In my opinion as a Master Mariner and Marine Pilot this accident
could have been avoided if Master of ship and Pilots onboard
allowed ship to maintain the speed of about 8kt's instead of slowing
vessel down when power was restored x2 onboard ship. Ship would
of passed under bridge at 8kt's. There was only light wind early in the
morning so windage would not have affected the ship to a large
degree. The slowing down of the ship caused the bow(front) of ship
to veer to starboard(right hand side) thus causing the ship to collide
with bridge foundation support. There was not enough distance
from ship when it lost power to the bridge to safely stop the ship
before the bridge. Best option in this scenario forget about dropping
anchor and trying to slow down using engine. Rather focus on trying
to maintain ship in navigation channel when power was restored x2
and with the speed of about 8kt's it would quickly pass under bridge.
Once passed under bridge then drop both anchors to slow down ship
and use astern engine movements to reduce speed when power
back on. The natural thing to do is to reduce speed as fast as
possible to prevent or soften any collision or grounding which might happen
however in this case it appeared to be the wrong decision.

    • @terebrate
      @terebrate 2 місяці тому +1

I'd like to see a bird's eye view "replay" of the ship's position, its "track" in the prior minutes, and forward direction (and proximity to the bridge) at the time the power went out. That would be very useful in determining if what you're saying would have worked, which from my reading seems well considered.

    • @brianbarbarich1401
      @brianbarbarich1401 2 місяці тому +7

@terebrate check out utube "What is going on with Shipping" has track of ship from when it left berth to when it collided with bridge. It is from Marine Traffic. Very good and he shows video at same time of ship approaching bridge and collision.

I'm not a ships master or pilot but I did serve in the U.S. Navy for 4 years and I haven't been able to get out of my mind these exact same thoughts. Of the two videos that are prominently being displayed one is sped up about 4x and is senseless but the normal speed video shows this to be exactly the case. If she had not executed emergency maneuvers she may have slid through. It might have been close. That big swing to starboard actually looked like something a ship would do that had power and rudder control. The anchor drop was obviously useless and may have sealed its fate as well as emergency reverse which some are claiming initiates bow swing. She wasn't going to stop anyways so try to maintain steerage when you have it and some directional control. I know there are a lot of armchair admirals lately but this just doesn't look right. And they haven't interviewed the pilots until today? They must have a good union.

A bridge that is a fracture critical design that doesn’t have significant pile protection will catastrophically fail by removing just one of the piles holding up the bridge.
There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for NOT having massive pile protection in place after similar circumstances of hitting and removing just one pile destroyed the Florida Sunshine Bridge.
I remember that well studding the failure in my College engineering classes.

    "Transverse Thrust”.
The phenomenon where a propeller's rotation generates a sideways force in addition to the forward or backward thrust. In many ships, including super tankers, this effect causes the stern to move towards the port (left) when going astern, and the bow to move towards the starboard (right), creating an engineering moment that must be anticipated in the vessel's handling.

A ship of that size at 8 knots has a huge momentum with the rudder amidships at that distance off the bridge ,assuming it was already dead centre of the channel should have carried on fairly straight under the bridge, true any wind or current would cause uncontrolled leeway but the ship should have made it past the bridge at least. Something more serious was definitely at play.Hopefully will find out one day. RIP to the victims.

The bridge stanchions were quite small. Should have been beefed up over the years due to larger water vessels traveling thru the baltimore bridge.
All pilot and tug boats should escort all large vessels out to sea and past any bridges or obstructions on US soil .
This will avoid a bridge strike and the same applies to incoming vessels.
Large Vessels on water should not be allowed entry or exit into protected waters during inclement weather deemed unsafe wo an escort.

A few questions you did not ask Sal, or anyone is asking either it seems.
Were there or are there any Telecommunications or Fibre Optic Data Cables, or Power Cables?
Or Gas Pipes, and Water Pipes, plus Sewage Pipes, or other utilities running under Baltimore Port and Harbour or under the Main Shipping Channel?
Or actually utility cables and pipes were running, along or through this interstate Eastern Baltimore Toll Bridge too?
So could this Container Ship either dropping and dragging its own anchors along the bottom of the Port and Harbour plus the Main Shipping Channel too.
Or when the Container Ship hit or collided with and knock down, this East Baltimore Toll Bridge, could Utility Cables and Pipes been damaged, Yes or No or does anyone even know so far too.
As ships or vessels dropping and dragging their anchors, have caused underwater Telecommunications and Data Fibre Optic Cables, or underwater pipelines damaged in the past!
So could there be unknown damage, to underwater Utility Cables and Pipes, in the Baltimore Port and Harbour area, plus running across the Main Shipping Channel too?
Because if there is damage to underwater Utility Cables and Pipes, this could be an unforseen and very expensive cost someone may have to face and pay for too?
As many road bridges and/or rail bridges, even passenger bridges, are used to carry Utility Cables and Pipes, across whatever the bridge is helping to cross!

There seem to be talk on social media, about this Container Ship, having circle breaker issues?
Directly because of the number of "Reefer - Boxes" onboard, keep tripping the vessels electric circuit breakers.
That is all the time, plus this has been going on for some time too, maybe since before the Container Ship arrived in the Port of Baltimore too!
Or it is to do with the high number of Refrigeration Shipping (10ft, 20ft, 30ft and 40ft long) Containers, that have been loaded onboard this Container Ship too, more than this vessel's electrical system can or could handle maybe safely?
So has been tripping the vessel's onboard electrical Circuit Breakers, all the time and for at least 48 hours before. The Container Ship left the Container Terminal dockside, in the Port of Baltimore too?
Also not only was the Container Ship Captain and Chief Engineer, plus all the crew onboard aware of this, so was the Ship's Owners and Shipping Operators too!
As well as the Port of Baltimore Authorities Officials, also the Container Terminal Management too.
Were equally aware of this information too, with some asking and the suggesting now too. This Container Ship, should not have been allowed, or given official permission to sail.
Until this Circuit Breakers issue, had been fully addressed and resolved plus corrected and repairs had been officially sign off on too. The Container Ship was safe to go to sea, that is under her own power too?
Which makes you wonder if anyone told the NTSB investigators about this, or has these NTSB investigators found this out for themselves too.
Or the NTSB officials, will now be looking into this Electric Circuit Breakers issues onboard this Container Ship too?
Because if there is a Circuit Breaker issue on this Container Ship, also proper repairs have not been carried out too?
Then there should still be a Circuit Breaker Issue, onboard this Container Ship now happening as well?
If the "Reefer's" onboard were causing the Electric Circuit Breakers to trip, then someone trip to share the loading across different Ship's electrical supply Circuits.

All they could have done is expose other onboard electrical supply circuit breakers, to equally start tripping too.
There by causing a ship wide electrical blackout, as seem to have happened on this Container ship.
Before the Container Ship colliding with this bridge piers and support columns, or caused the collision to happen!
As a direct result of a ship wide blackout, from these tripped Circuit Breakers connected to "Reefer's" onboard.
So causing total loss of power to ship's propeller, also the Ship's rudder plus the Ship's bow side thrusters too!

or you build protection for critical infrastructure like other harbor do. This morning i read there are +17.000 outdated bridges in the US with no protection against collision like these.
In my opinion the port authority and Baltimore take a big risk not to secure the bridge for crashes like this. It's the only way into the harbor where 15.000 people work. In the back you have round about 150.000 people which depend on the port.
For protection you can us tugboats as escort like in the Panama Cancel. But it will be cheaper for bridges in the long run if they are protected with barriers like dolphins, fenders or little pillar islands.

On April 12, 2007 the AHTS Bourbon Dolphin capsized due to tension and weight of the anchor arrangement of the semi submersible drilling rig Transocean Rather. Mistakes were of course made during this incident and the Bourbon Dolphin was considered "marginal" for the job at hand, despite being designed for the harsh conditions on the North sea and having a bollard pull of 180 tons. However, just imagine what a container vessel with a dead weight of around 117000 tons moving at 8 knots would have done to that significantly larger AHTS compared to a harbor tug. Towing is not a easy operation and thinking your problems are solved by such a operation is simply a false feeling of safety. It would be better to mitigate for the reason why the Dali had a black out. This is technically very well possible as can be seen on dynamic positioning vessels that have a very large redundancy.

There were two Baltimore pilots on board guiding the ship out, as is the standard practice at every port where local guides are there to guide these ships out of port. So it would be the Baltimore pilots who would give the command to drop anchor, which they did. But as one marine expert had said, the anchors do not stop the ship immediately, because their purpose is to 'anchor ' the ship when they have stopped to the dock/jetty/pier. As to speed, all the marine experts I've heard, were unanimous in saying the speed was normal, and not too fast, including the guest in the video, which some lay people have wrongly claimed.

@@N7-WAR-HOUNDfor starters, dropping a side anchor risks changing the direction of the cargo ship. This would not be something done in a "narrow" channel. It was done only as an EMERGENCY MESSURE by the 100.000 -ton ship (and cargo) when within 1-kilometre of a collision and no other options existed.

When CVN-65 ENTERPRISE was transiting SF Bay many moons ago, a navigational error compounded by a stiff breeze put her onto a mudflat. The pilot in that case had decided to turn back the control of the carrier to the skipper. The Navy and SF pilots were in a contract dispute. We should be grateful that the pilot did not make the situation worse. A rare occurrence but it happened.

Knowing how Maryland DOT works, I wouldn't be surprised if they made the new bridge a "Toll Bridge". Or the FEDS, "Sorry we can't pay for the new bridge. We spent all our money on Ukraine".

Ken, that is a good point. How much have we wasted in Ukraine?

What does transportation funding have to do with Ukraine? Tolls are re-applied towards maintenance and future infrastructure upgrades. Guess you were trying to make a point that just totally flopped. Weird.

Yep, just go on and live your totally clueless life. “Not my problem” you say as you pass through a burning town. “Not my problem” you say as people beg you for help… while you mutter “I’ll just wait for the officials to show up”.
