I saw a video of James Hall and Mark Lewis, and James did very little squatting movements while on the ski erg. I am wondering if that will help the legs to stay fresh. Do you have any experience with that more hip-focused movement?
Yes you don't want to over squat the hips should stay above the knees. it is somewhat dependant on your build, James is tall with a lot of weight and strength in the upper body, if you are shorter and lighter you may need more leg drive to gain momentum. I've got a video where I go a bit deeper on technique ua-cam.com/video/vsw7yIPmImc/v-deo.html
