the cloth to cradle his body and head. After about an hour while I carried him in one arm and using the tweezers to pickup some bugs for him to eat he gently opened his eyes while I hummed a lullaby. He appeared to be alright with what seemed like a smile on his face all cozy in the cloth. As I gently stroked his head he smiled and closed his eyes. Another hour passes by he started to wake up very calm and appeared happy. I fed him some bugs and by this time my husband was calling me Cat! Cat! Cat!
Not to startle the bird I rested him on a stone ledge and checked to see what my husband wanted, after I came back out to check on the bird thinking he flew away by now but he laid there all peacefully with a smile. As I peered down at him he opened his eyes. So I started talking to him gently then continuing the lullaby. I realized he was fine enjoying the restful sleep so I placed him back down so he can stay resting and leave anytime after.
Came back out to check up on the Catbird but he was gone.
Since then every Spring he comes to my window pears into the house calls Cat! Cat! Cat!
to let me know he is back and time to put out the bird feeder.
I wish I could post photos of him. 🙂❤️
What a great story! Birds have an amazing ability to recover if they are in a safe place. Good job. BB
That’s so sweet.
Aww sweet. Thanks for helping him.
@@terrilynn27allen88 Always my pleasure to help out our wildlife
Similar thing happened to me. A catbird slammed into my living room window. The poor thing was in and out of consciousness over the next few hours. When he looked stable, we gave him some water and berries in case he was hungry. He was very uncoordinated, and let him stay the night. The next morning he was ready to be set free! He was meowing and meowing non stop. At first, he was reluctant to leave but eventually sprung into flight.
They are very friendly birds
I have an abundance of catbirds at my oriole jelly feeder! This morning one was chewing me out while I cleaned and refreshed the container. 😄
I had first orioles today and these birds came to the feeder I had set up for them diving into the grape jelly and oranges ..I had not seen them before and had to come on here looking for a bird that sounded like a cat crying ..wow ..what a day at my feeder this has been 👍🐦
We have a mocking bird or a crow that makes the sound of a crying newborn. I looked everywhere for a baby , to see the blackbird fly off after a half hour. 😂
Bird at bird feeder sounds like a cat. I look it up in my bird book. Finds out it's name is Cat Bird. "Makes sense..."
I'd seen this bird in my yard over 26 years ago, eating java plums. I heard its mew call as it hops and fly around, & I Said & wandered " what's that......!! But now I'm sure of it" when I saw the cat bird Video. I'd enjoyed it, Thanks such a nice video.
Catbirds sound a lot like a cat, but in Seguin, Tx. at a friends house we kept hearing a definite "Meow" of a cat. We finally found it was a Mocking Bird making the meow sounds.
So many gorgeous birds around singing so beautifully.....gorgeous video. Thanks so much for sharing this treasure
I love male cardinals such beauties those birds
lol i literally called two cat birds in with this video playing loud on my patio. it was as if two of them were competing for the attention fo the bird in the video.
I like them. They will call back and forth too. its cute-;)
I agree, my catbird will land on a nearby branch and stare at me. Maybe because I meow back signaling I left some fruit out for him. Mine is cute but sometimes is shy, saw he had a baby with a lady catbird.
The catbird doesn't have the beak to crack seeds, so he allows the cardinal access to the seeds for a while, then chases it away so he can scarf up the seed scraps left behind. Catbirds, like mockingbirds, are fearless, and very bossy.
Looks like they shat blood, and that makes them cuter
A few summers ago my daughter & I were hanging around outside and we kept hearing what sounded like a bird that sounded kinda like a kitten. Sometimes it sounded exactly like a kitten, sometimes it sounded like a bird making a kitten sound. This bird/kitten went on ALL day. We finally went in for the night & my bf walks in at midnight & says he thinks there's a kitten in the bushes. Knowing that birds aren't too vocal at night I realized that I had literally been hearing a gray catbird vocally competing with a kitten all day. Poor baby kitten. She was only around 6 weeks old & you'll never guess what color she is....
We named her Bird, for obvious reasons, so it still ended up being a gray catbird we were hearing all day. Lol
(Sidenote: The 1st time I saw a gray catbird it was watching me mow the lawn. I use a reel lawnmower, so it's kind of a nice sound that isn't loud enough to scare them away.)
I live in upstate NY and hear this sucker (it's middle of may rn) every morning starting shortly before 5 am. I used to think it was a cat or a kitten stuck somewhere lol. Sometimes they even yell loud and very clearly "Jerry Jerry" or at least it clearly sounds exactly like Jerry. Lol
My favorite bird. All over my back yard. They even say my name.
Wonderful shots! Your restaurant is going well ... Thanks BB!
I have too many catbirds to count every spring.
It seems like every year I have more.
They especially love raisins and grape jelly and a bird bath.
I have 2 birdbaths in the back yard and 1 in the front.
Lowes is the best place to buy birdbaths.
Home Depot doesn't even sell them any more where I live.

So that is whose nesting in the Chickasaw plum tree, and eating the delicious plum, to boot! His creation is magnificent!
I have the most charming catbird this spring. He waits for me every day for a treat and is very confident, unafraid to approach. So beautifully colored darker Grey with black Cap and tail.
3 catbirds just arrived to my feeder this past week, yours looks to be a bully bird. mine aren't as territorial. Thanks for the cool upload!!
Mr.Catbird and his nifty crewcut-every morning he eats his raisans
i always thought these guys were squirrels, their warning bark sounds a lot like a catbird's mew lol
I heard this bird today and wondered what kind it was. Thanks for sharing this!
Great video capture! I just did a watercolor of a Catbird and this helped me out a lot, thanks!
Raising Arizona brought me here lol, sitting in the fabled Catbird seat!
Lol. Most people I've talked to seem to find them super annoying, but I just think they're hilarious. They sound so stupid. 🤣
Enjoy the colorful and characters of the yards
A little screech owl visited me last night what a soothing sight and sound he was
To me they sound like a crow got ahold of a squeak toy 🤣
🤣It sounds more like an obnoxious blue jay💙
arent all bluejays obnoxious
@@vorpalweapon4814 No...They're so intelligent. Love them!
I've heard a few of these guys here. Also love how the Catbird is chasing the Cardinal!
Fancy meeting you here, fellow JoJo fan.
Oh well hello there, fellow jojo!
I have one of these nesting in my rose bush outside of my kitchen window. 2 little eggs I can’t wait for babies!
Sounds like a sick cat!
me: "did i just find a new kitty? 🤗
youtube/google :" no its birds"
😢
I just looked this up because I thought it was a cat in the tree! 😂
Lmao the cardinal is hilarious
This beautiful bird has become my favorite, I live in rural Arkansas and have had a pair take up in a small thicket behind my house . I shoot my longbow and they are usually watching me practice as long as I don't stare at them they tend to hide if they catch me watching them to closely.
They are fun birds to have around. BB
I like to imagine it's just screaming FOOD
Angry little birds I had one following me at work it would set in the bushes and screech at me and come out and watch me too. We'd have staring battles it was awkward...
the birds dominate my suet block but are cool to watch..and they will perch only a few feet away from me when im outside on my deck for morning coffee...not scared..i live in southern CT
I love the sounds they make! Thanks for the close ups and the info.!!!
I think catbirds carolina wrens do crack together
We have 1 in our tree in our backyard and when I play this he/she goes crazy, flying back and forth looking for the "other bird"🤣
There this mf always making noise in the morning in my back yard 😂
Cardinals are beautiful yet such bullys lol
So beautiful this makes me happy i love it thank u so very much friend.take care
I love our catbirds! My one cat watched this video intently just and stalked up to the laptop screen. Note to self: I need to remember to disable the touchscreen when she's watching so she doesn't stop videos with her nose and paw. Second note to self: The cat's a righty. I posted a clip to Instagram and gave you credit for the video playing in the clip.
One of these has a baby in my yard. I saved the baby from my window well and see it in the yard once in awhile. The mom yells at me every time I go outside though haha. Its funny but I'm ready for the baby to be able to fly so they can move on
From a bit afar, and in real life, some may say it sounds like a baby crying
THAT'S MY SON
They love cranberry sauce!!! (Ocean Spray lol)
We have one that comes to our deck every day and waits for us to feed it. Trying to get him to eat from our hands now

Just trying to use this to get a catbird to find its way back out of the warehouse where I work. All the lights are out, I don’t have any mealworms handy, and I don’t think there’s such a thing as a worm call…
They love raisins!
Thank you for the video! It has helpful in identifying the bird that has recently taken a liking to me!
Was turkey hunting today and this morning heard that bird. Was literally looking for a house cat but instead the sound was coming from a tree.
so cute
I hear this bird everytime it is warm and around 5am in the morning. I go WTF.
The cardinal crashed the party :)
LOL poor cardinal
I didn’t know they called them cat birds because of the sound they make, I thought it was because every time you see one it’s attacking a house cat among MANY other things...
Wow that’s what I hear by the Ohio river. I never see cats there, but I hear what sounds like a kitten crying.
Thank yiu
HAHAHA THAT BIRD AT THE END
That's a rare cat
Crazy how those two bird are Jittery, there mouvement are not smooth like a owl for example
Hi! I'm in north central FL, near Gainesville. We have tons of catbirds here! I am just getting into birdwatching. I'm actually a legally blind 54F, blind my whole life. I have some binoculars and monoculars I use, and I've put out 5 feeders in the past week, so I can watch! Lots of cardinals, squirrels, catbirds, chickadees, crows, and wrens. May I please ask what those tiny little pink and blue bits are mixed in with your food? I spent some $$$ on this 'bugs-n-berries' mix of food. I have to make do on a very limited disability income, so my money is tight! The birds don't seem to care at all about the little meal worms and mix with that food I bought! I am excited that the catbird is here, they are so cute and very fast! They seem to enjoy my platform feeders that are hanging, the best. Thank you, neighbor! (Where abouts in FL are you?)
Thanks for sharing your story. Those were added vitamins and minerals designed for pet birds but the wild birds love them. I only use two type of seeds now a millet mix amzn.to/43M75cp and either whole black oil sunflower or better yet just the hearts of the sunflower. I have never had any birds interested in the fruity mixes etc. BTW catbirds love scrambled eggs in the winter at least, not sure in breeding season. Good Luck! BB
Love your video set up!! How fun!
Great shots. Not very musical call though so wonder what it sounds like when it is looking for a mate. Thanks for sharing.
They sound like children imitating birds lol.
I have one outside my bedroom window every morning, chattering away. When go out and it sees me it comes close and meows at me until I meow back. We talk for a while before I go on my way. I wish I knew if he liked the conversation or he is just annoyed and trying to get me to just go already.
I love this! 😃
Just saw one here in NY!
It kinda does sound like a cat/squirrel
I have some Catbirds in my neighborhood this year.
There's a pair of nesting catbirds in my backyard. I tell people they meow at me and they think I'm insane
When I first saw this I thought it was a mockingbird.
One shows up every summer here in Mass. Easy to see how they get their name.
Thank you BB! I love your nice videowork and i love birds!♥
Sounds like a robot cat
You k ow it's a cat bird because it constantly shows you its butt
Everyone knows the true catbird is the owl 😁🦉

Mr. Wheezy sounds really raspy lately. I bet he's just eager to get back up in Minnesota.
These birds will eat grape jelly like crazy
