- In 1924, Ernest Bloch wrote three pieces that form a suite called “From Jewish Life,” intended to be performed together and in this order: Prayer, Supplication, and Jewish Song. Hoffman likes performing these three pieces in the opposite order to what Bloch intended; he begins with Jewish Song, then Supplication, and then the highly potent Prayer. Enjoy Gary Hoffman and pianist David Selig performing Bloch’s “From Jewish Life”

Of all the interpretations I’ve ever heard-and there have been many-Hoffman’s touches me the most. He somehow plumbs the depth of Jewish feeling in a way I’ve never heard before. I’m haunted by the beauty of this performance, and so grateful for the relief it brings during these troubled times. Thank you.
What a moving and beautiful performance. Thank you!
So beautiful and haunting. It’s a beautiful performance and inspiring!
Beautiful, tasteful interpretation! And the tone of the cello is just magnificent.
