Oh my gosh, Jungle Hunt! I play this game SO MUCH in the arcades! One day, at a different arcade, I discovered Jungle King and beat it thrice; I was extremely curious about why there were two different versions of the game so I am so glad I came here. Jungle King and Jungle Hunt is still around in various places. Jungle King is a for sure collector.
Happened upon this via a link over at ArcadePunks. This was a great story from a game I'd nearly forgotten about. I've never seen the Pirate Pete "reskin", it looks pretty slick even if the game play is identical (funny that Taito so blatantly ripped itself off in this case.) I'll definitely not only be making my way through your back catalog of videos here but also anxiously awaiting the next installment.
Thanks for the kind words, jungle hunt was always one of my favorite arcade games. I thought the back story with the Tarzan estate would be something good and interesting to talk about. However, it's one of my least watched videos I've done. Apparently it wasn't as big of a hit as I thought it was? Thanks for subscribing and glad you enjoyed my video. I'm still a really small channel so if you could spread the word I would appreciate it. Thanks again.
Really enjoying this on Taito Legends Xbox. As well as Zoo Keeper! I grew up in the 90s and never played these until recently. They are amazing and keep me coming back for more.
I love your videos, Patman! I enjoy them so much that I decided to start from your oldest and work my way forward-- and something tells me it won't be the last time I journey through them, either! My favorite thing about your videos, though I love the history and context you give of course, are the little details someone my age, born in 1989, never would have known-- like Kurt Russell as Jungle Boy, or Jack Black as Pitfall fan boy in the commercial! Thank you so much for sharing your perspective on all these awesome games. I am researching old games for a long term emulator database project, basically filtering out what games are shoddy conversions and which are unique and worth keeping per console, and your opinions and thorough reviewing process are invaluable! I am a Patman Superfan!
AND I remember a glitch that happened during the 1st to 2nd phase transition - jumped off the vine too early, the falling sound started playing but I passed the border so the phase ditty changed to the jump into the river tune!
Pitfall on the Atari 2600 has a Tarzan yell when you swing on vines across the crocs, quicksand, and whatnot. It's made up of musical tones but easily recognized. I love that game.
Lets face it, no matter what name if they character is a loin cloth or even shorts we'll think "Tarzan" and if dressed more, especially with a hat, it's "Indy" to us. Thanks for giving Tarzan details. I either forgot or didnt realize he was one of the early franchise characters. Maybe the 1st? Jungle adventures were everywhere when I was a kid, new shows, reruns, movies, comics, toys (Big Jim, Mego Tarzan, etc).
Another outstanding video game history! Thanks again Pat! Keep up the great work! The electronica band Church of the 9 Candles (C9C) did an homage to the Jungle King franchise a few years back on their Robot's Night Orgy CD. The tune is called "Jungle King Suite." Google it! It's very NerdCore...
My screen name is from a character in an Edgar Rice Burroughs book, the Barsoom series. As a huge ERB fan, I can tell you that all of the books he published while living are today copyright free in most of the world including the US. But this was not the case in 1981. Copyright used to be life plus 50 years. Since Burroughs died in 1950, it was not yet 50 years after his death. The ERB family zealously guards whatever they can get out of his estate. I don't know if they were compensated well for John Carter of Mars (which i think came out in 2012), but they go after fan fiction and fan art. Though, to be honest, there is so much of it that it's impossible to put the genie back in the bottle. There have only been 3 officially licensed ERB-like works published. 2 for the Pelucidar series and one a collection of "pastiche" stories based on ERB characters and words. Burroughs published a lot of books. Like 15 of Tarzan. 10 for the Barsoom (Mars) series. 4 (1 posthumously) of the Amtor (venus) series, 3 for the Moon series. 3 or 4 mainstream books. 2 or 3 Westerns. The Monster Men. I think 2 for The Jungle Girl. 2 or 3 of The Mucker. 7 or 8 Pellucidar series. 2 for the Poloda series. Probably a few more I am forgetting. Nearly all of this was published both in book form and in magazine form, what were then called "the pulps" (named for the cheap paper they were printed on). While Tarzan was by far the most popular, it wasn't even close to his best work. His writing style is flawed, but he's a great story teller.
Jungle King was the first variation I played, and I think I’ve seen about 3 Jungle King cabinets, and 2 Jungle Hunts. Taito seems to have stepped away from even Jungle Hunt in recent years in favor of Pirate Pete, though. Jungle Hunt got released on PS2, PC and Xbox on Taito Legends, but Arcade Archives and the Egret II Mini got Pirate Pete instead. It’s worth noting that Pirate Pete is more difficult than Jungle Hunt and Jungle King, starting at roughly the same difficulty as the second loop of the Jungle originals.
Great videos. How about doing some on the Shadow of The Beast series? I love the Amiga games & PS4 reboot of the original. The music & graphics blew me away, as a kid.
It was initially released as Jungle King, but changed as a result of copyright disputes. Published the same year as Moon Patrol, Jungle Hunt is one of the first video games to use parallax scrolling.
Loved this game. I remember the local arcade (the gold mine) had jungle king. The 2nd loop thru gorillas would appear on the vines and try to knock you off. I liked JK better because of the yell at the start. Every level the jungle king's hair color would change: black, yellow, red, purple
Had the original Atari cartridge, could never figure when to jump or duck when confronting the big boulders. Also, were there intentions to include a stage involving Gorillas? They appeared on the conceptual art for the Atari 2600 release but never in the game.
Wait, so you are saying that all these decades me saying Taito as tay-toe is an incorrect pronunciation? I think I prefer how I have been saying it better.
It's described on MAME as a "prototype" ... so maybe they playtested it in a few arcades, saw that it was a bomb and went back to the drawing board Nice that we get to play it though - as well as Jungle King with its Tarzan yell at the start
Seriously though who down votes these videos. Highly informative, high quality....and its retro.
Thank you for the nice words. I wish I knew :-(

Thank you, glad to help with info on the game
Awesome, you are killing it with these - great work.
thanks so much for the feedback and the kind words
I never considered to watch your older Documentarys... but now it's next on my list. Wish i knew earlier about your Channel.
Thanks a lot, hope you enjoy them
Patrick I absolutely enjoy your videos, thank you for the time and effort you put into these! Catching up on some older ones now.
Glad you like them! Thank you so much

I noticed the parallax scrolling myself. And the colors are so bright.
Excellent, that's the mark of a classic game if it keeps you coming back for more :-)

I knew NOTHING of Pirate Pete. But I DID play Jungle King after discovering Jungle Hunt.
I love this game, it was a lot of fun

Wow I remember playing both Jungle King AND Jungle Hunt! This was one of my old faves.
I played them both as well I especially love the actual Tarzan yell in the game
I have it for the Atari 600XL computer. It definitely looks and plays better than a lot of games of that era.
That one is a really good conversion too
Omg i completely forgot about this classic dude you are the best.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
Pretty cool! sharing this on my facebook page :)
Awesome, I will take a look at your page too. Hope you like the videos
@The Furthest Man From Home Absolutely :-)
Great memories with this game!
Thank you for the fun videos.
Glad you enjoyed it!Thank you
Jungle Boy also had the "Tarzan Yell" ... I played this game in a store as well as MAME

Thanks, I'll check it out
There's a home-brew Intellivision version of this now by Collectorvision.
Another game I totally forgot about. Man is this old.
It sure is, but still fun to play
I remember this one but could never get into it as much as pit fall
For quick pickup and play arcade game this was always my favorite
I played this game out!
I fricken LOVE the music for the last level in the Atari 2600 version!!! This was the version i remember the most from my childhood!
So did I, it was really good

Very interesting, thanks for the info
This one was brilliant on the 2600. It made excellent use of the tiny memory available. =)
It sure did, it was fantastic for the system

I never noticed the music was Tarzan Boy by baltimora
This game and Bump and jump where the 2 machine i have played the most , i play on jungle hunt and jungle king
i used to play this all the time as a kid!!!
You and me both my friend
I have the AtGames blast with the atari version. My 4 year old loves it!
Jungle King was the version I played in the 80's. I remember when the board was swapped out to Jungle Hunt after the lawsuit.
So do II
Didn't know about Pirate Pete - more importantly - didn't know you could duck on the boulder level!!!! :)
I didn't know about pirate Pete either until I ran across it.
Subscribed. Great video!
That's great, hope you like all my videos
I'll check them out when I get back home, and I'm sure they'll be great.
Please let me know what you think
Ha ha...Pirate Pete! Did not know about that!
I wasn't aware of it either until I researched this video. Thanks for watching
Some Jungle King machines still exist, as I'd once observed during a trip to Muncie.
Very cool
Yeah. Doc's got one at the ghost in Brookfield
These videos are awesome. Can you do a history of either Roc-N-Rope or Congo Bongo or Tuttekhamen
tHANKS,I've got all of them on my list so we'll see what happens at some point
I was always more of a Pitfall Harry fan, and not just because he GOT AWAY with doing a Tarzan yell.
LOL
One of my favourite games as a kid top 3 list Remake this in California games
Excellent
Thank you very much
Great videos. How about doing some on the Shadow of The Beast series? I love the Amiga games & PS4 reboot of the original. The music & graphics blew me away, as a kid.
Thank you, all depends on if I get enough request for an apartment find something interesting to talk about
Great documentary, great game!
Glad you enjoyed it!

That is everything I go over in my video
Thanks Thomas 🙂

It may have already been said, but you might include the moneys on the vines in later levels. Otherwise, great video!!!
Thanks
JUNGLE HUNT Didn't Get Released on the NES
I never said it did
i actually played "Jungle Boy" in the field
Very cool

Not that I know of, but it is possible
I had no idea this game existed. It seems around this time film studios were wizening up to intellectual copyright theft in video games.
Oh absolutely, not just with movies but videogames were getting clones as well especially on the home computer market at the time
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Yep. Sega's Congo Bongo I think it was called was one notable clone.
am i high or did he just say he thinks of his nephew's bucket list when he thinks of dudes in loincloths?
The protagonist of Jungle king came them SERIOUS sore throat because he screamed like a madman uncle a camomile?
Noishh!!!!!!
Thanks
In a senshe I know what you're trying to say.
Wait, so you are saying that all these decades me saying Taito as tay-toe is an incorrect pronunciation? I think I prefer how I have been saying it better.
Sorry to say but you've been saying it wrong all these years :-)
i've played Jungle Boy...i thought it was a clone
It's described on MAME as a "prototype" ... so maybe they playtested it in a few arcades, saw that it was a bomb and went back to the drawing board
Nice that we get to play it though - as well as Jungle King with its Tarzan yell at the start
@@jazzx251 - My MAME lists it as "Prototype"
