- This video is about the life of Alexander Pope and his relationship to Jacobitism (the supporters of James II and his son, James Francis Edward Stuart). In the reign of Queen Anne (1701-1714), Jacobitism was far from a romantic failure. It was a solidly mainstream position. The great poet Alexander Pope was a member of the recusant (Catholic) community, which stood to gain if the Jacobite heir came to the throne. As a reactionary, however, Pope prized order and harmony, so there was a limit to how much chaos he was prepared to countenance.

Ed Dutton sent me. And this was a brilliant episode.
The Jolly Heretic is a fine watering-hole!
Thanks for this. I have been waiting and hoping and was not disappointed.
skadi warrior Good to hear!
Nice video! I love the part about The Rape of the Lock, hahaha.
_Thoughtful_ introduction into the *history of Jacobitism* , evolving from a _political movement_ in favour of _legitimate succession_ to a _subculture_ , expressing *dissent* with _'liberal democracy'_ .
...and if these matters were solely meant to supplement _archives_ , they wouldn't flicker up on screen...

"Onwards and upwards!"
That brings immediatly 'Geekin' with James Hancock' to my mind, since he ends on that phrase in every nerdy video...
Don't worry, there will be plenty of _crushing setbacks_ to 'purify the gold' - so we don't randomly step into the only kingdom that ultimately matters like usurpers...
Once you read Pope's translation of the Iliad, you will never enjoy those ridiculous 20th century ones they tortured us with in college.
SebastianX1/9 Reading Pope’s Homer brings another dimension to the experience as well.
